happily stunned. i was happily stunned by the amazing toffee cheesecake, which i might add is a perfect companion to the heavenly kashmir chai latte. nice ambiance, friendly staff, and admirable selection of foods and drinks.
i commend caloriesrestaurantto you unreservedly!

i haven't been here for a few years, so i thought i would stop in to pick up some cheesecake from their display area. i waited 5 mins for someone to take my takeout order, while the staff was busy clearing a table (most of therestaurantwas empty). after one of the staff finally realized that i wanted to place an order (and not just mindlessly stand there looking directly at the them for no apparent reason), my order was finally placed. another customer behind me also placed her order with a different staff member. but to my luck, her order was completed first because the staff member who took her order completed it himself. finally after a few minutes i got my order. the cheesecake was delicious but they seriously need to get their service figured out. mostly emptyrestaurant+ 4 staff members working in the front area and they still don't realize that someone is here for a pickup order. very disappointing.

not a good time. i went to thisrestaurantfor my sisters birthday dinner and it was awful, it took them 30 mins to make my drink, the food was cold, bad presentation, the food just did not taste good.

however, the desert was very good! will go back for deserts but defiantly not main meals.

slow service, sour salad, sour visit.... i have been to calories a number of times and i have eaten some very nice food there. indeed, it is one of a very few restaurants in saskatoon that i have been happy to recommend. unfortunately, one of the problems of having high expectations is a substantial sense of let-down when things are not so good. this was the case today, when two of us visited calories for lunch. we were seated immediately, but our order was not taken for about 25 minutes. and the food did not come until we had been in therestaurantfor about 45 minutes. this is much too slow for a lunch time service in a down-town environment. i ordered what was described on the menu as mexican corn salad with barley, black beans and arugula, with a cup of pumpkin soup as an accompaniment. i usually like corn and bean salads, but this one was not to my liking - an obdurate mass primarily consisting of barley, which was definitely over-seasoned; much too acidic and too salty; i ate enough to satisfy my hunger and abandoned the rest. the pumpkin soup was by contrast bland in the extreme, and was a most un-appetizing off-gray color. i could not stomach my soup at all, so i decided that there was no point in my eating it. my arugula had some decaying leaves mixed in, and moreover the bread served with my lunch was rock hard on one side and tasted quite stale. my salad came with sweet potato chips which were very nice, but alas there were only two of these. overall, just like my salad, this visit to calories was distinctly on the sour side, and i regret that i feel unable to recommend them anymore.

'real food' shines at calories. i've been wanting to write a review for calories for a long time and i'm finally doing it!

we live a few hours out of town and only get into the city once or twice a month. and i very much look forward to dining at calories any chance we get! from perfect quiches, to hearty delicious from-scratch soups, to to-die-for desserts (my favourite is turtle squares!) and many more things, there has been nothing that i haven't enjoyed for the attention to detail in flavours, textures and presentation. even the kids plate with just one 'house-made' cookie or treat, is actually full of healthy-but-fun finger food that my kids think is so cool! i find myself going home inspired to research and try master something new... and even attempt to teach my kids what i've learned about classic french cooking!

but maybe what makes this place special to me is that i know just how committed they are to using the best local foods they can find. i know it costs more to buy food is raised 'small scale organic' ,'pasture-based' or 'wild caught' ...vs... the 'bigger-faster-fatter-cheaper' food that the sysco truck brings. it means many more accounts to manage, farms to visit, relationships to keep, not to mention the diverse kitchen skills needed to deal with whole animal butchery which is often the way local farmers need to sell meat.

and i guess i'll just say it...i am one of those "pasture-based" farmers. we've worked with quite a few local-food restaurants and things aren't always what they seem...lets just say...if the price seems to good to be true, it might be!

but remi and his team are the real deal...they take great pride in working with the best food they can get and doing all the preparation of it themselves, and have for almost 20 years, long before local food was "in". i hope it doesn't go unnoticed that their sauces and condiments take flavour to a whole new level not ever seen in the bulk commercial versions we are used to. from the time i've spent in the back ofrestaurantkitchens, i've seen how physically demanding, frantic-paced the work is, but when you add in the degree of "from-scratch" cooking that is always brewing in calories...well, my hat go off to you all as true artisans in your field!

thank you for every delicious real meal i've ever ate from your kitchen, calories...it was worth every bite!

ps they are the only chefs and staff that buy food for 'personal use' from us! i think that says a lot...

i used to look forward to calories' unique and creative menu options but am becoming increasingly disappointed with the vegetarian options available. having been a progressiverestaurantwith these options available - i am curious as to why arestaurantof this caliber is being suddenly being surpassed by mediocre and chain restaurants in this field?! when it comes to the newest calories menu i am shocked that the once creative team cannot do any better than offering potatoes and cheese or gnocchi (more potatoes) as their vegetarian options... i am sure it is not that difficult to find a way to work in a vegetable or complete protein.

craving a sweet.... disappointing to be welcomed only by the phrase, "do you have a reservation?". this might be typical of a bistro with limited seating at supper time but to forgo the "hi, how are you?" or a similarly friendly greeting prior to the question is a bit of a turn-off when a huge piece of the dining-out pie is attributed to customer service. whatever time it is, however big the party, however little the order is, to treat each diner with respect and kindness should be a given in the service industry, especially given the locale. i like to think of saskatoon as a small town that stays true to it's sweet-prairie-people image. i don't like when arestauranton broadway, which plays host to out-of-town visitors and boasts saskatoon pride, becomes somewhat pretentious. each time i've been to calories, i have felt like i was but a bother to the servers making my visits there few and far between, staying only long enough to finish my creme brulee. to be fair, i haven't been for lunch or dinner service so i will likely give it a try and post again after sampling that. for now, i am on the fence as to where to put my vote; i love the dessert, but do i like eating it all the while feeling like i can't have a post-sweet coffee and instead must promptly leave.

great dessert options. i've been here for dessert a few times and have enjoyed the cheesecake options in particular.
it's not my favorite place to go however - the atmosphere leaves a bit to be desired. therestaurantis small, which isn't a big deal but i don't like sitting in a 'squished' environment, where you can hear every word of the conversation the table next to you is having.
i've never had an issue with the staff but reading some of the reviews here make me a little uncomfortable - seems like the place is getting a little pretentious.
all in all, i enjoy calories for an occasional indulgence but it's not a place that i typically frequent.

more reasons why calories is great. this is an update to a previous review. twice in the last month i have gone to calories for desert and or refreshments. you can't go wrong. where else can you go to enjoy dessert and beer - yes beer, and dessert, together! ale and apple pie goes well together. anyway, the main reason for this update is to clear up a misconception about hamburgers, and to defend a fine chef (remi) who knows a helluva lot more about food safety than the average individual. hamburger needs to be cooked to 160 deg. f for around 15 seconds to kill harmful forms of bacteria (if it is even present). the temperature guideline is the only accurate guideline. the number of people who consistently turn back hamburgers that show a bit of pink on the inside dumbfounds me. the colour does not indicate doneness. temperature does. also to consider is the source of your meat and who grinds it. if it is sourced by therestaurantand ground fresh, there is much less chance of harmful bacteria being present. cooking until everything is dark brown is for grocery store ground meats that you don't know much about, and cannot afford to take chances. it is not a proper guideline for restaurants. i am hoping that i can get a chance to come and try one of these burgers that i have seen people turn back out of misguided fear. it's kind of a shame, but i know that in the industry you kind of have to cater to the intelligence of the masses and i know that this will affect how calories serves these up.

still one of the best. dinner entrees are very good here, certainly in the top 5 for saskatoon. i had a beef rib dish that was deliciously rich, girlfriend had a gnocci dish that was equally excellent. desserts are probably the best in the city, but expensive. there was only one time where i did not enjoy something served by the chef. this was on a sunday, for brunch, and the hashbrowns that came with my eggs benedict were way over-cooked, to the point that they were all crust. hurt my mouth, but i forgave, and came back, and enjoyed, and i will be back again and again!

good dessert, not bad food.. dessert is a must have at this cozy littlerestauranton broadway avenue. my personal favorite is the shmoo cake with extra sauce.

food was mediocre, with small portions and a expensive price. my favorite dish was the mussels with pomme frites.

service was decent, with a hint of attitude.

i give caloriesrestauranta overall 7/10.

diner. we have been to calories a few times over the years and the one thing that has not changed is the high prices and fairly average food, but today i actually chose to comment because the service was beyond unacceptable. i have no desire to enter anyrestaurantthat acts as if they are doing me a favour by allowing me to enter their doors. when i part with my hard earned dollars the least i expect is my water refilled and a few manners. perhaps someone emptying the overfilled and smelly waste paper basket in the washroom too. sorry, if it wasn't my top pick for dining before today, it will never be a pick again. rudeness is never acceptable within the service industry, and most especially when you have patiently waited to be seated for over 20 minutes.

lunch was pleasing to the senses. i've been holding back from writing a review until now because it was roughly 2 years since i last had a meal there and just never had time to go back. finally had the opportunity to drop by for lunch, and everything was as wonderful as i had remembered.

the food:
i had the bbq pork on wild rice bread with a side of their 'pommes frites' (aka french fries). of course, their fries were delicious and were at the perfect temperature to not scald my tongue upon the first bite. they were crisp, lightly seasoned, and did not have a heavy-starchy texture in your mouth. the aoli sauce was a nice subtle alternative to ketchup, but i found the taste to be so subtle that it was neither here nor there.
the bbq pork uncannily resembled the chinese bbq pork that i'd eat at home, with the exception of the tangy sauce. combined with the coleslaw and wild rice bread, the sandwich was a tour de force. the flavors and textures are more than the sum of its parts.
i do have a grip however, and that is regarding the little bit of pasta salad partially hidden underneath the fries. it just tasted okay. the texture was good, but the flavors simply didn't feel "there", if you know what i mean.
/
overall:
the atmosphere was comfortable and the room was filled with sunlight. the waitress was very polite, and i left feeling full after enjoying my meal (unfortunately, too full to leave room for their famous desserts). i suggest that if you have groups greater than 2, then make a reservation, because therestaurantwas filling to capacity once the clock struck twelve.

always in my top three. calories is one of my favourite restaurants. it is the place to have duck confit! the best! sunday brunch never disappoints, and the dinner menu is always being changed. i do check the menu online to ensure everyone in my dining party will have something available to them. calories is one of the few restaurants that has a vegetarian option on every dinner menu. they have some unique wines not otherwise available in saskatoon, and their desserts are very good. one caveat - i rarely go when it's busy. i find the service at anyrestaurantto be more attentive if the waitstaff is not flying from table to table.
