fantastic greek spot - check it out. after reading some good reviews, my wife and i decided to give zorba's a try this past friday. upon entering, i was a little bit disconcerted at the disproporitionate number of older people there. admittedly, even as a foodie, i'm not always drawn to the hippest and trendiest spots in the city because for the most part the more established places are doing it and they are doing it right. some newer places can be more about atmosphere and decor than food. while i was a little bit confused about the dual italian and greek menu, all of my doubts were quickly put to rest when i realized that the greek portion of the menu is simple, traditional and expertly done. yes, if you're ever craving traditional greek food, but don't want to wait all year for the greek festival, than zorba's is theplaceto go. fantastic yeast rolls, followed by a small greek salad with a delicious in-house dressing. add anchovies? yes! my wife had the combination platter, which includes, among other things, succulent grilled souvlaki (pork, which is also available as an entree) and the best stuffed grape leaves i've ever had. seriously, these murder the ones at the greek festival. i had the chicken picatta, an italian dish which was very good, but not great. the sauce was a little bit thick and i would have enjoyed it if it had more of a lemon bite to it. however, do not let this discourage you. stick to the greek dishes and you'll be more than happy. the gracious owner was kind enough to let us sample some of the hummus and baba ghanoush, which were both heavy on the garlic (which is the way i like it) and subsequently delicious. finally, i finished off with a piece of the tiramisu (also made in-house). let me preface this with a side-note: i have tried tiramisu almost anywhere in the world i go where it is made in-house (best places: italy and mamma 'zu). the tiramisu here gets an 8/10. it is subtle (meaning, not overly sweet) and the cream cheese is light and fluffy. unfortunately, it did not have the alcoholic kick that is characteristic of good tiramisu. the staff (especially the owner) are knowledgeable and extremely friendly. in summation, we've added a new restaurant to the short list. if you're craving greek anytime, just go. you won't be disappointed.
