the mule makes a mean grilled cheese. heard about the mule finally opening up in the plaza district, and we couldn't be happier. we had our little man, which we were a little concerned how family-friendly the place was, but our fears were set to rest as soon as we entered. parking could be an issue on weekends, but we had no trouble pulling right up to the building, which has many suites it seems. our waitress was prompt and friendly with the just the right amount of attentiveness and the beer (coop and mustang on tap with many other selections both in draft and bottle) was ice cold. we were going to have the fries with the white gravy but were informed that it would be a 15 minute wait as they made more, so we opted for the fried watonga cheese curds served with ranch and marinara. very nice, indeed, and little man was pleased as punch to eat off of mommy and daddy. for our meals, we had the cortez, with killer braised short ribs and grilled jalapenos on sourdough, and the big ass grilled cheese, served with your choice of five cheeses and any style bread. you get a nice selection of sides, so we went with the onion rings and the house tomato soup, both of which were perfect.
the sandwiches...well, what can i say? i didn't order the cortez, but you can bet your hot tamale i will next time! i have no idea what cheese they piled high on the big ass, but the melted goddess of a sandwich was perfect, with or without dipping into the comforting tomato soup with a basil topping. we were offered dessert, which changes and happened to be a grilled peanut butter and jam with chocolate and some sort of warm raspberry reduction sauce, if i correctly recall. we had to pass due to our distended stomachs, but we will certainly look forward to trying the sweet stuff next visit. it's a dangerous thing we live so close as i can already tell this place will enter my limited list of regular spots to hit each month. and if you hear any snide comments about the placed being "hipster," well you can tell that person to shove it. this place is doing it right, and we enjoyed the minimalist, open decor and "indie" rock. we saw all walks of life there, and i don't think toms and skinny jeans were on their minds while munching on the simple comfort food.
this place makes me long for the cooler months when we can enter the warm arms of the place from a blustery, grey day to soak in the good music, relaxed atmosphere, and the pure joy of the grilled cheese your mom wished she could make (at least my mom!).
