we just came here for dessert. i had the lemon torte, which was moist and delicious. it did get a little too sweet for me near the end of the slice though. we also tried the chocolate hazelnut cheesecake, which was very very chocolatey and rich, but the texture was beautiful. the raspberry white chocolate cheesecake was my favorite dessert out of the 3 we ordered. it was so so good. yes, the prices are on the high side, but that's to be expected. i will bebackto try their food menu!

the food here is always good.  i like the atmosphere because it's laidbackwhile also providing good service.  i appreciate the servers are attentive without being overly so.  that's tough to balance yet all the servers here seem to manage it.  the food always tastes fresh and is served quickly.  the menu changes relatively frequently so even though i go here regularly i usually end up with something new every time.

this is a great place for late night coffee and dessert.

came here for a late night coffee & dessert. it was very tasty. i would really like to comebackand try the supper menu. i was here a few years ago and had lunch and wasn't overly happy with my meal. but i would like to try something else because everything looked tasty on the menu.

not a good time. i went to this restaurant for my sisters birthday dinner and it was awful, it took them 30 mins to make my drink, the food was cold, bad presentation, the food just did not taste good.

however, the desert was very good! will gobackfor deserts but defiantly not main meals.

'real food' shines at calories. i've been wanting to write a review for calories for a long time and i'm finally doing it!

we live a few hours out of town and only get into the city once or twice a month. and i very much look forward to dining at calories any chance we get! from perfect quiches, to hearty delicious from-scratch soups, to to-die-for desserts (my favourite is turtle squares!) and many more things, there has been nothing that i haven't enjoyed for the attention to detail in flavours, textures and presentation. even the kids plate with just one 'house-made' cookie or treat, is actually full of healthy-but-fun finger food that my kids think is so cool! i find myself going home inspired to research and try master something new... and even attempt to teach my kids what i've learned about classic french cooking!

but maybe what makes this place special to me is that i know just how committed they are to using the best local foods they can find. i know it costs more to buy food is raised 'small scale organic' ,'pasture-based' or 'wild caught' ...vs... the 'bigger-faster-fatter-cheaper' food that the sysco truck brings. it means many more accounts to manage, farms to visit, relationships to keep, not to mention the diverse kitchen skills needed to deal with whole animal butchery which is often the way local farmers need to sell meat.

and i guess i'll just say it...i am one of those "pasture-based" farmers. we've worked with quite a few local-food restaurants and things aren't always what they seem...lets just say...if the price seems to good to be true, it might be!

but remi and his team are the real deal...they take great pride in working with the best food they can get and doing all the preparation of it themselves, and have for almost 20 years, long before local food was "in". i hope it doesn't go unnoticed that their sauces and condiments take flavour to a whole new level not ever seen in the bulk commercial versions we are used to. from the time i've spent in thebackof restaurant kitchens, i've seen how physically demanding, frantic-paced the work is, but when you add in the degree of "from-scratch" cooking that is always brewing in calories...well, my hat go off to you all as true artisans in your field!

thank you for every delicious real meal i've ever ate from your kitchen, calories...it was worth every bite!

ps they are the only chefs and staff that buy food for 'personal use' from us! i think that says a lot...

patience is not my virtue. i love the food and desserts here! even the coffees and drinks rock! however, the service is always slow. even if we go for just dessert and coffee, it takes at least 15 to 20 minutes to arrive. we are talking about slicing a cake and frothing some milk. i keep goingbackfor the love of the food. but they really need to do something about picking up the phone for reservations etc. i can never reach them during store hours.

great leap in service these days. we've loved calories for brunch and late night light suppers for years, but i've had reoccurring problems with having my order match my meal. i love the bagel and eggs, but asking for the eggs to be cooked well done has been an exercise in futility. usually the wait staff just takes itbackand returns with it late enough that i am behind my companions. if you've ever had a service problem at calories, you should give it another try: today, after encountering this problem again, the manager's response made the mistake worth it. my meal was comped, and extras were thrown in. and the bagel was still tasty when i did get it. thanks for going for a classic take on customer service. it was appreciated!

great evening. my husband and i braved the cold to celebrate my birthday at calories last night. we haven't been here for quite awhile and will remedy that in the coming months.

the food was very good, from the crunchy baguette at the beginning to the soups and salads and our main. i had a polenta and eggplant 'lasagna' layered with olives while my husband had a ribeye steak. he found the meat a little fattier than he likes, but agreed that the taste was excellent. the bistro menu rapidly changes but you should be able to easily find something that you'd like to have.

calories has an expansive wine list and we enjoyed two large pours of a cab/shiraz blend.

our server was perfect; friendly without being overly friendly. being told by my husband that it was my birthday, we were surprised to find our wine was comp'ed at the end of the evening and to get a little bag of french candies to take home. i don't think they do this for everyone but it was just the perfect end to a great evening. calories, you have won our business and we will bebackoften.

recently went to calories for brunch. the maple syrup fried eggs were sublime and i could easily come again and again for them. i did not find them overly sweet unlike what another reviewer said. the 'french toast done in a bread pudding style' was odd - it's just bread pudding, why call it french toast? but the food is always tasty and calories is an institution in the city. there are a lot of cheaper alternatives in saskatoon but you get what you pay for.

more reasons why calories is great. this is an update to a previous review. twice in the last month i have gone to calories for desert and or refreshments. you can't go wrong. where else can you go to enjoy dessert and beer - yes beer, and dessert, together! ale and apple pie goes well together. anyway, the main reason for this update is to clear up a misconception about hamburgers, and to defend a fine chef (remi) who knows a helluva lot more about food safety than the average individual. hamburger needs to be cooked to 160 deg. f for around 15 seconds to kill harmful forms of bacteria (if it is even present). the temperature guideline is the only accurate guideline. the number of people who consistently turnbackhamburgers that show a bit of pink on the inside dumbfounds me. the colour does not indicate doneness. temperature does. also to consider is the source of your meat and who grinds it. if it is sourced by the restaurant and ground fresh, there is much less chance of harmful bacteria being present. cooking until everything is dark brown is for grocery store ground meats that you don't know much about, and cannot afford to take chances. it is not a proper guideline for restaurants. i am hoping that i can get a chance to come and try one of these burgers that i have seen people turnbackout of misguided fear. it's kind of a shame, but i know that in the industry you kind of have to cater to the intelligence of the masses and i know that this will affect how calories serves these up.

still one of the best. dinner entrees are very good here, certainly in the top 5 for saskatoon. i had a beef rib dish that was deliciously rich, girlfriend had a gnocci dish that was equally excellent. desserts are probably the best in the city, but expensive. there was only one time where i did not enjoy something served by the chef. this was on a sunday, for brunch, and the hashbrowns that came with my eggs benedict were way over-cooked, to the point that they were all crust. hurt my mouth, but i forgave, and came back, and enjoyed, and i will bebackagain and again!

time has passed. i agreed to try calories as urbanspoon rated calories as vegan friendly. when i arrived i was told they used to always have a vegan item on the menu, but i really should have called first, but i could enjoy a salad and veg broth. great. wlhen the bread arrived i asked for olive oil, but was informed the bread wasn't vegan. when it came time for dessert our server started off by looking at me and saying, "we have no vegan desserts." my husband left the table just before our main course arrived and one of the staff people took it away to keep it warm. unfortunately, when he returned no one brought itbackto him for what seemed like a long time. terrible service, overpriced food, and not vegan friendly.

nice leisurely lunch. if you don't have to getbackto the office this is a great place to have a nice long lunch, if by chance you do...this may not be the place to go. i made a reservation for 12 and arrived right on time, food was ordered however we didn't get it until closer to 12:45.

overall it was a nice lunch, good food, good portions. nice place to occasionally eat but won't be a regular during the work week.

relaxed brunch. although i enjoy the breakfast every time i go, i do wish the servers were a little more attentive. it takes forever to get a refill on coffee or water and it is amazing how many times a server can walk by you without making eye contact! the food is very good, the portions are small but i enjoy not feeling stuffed and bloated at the end of the meal, quality over quantity. the coffee is also excellent!

lunch was pleasing to the senses. i've been holdingbackfrom writing a review until now because it was roughly 2 years since i last had a meal there and just never had time to go back. finally had the opportunity to drop by for lunch, and everything was as wonderful as i had remembered.
/
the food:
i had the bbq pork on wild rice bread with a side of their 'pommes frites' (aka french fries). of course, their fries were delicious and were at the perfect temperature to not scald my tongue upon the first bite. they were crisp, lightly seasoned, and did not have a heavy-starchy texture in your mouth. the aoli sauce was a nice subtle alternative to ketchup, but i found the taste to be so subtle that it was neither here nor there.
the bbq pork uncannily resembled the chinese bbq pork that i'd eat at home, with the exception of the tangy sauce. combined with the coleslaw and wild rice bread, the sandwich was a tour de force. the flavors and textures are more than the sum of its parts.
i do have a grip however, and that is regarding the little bit of pasta salad partially hidden underneath the fries. it just tasted okay. the texture was good, but the flavors simply didn't feel "there", if you know what i mean.
/
overall:
the atmosphere was comfortable and the room was filled with sunlight. the waitress was very polite, and i left feeling full after enjoying my meal (unfortunately, too full to leave room for their famous desserts). i suggest that if you have groups greater than 2, then make a reservation, because the restaurant was filling to capacity once the clock struck twelve.
