lunch treat & souveneir. went to this restaurant with hubby around lunchtime. it was pretty crowded so we opted to sit outside on a very beautiful day. we were promptly seated at a table that faced the street and the view of the bustling art district was a very relaxing conversation starter. he had the turkey sandwich with avocado and i got the staple big assgrilledcheese with bacon. i really love this restaurant. as a parting gift, we both got to keep our don't be an ass cups.

i had heard all about theirgrilledcheese with macaroni and cheese inside of it so of course, that's what i ordered!  much like the burger i had at flatire burgers  that also had mac & cheese inside.  i'm pretty sure you could throw m&c on anything and i would eat it.  well, maybe not anything. and there it is....the macaroni pony : jalepeno cornbread, chipotle bbq pulled pork, 3 cheese mac and cheese, and a pickle.  is your mouth watering yet?? they also have a big assgrilledcheese (love the name).  it didn't really matter who ordered what because we all got sandwiches and split them four ways.  i love going to a place that has a selection of "different" beers. please. we ordered the okie poutine appetizer - beer battered french fries, house white gravy, watonga cheese curds.  cheese curds  sounded we

grilled cheese, you’ve come a long way baby. the belovedgrilledcheese sandwich has, in reality been around for longer than we know in one form or another. in the 1920′s however with the invention of pre-sliced bread and processed cheese, it really started becoming a staple. flash forward to today where it is now becoming an art form. and here in oklahoma city, no one doesgrilledcheese sandwiches better than the mule.

it changed my life. i mean i'd been hearing good things about the mule since they opened - but the plaza district is a bit off the beaten path and for someone from norman...just don't get up that way too often. wish i'd gone sooner. won't be long before i go back.

appetizer: fried cheese curds served with ranch and marinara. don't need the ranch and marinara. these things were perfect. light and airy and cooked to just the right level of golden brown. mouth is watering just thinking about it.

i partook of the macaroni pony. it was just crazy enough to work. and work it did. i don't know how they're baking up jalapeno cornbread in a loaf - but they are and it's perfect. the pulled pork was cooked to just the right level of doneness and was moist and flavorful. the mac'n'chee rounded it out perfectly. fries appeared to be of the frozen-breaded variety. but it seems they make them their own by, again, cooking them perfectly and then adding just a bit of cinnamon - which totally works. i'd still rather have fresh cut - but these will do.

dining companion #1 had the fancy pants. again - perfection. she really likes the chicken/pear/brie harmony. dining companion #2 had the big assgrilledcheese. apt name. cheese oozing out of it. the accompanying tomato soup was beautiful with some thin sliced fresh parm on top.if you're wondering whether you should go - just go. now.

the mule is an awesome place. if you go during the weekend on an evening you'll likely have issues finding a close parking spot and there will be a wait to get seated.

the decor and atmosphere is dimly lit and wood everywhere. they serve up modern versions of comfort food, mainly high quality sandwhiches.

the macoroni pony and thegrilledcheese are my favorites. cant go wrong with the tomato soup. the beer battered fries are freakin' amazing! we often call it in and get it to go. pro tip: get thegrilledcheese with mac and cheese on it and a aide of tomato soup - awesome during cold weather!

the service can be hit or miss. it is a small place and gets crowded at times. again, parking for this location can be less than ideal. it is a bit on the hipsterish side but not you wont feel out of place.

my girlfriend and i have eaten here many times. the food is always consistent in taste, portion and temprature - even when we get it to go.

i would suggest eating here during a weeknight or lunch during the weekend. after your meal, walk down to roxy's ice cream social for desert!

ps. trust me on the beer battered fries!

if you're game for very uniquegrilledcheeses this is the place for you. i got the macaroni pony which was pretty good but the only one i was really interested in trying. it was pretty greasy so i didn't feel so well afterwards. my husband really enjoyed this place. he got the fancy pants and really loved it. i enjoyed the experience of something this unique but probably won't be returning anytime soon. as for my husband, he would probably come back more often.

simply delicious.. my wife and i finally made it over to the mule last night. it was a saturday and we expected it to be overflowing with people, but the wait wasn't too bad, about fifteen to twenty minutes. after a few minutes we saw some open seats at the bar and decided to eat dinner there instead. our bartender was a great server who was extremely polite and very attentive. the okie mule cocktail is crazy good and i would highly recommend it. the food was a much higher quality than what i had expected. i ordered the herbivore and was pleasantly surprised that the dish had a great balance of flavors. this wasn't just agrilledcheese sandwich, it was a meal. prices were good for the quality - two meals and two drinks for just over thirty dollars.

we were very pleased with our experience and will be returning.

the unicorn of mules. when a restaurant's entire menu is centered around variations of one single dish, it's hard not to make the assumption that maybe, just maybe, the place is onto something. the mule takes everything you thought you knew about the humble, everyman cheese sandwich and amps it up. for any honest human, it's impossible to deny the allure and simplicity of cheese meets bread. face it, you can still almost taste thegrilledcheese sandwich you had on plain ol' wonder bread as a kid (or iron kids, if you were among the affluent). visit the mule and your childhood self is going to collide with grown up you in a crazy culinary mash up that even marty mcfly couldn't comprehend.
for instance, consider the dilemmas involved in making a choice at a good barbecue joint. with all those options, what do you get? pre-k you picks macaroni and cheese, but college freshman you definitely springs for the pulled pork. you're in luck, you and you, because the macaroni pony delivers both! the tender, saucy pulled pork mutes the macaroni accompanying the sharp cheddar laden sammie, but that won't matter a bit once you realize what sort of bread you're dealing with. the bread, yes i said it, the bread is the star of the porky, cheesy, buttery dish. it's a hybrid cornbread/sourdough blend, with minced jalapeno peppers added into the dough. buttered before hitting the flat top, the grain bookends holding all your barbecue style fillings get a crisp edge that contrasts the soft innards of the sandwich perfectly.
perhaps, instead, you're feeling particularly adventurous. maybe you're thirteen and you really want to impress your best friend who triple dog dared you to try goat cheese. or maybe you're in the mood for something comforting. you might be twenty-six, on the road, and just jonesing for that stick to your ribs goodness that makes you feel at home again. whatever the case, the f.y.d.h. has you covered. thisgrilledcheddar cheese entree proudly touts a fried just-over-easy egg, fresh and creamy avocado, and thick, smoky bacon, on made from scratch sourdough bread. these elevated staples plus the subtle tang from a smear of rich, velvety goat cheese and a kick from the (much too thinly applied) layer of pepper aioli send this one outside the borders of great to otherworldly; no longer quite agrilledcheese, but one of the best comfort food sandwiches you'll ever indulge in.
with all this talk of pre-adolescence nostalgia inducing fare, it would be pure foolishness not to include the mule's french fries and onion rings. after all, who hasn't engaged in multiple 'who has the best fries' debates with the entire cafeteria? whether you were a die hard mcdonald's, burger king, arby's, jack in the box, or whataburger supporter (nobody in their right mind picks wendy's so i won't even mention it), the mule caters to your palate. dredged in a seasoned coating, the fries are crisp and the onions are tender without being slimy. a slight hint of nutmeg in the batter gives them that unexpected grown-up spark, and really sets them apart from even the better fried sides offered up by expert greasy spoons around town.
with stellar sandwiches and fried goodness that appeals to every age of me, this is one restaurant i'll yearn for back home. i don't get the chance to visit okc often, but when i do you can bet i'll be a regular a the mule.

it's a bar. the hostess told us it would take 35 minutes to get a table, it took five. one member of staff smiled, and that was when leaving the check, otherwise no smiles and quite surley group. one of the hostesses picked at he nose constantly even while preparing drinks. the food was well prepared except the signature sandwiches weregrilledto being burned. i asked one server to identify the food he brought out, and he seemed quite put out that i asked. needs a visit by chef ramsay!

surprisingly good. located in a congested area and a cramped facility, i wasn't expecting what i found. our waiter was friendly and helpful in navigating us through the menu. the macaroni pony caught my eye--a sandwich full of yumminess that made me feel like a kid again. bbq beef topped with macaroni andgrilledto perfection...i liked it so much i tried to replicate it at home, and it was a hit with the family. my friend had another type of sandwich that was really good as well , and the salad was fresh. look past the congestion and cramped quarters, and let yourself enjoy really good unique food.

don't judge a book by it's cover. small, noisy, cramped, looks like you're sitting in someone's garage, takes a while to get your food but then your plate comes and omg that's one amazinggrilledcheese sandwich and how do they make those onion rings (vidalia onions maybe) and suddenly you're a fan and you plan to come back again (seriously those onion rings are great).

malnourished bartender skills. several people, albiet of nascent trendie personification, informed me of a diner that serves the all conclusivegrilledcheese sandwich. not so long ago, toying with the idea of actually mounting the seemingly cheesy prevarication, an associate and i left the restaurant just north of the mule, and decided to try thisgrilledcheese haven.

we bellied up to what seemed like a bar full of goblin hats and pubescent facial hair with all eyes deeply buried in the screens of their mobile phones. we waited for almost five minutes until an alpaca hat clad bartender skipped all salutations, threw down our menus and walked away. the aforementioned was indeed indicative of our time to exit, but seemingly excusable, the bartender was slammed...

we ordered 2 unsaid irish stouts, followed by what seemed to be a cheesy italian after school special sandwich. the bartender dropped our cans in front of us, and then to our horror, she delivers two frozen mugs and again walks away without a hint of concern. finally, she comes back and we ask for pint glasses, she doubles them up and drops them in front of us.

the food was below average, but good for the for the comfort food craving crowd i'm sure. the said restaurants venue beckons the multi-screened broadcasting of sports, and i expect that wings will soon be on the menu-engulfed in cheese and sandwiched between bad service and sophomoric attempts at casual dining.
