the toad on the road

been here a few times, and thought it would be agoodplace to celebrate a last minute birthday celebration for a friend. walked in last night and it wasn't buzzing like it usually is. i see management changes here quite often too. for alot of our friends it was the first time being there and thought the food was ok overall most of them had ribs, one had mexicana pizza he didn't enjoy to much. i had chicken livers it's definitely pub grub if that's what you're into. negatives were our waiter changed like 5 times was confusing, place closes at 11 but they were ringing a loud bell at 10:30 i'm assuming to chase us out and not for last rounds. standard has dropped unfortunately.

cool place to meet up for drinks and light munchies. the vibe is easy and the service is great. the food is okay. in my opinion it’s agoodplace to just catch drinks.

i have been to the toad many times and i have always found this to be my experience:
go there for a few drinks with mates and have chilli poppers as your only meal item and you will leave a happy girl/guy. if you want a reallygoodmeal though - this is not the place. the food has always been "ok" at best...at worst - i ordered the chicken schnitzel once and the spinach and butternut it came with were sour (as in totally off). i have found hair in my pizza on two separate occasions. i have had the pie and found 1 piece of meat in it - the rest was just gravy. 
the service is very very poor - you wait a long time if you dare to order food. the reason to go back though is the vibe and like i said - have a few drinks, get a few poppers and you wont regret it.

we've been here many times and overall the experience is good. food has always beengoodalthough service is often below par. selection of beer on tap is adequate. only major disappointment is the desert menu. you can have anything you like as long as it's ice cream. 😠 come on toad make an effort.

i love that place. the food is always excellent, thegoodtime guarantee, service is normally quitegoodand the prices are perfect. for a quick glass or a long afternoon the toad on the road is for me one of the best option.

i come here pretty often. recently, i've seen the standards drop though. unless its the springboks or the stormers, you will not have sound (even the proteas get the radio). pizza still pretty good, and the beers are cold. starting to fray around the edges and the place definitely needs agoodscrub-down..

great food at affordable prices. great place for a sundowner. love the location, as those living in the southern suburbs don't have to drive much to have agoodtime.

the local watering hole, in order to get this status, it must be amazing.   i personally think it has some of the best ribs and pizza you will find, if not the best in town.   going back tonight so they better be ready for us :)

nice atmosphere during the day with a very nice outside section for almost any weather.   they really have gone far beyond the ordinary on the layout of the pub as come rain or sunshine, there will be a place to enjoy your drinks and meal.   

good beers on tap and very friendly staff,goodcrowd of people, however it can get a bit rowdy once the sun goes down, but then again every pub does.    good spot to watch a bit of sport with mates as well

a great place for drinks and sport.goodservice and a relaxed atmosphere. always festive on a thur, fri and sunday. a must try is their new orleans pizza which also comes in a half pizza half salad option!

after a very stressful day yesterday we decided that we need a beer stat. we had not been to toad on the road in a long time and decided that we would meet up there with 2 other friends. the waiter was great, serving our our beers very quickly. it was late afternoon and the place was pretty quiet. after our second beer we decided that we need a little nibble. 2 of us ordered the starter portion nachos (r60) and the other 2 of us ordered the (rump) trinchada (r60). the nachos were not bad tasting, but not the best we have had either. the trinchada on the other had was appalling, despite the menu saying (rump) the meat was the consistency of stewing beef, tough as nails & we even found a bone. the sauce was watery and the dish looked more like a soup that a trinchada. we will give them another try because last time we were there the food was reallygoodand the waiter was amazing. beer was great no fault there and they have castle tank beer.

had a very poor experience. the barman did not know the difference between a lager and an ale. i ordered a prego roll with hot prego sauce. these days it is so easy to google a sauce recipe do why would you serve a bland, unseasoned tomato sauce with a touch of chili and call it prego? the steak was nice. the chips weregooduntil i choked on a long hair. the waitress spent some time carrying messages between me and the manageress who did not think it worthwhile to address the problems herself. how sad

a great venue to watch a sports game and enjoy some pub grub with a beer or two. i ordered a pizza for the table to share as a starter. was very pleased with the generous toppings, great flavour and well made base. pizza gets a 8/10. then i let was on to the ribs, although i noticed that the prices have increased considerably since my last visit, i gave it a bash! the ribs were cooked to perfection, i literally pulled the bone right out of the flesh. it was a great rack of ribs as the portion of meat to bone was generous. the basting wasgoodenough to have me licking my fingers rather than use the finger blow provided. overall rating for the ribs 9/10. considering how full the venue was as they were showing the south africa game vs samoa, our service was outstanding. well done toad!

i have been bcc a few times for this same menu and unfortunately have to report that the ribs have never again been worth mentioning. they are dry and tough. the kitchen staff seem to be taking short cuts and not boiling them for long enough. this really is a shame. i will therefore be dropping their rating.

cosy pub and restaurant with decent sized portions. home brew very refreshing and well priced.goodplace to catchup on some sport with a relaxed atmosphere

no matter what you are in the mood for, the toad will accommodate you. different areas for your different moods, menu has everything from pizza to burgers, salads, nachos and steaks. nice variety, nice vibe. can be chilled out sunday restaurant for a relaxing easy lunch or can be the local pub with a great local vibe.
well priced,goodfood. service is friendly and efficient.

the toad in lakeside kinda appeals to everyone. i like that they have different areas for each mood - the vibey bar area for the locals, a lovely outside area for sunny days and warm nights and the inside restaurant area to enjoy a meal. the pizzas and ribs are delish. it's comfortable and relaxed. agoodspot for all.
