after many recommendations and reading articles praising the mule we finally had a chance to try it out. we started with the friend cheese curds....so delicious and the batter was incredible and crunchy! my favorite dip for the cheese curds was the marinara sauce! i ordered the herbivore and i added bacon. it was an incredibly satisfying and the bacon wasn't exactly necessary. it's perfect for a vegan or vegetarian or a carnivore who loves vegetables! my side was the onion rings and they were awesome. my husband had the cortez and it was meaty and spicy! i loved the jalapeño corn bread! my husband's side was fries...they are good but they are out shined by the onion rings. my kids had the mac and cheese...its homemade perfection! the mule is my new favorite!

this place is solid. always great food and great service. funky sandwiches and excellent sides. atmosphere is consistent with the plaza district. macaroni pony and fydh are at the top of the list.

onion rings so fluffy they remind me of angels halos. wish they'd add a separate space for people to wait for table. feels awkward hovering over people eating and even worse when you get to trade places. the food is delicious and a worthy tradeoff for the wait situation.

good place for a drink. love the cheese curds and the beer selection. if you don't like nutmeg then you won't like the fries. i wasn't a fan of them. sandwich was ok.

the sum of many visits.. good food, that is worth having a drink with. i've been enough times that i don't mind saying in all honesty that the service is s*** four out of five visits. these people need to pay attention to customer service because what's coming out of the back of the house is pretty fantastic.

simply delicious.. my wife and i finally made it over to the mule last night. it was a saturday and we expected it to be overflowing with people, but the wait wasn't too bad, about fifteen to twenty minutes. after a few minutes we saw some open seats at the bar and decided to eat dinner there instead. our bartender was a great server who was extremely polite and very attentive. the okie mule cocktail is crazy good and i would highly recommend it. the food was a much higher quality than what i had expected. i ordered the herbivore and was pleasantly surprised that the dish had a great balance of flavors. this wasn't just a grilled cheese sandwich, it was a meal. prices were good for the quality - two meals and two drinks for just over thirty dollars.

we were very pleased with our experience and will be returning.

today i met jesus.. he was working at the mule and he said to me, clear as day 'order the macaroni pony, you won't regret it.' so i followed his lead and i did. today, i tasted heaven. it is the combination of delicious cheesy macaroni, accompanied by sweet sweet pulled pork and nestled together between to sturdy walls of jalapeno cornbread.
if i were on death row, this would be my final meal.
if i had a sick friend in need, this would be my gift.
if i could eat this everyday and not die or go broke, i would.
so go to the mule, and eat the macaroni pony, you won't regret it.

service was slow and rude. didn't know it was such an inconvenience for the server to wait on us. serious training needs to happen! traci acted hateful and aggressive. there is obviously no management in place. will not be back.

if only the service were better!!!. my boyfriend and i love the mule. different variations of cheesy, melty sandwiches is a dream come true for this meat-free gal. we especially love brunch because they have an awesome vegan gravy that even my carnivore boyfriend prefers over the regular gravy. (we get the okie poutine and dip them in the gravy...sometimes our sandwiches too if we can save any of the gravy...rare occurrence)

cons: the service has always been unfortunate here. i can confidently say this because i have been a server for 5+ years and my boyfriend is a flex manager, so we are familiar with what good service looks like. one time our server could never be found. we almost tipped another guy who kept giving us refills when our server was mia. it wasn't even busy. another time our server seemed almost annoyed with us as soon as we sat down. he wasn't upbeat, didn't offer any suggestions, and brought us our ticket when we had planned on getting one last drink. maybe he was cut and we were his last table, i'm not sure. very unfortunate because the food is delicious. also, there is very little seating. very small inside and outside seating so the waits can be 40+ minutes when it isn't even peak restaurant hours.

the unicorn of mules. when a restaurant's entire menu is centered around variations of one single dish, it's hard not to make the assumption that maybe, just maybe, the place is onto something. the mule takes everything you thought you knew about the humble, everyman cheese sandwich and amps it up. for any honest human, it's impossible to deny the allure and simplicity of cheese meets bread. face it, you can still almost taste the grilled cheese sandwich you had on plain ol' wonder bread as a kid (or iron kids, if you were among the affluent). visit the mule and your childhood self is going to collide with grown up you in a crazy culinary mash up that even marty mcfly couldn't comprehend.
for instance, consider the dilemmas involved in making a choice at a good barbecue joint. with all those options, what do you get? pre-k you picks macaroni and cheese, but college freshman you definitely springs for the pulled pork. you're in luck, you and you, because the macaroni pony delivers both! the tender, saucy pulled pork mutes the macaroni accompanying the sharp cheddar laden sammie, but that won't matter a bit once you realize what sort of bread you're dealing with. the bread, yes i said it, the bread is the star of the porky, cheesy, buttery dish. it's a hybrid cornbread/sourdough blend, with minced jalapeno peppers added into the dough. buttered before hitting the flat top, the grain bookends holding all your barbecue style fillings get a crisp edge that contrasts the soft innards of the sandwich perfectly.
perhaps, instead, you're feeling particularly adventurous. maybe you're thirteen and you really want to impress your best friend who triple dog dared you to try goat cheese. or maybe you're in the mood for something comforting. you might be twenty-six, on the road, and just jonesing for that stick to your ribs goodness that makes you feel at home again. whatever the case, the f.y.d.h. has you covered. this grilled cheddar cheese entree proudly touts a fried just-over-easy egg, fresh and creamy avocado, and thick, smoky bacon, on made from scratch sourdough bread. these elevated staples plus the subtle tang from a smear of rich, velvety goat cheese and a kick from the (much too thinly applied) layer of pepper aioli send this one outside the borders of great to otherworldly; no longer quite a grilled cheese, but one of the best comfort food sandwiches you'll ever indulge in.
with all this talk of pre-adolescence nostalgia inducing fare, it would be pure foolishness not to include the mule's french fries and onion rings. after all, who hasn't engaged in multiple 'who has the best fries' debates with the entire cafeteria? whether you were a die hard mcdonald's, burger king, arby's, jack in the box, or whataburger supporter (nobody in their right mind picks wendy's so i won't even mention it), the mule caters to your palate. dredged in a seasoned coating, the fries are crisp and the onions are tender without being slimy. a slight hint of nutmeg in the batter gives them that unexpected grown-up spark, and really sets them apart from even the better fried sides offered up by expert greasy spoons around town.
with stellar sandwiches and fried goodness that appeals to every age of me, this is one restaurant i'll yearn for back home. i don't get the chance to visit okc often, but when i do you can bet i'll be a regular a the mule.
