underwhelming food. as an expat south african i've been craving proper fish 'n'chipssince arriving here. i've yet to find fresh cod in america so i'll be kind and assume the proprietor is honest in his claim of "fresh". neverthless the fish was of good quality, flaky and white, although strangely shaped like a tinkie (twinkie) instead of the familiar fillet shape. the batter was tasty, but thin and too soft. maybe another minute in the fat fryer? the fries were delicious and perfectly seasoned. however they were not chips, they were french fries. i know it's psychological, but when you grow up on "lekker slop chips", substituting them for fries leaves one wanting.

i was disappointed by the very american choice of "appetizers", with not a steak finger, sausage roll or scotch egg in sight (the latter, strangely, is a wednesdays-only "entrée" item.) i had a bit of my guests' bangers and mash, and it was very good, as was the shepherd's pie (though i'm used to minced lamb, not beef). the bit of steak & ale pie i tasted was no better than the fray bentos variety found out my local pick 'n' pay supermarket back home.

the atmosphere is nice and "englishy" and the wait staff friendly and explains the menu well. the drinks choice was excellent. in summary, it's good food, but not great. i recommend it for anyone interesting in experiencing english food, but if you're a homesick expat, you may be disappointed.

i am a londoner so was quite excited to give this place a try and was looking forward to my steak and ale pie.

the atmosphere was good and i liked the phone booth and the union jack pool table. the drinks were also good and my husband enjoyed his guinness. sadly, that was where our satisfaction ended.

the pastry on my pie was soft and under-cooked and the meat was so full of pepper i couldn't eat it. i was told by the waitress that it was to cater for the locals. thankfully my husband has more of a heat tolerance than me so we switched and i had his fish and chips. it tasted ok but nothing special. the fish was a lot smaller than uk portions and it looked factory made rather than in-house. thechipswere regular fries rather than the steak cutchipsthat usually accompany fish.

the waitress told me that the owner was british but none of the staff was.

my opinion is, if you are going to open a british restaurant, then the british food should be just that. if you are going to season everything to cater for the locals, that's fine, but give the place a different name.

we have had some hit and miss here. i think it really depends on who's cooking that day. but the food has been incredible to good. fish andchipsare a must. i wish they would bring back the cheese plate and the dips for the chips. the atmosphere is to die for.

we enjoyed our food... but all in all there wasn't anything special about it. i did have one complaint-- the fish andchipscame with only 2 pieces of fish! i don't know too many people that can get full on 2 small strips of fish! and the price tag--$12. not worth it to me. but the atmosphere can't be beat! i recommend coming for a game and having a pint! but maybe eat before you come.

authentic atmosphere, and good shepherds pie. but that's it. my 8 year old and i both ordered the fish and chips. the fish was apparently put in the fryer before the grease was hot and was soaked full of grease. it was not edible. thechips(fries) were subpar. we left disappointed.

have visited several times, love certain dishes.. my family has visited several times and we really enjoy the pulled pork and spicy slaw sandwiches. i will agree some reviewers that the food hasn't been consistent, sometimes the pork is dripping with sauce and is too messy to eat, other times there very little slaw, other times there is plenty. i'm not sure if we've experienced different kitchen staff or what. we experienced a hostess that was not nice at all but the wait staff has been excellent and very willing to fix any problems. drinks have been inconsistent too but we visited a lot during the world cup and they were very busy. i hope to see improvement in consistency because because i really love the shepherd's pie but the fish andchipsare lacking flavor and are full of grease. i'm glad i didn't try that one first. it's good when you know what to order.

bye bye birdie! it is with .... bye bye birdie!
it is with heavy heart i write this review because as an ex pat englishman i really liked it here......
sadly the menu has been stripped of everything british save for a few frozen items. a reuben sandwich come on!
i used to come for fish (cod) andchips.... british fish andchipsis traditionally cod or haddock in batter with fresh thick cut fried potatoes...what we were served is so far removed it is rediculous.
the fish is now pollack ( a cheap frozen greasy fish) battered in some dreck with pepper flakes and parsley!!! acompanied by some frozen bag us french fries . this abomanation is then served with a bulk produced glop. (tartar sauce) and the cheapest us sourced malt vinegar... no sarsons here diners....
pitiful!!
will not be back you have ruined a good thing, shame!
btw i am not a drinker but out of 30 odd tap beers only 4 are english and 3 of those are supermarket brands!!!
fail!!!

surmising "the londoner" in .... surmising the londoner in one word? that's easy: flavor.

you can taste everything. the subtle flavor of the fish. the beer in the beer batter. the potatoes in thechips(french fries). they add just enough spices and herbs to accent what you're eating, not hide it.

they don't load everything up with salt and grease to the point you've forget what you're eating. and, the toffee pudding is worth the drive no matter what part of town you live in.

our waitress, victoria, was polite, very we'll-mannered and prompt.

i recommend the londoner, highly.

the atmosphere alone is unlike anything else i've found in baton rouge. great place to go any time of the day or night. the food does not disappoint. fish &chipsis a staple item that is always good. pork sliders are flavorful. shepherds pie is pretty incredible as well. i've eaten here at least a handful of times and have yet to find something bad on the menu.

the londoner is an english style pub located on sherwood forest blvd. in baton rouge, la. true to form they have a very nice and large bar area with darts & pool tables..styled nicely and also had comfy couches, large chairs and big tv’s throughout the place. as i said it is styled nicely true to  standards of a real english pub. beautiful inside and they play most all soccer game from around the world.   the food however is a different story. i have never been to england but the food here for the most part is bland and boring. we sampled the scotch eggs (hard boiled egg wrapped in pork then breaded and fried) they looked amazing, but were almost tasteless. the sauce that same along side for dipping also tasted like nothing. we also had the “tower of london burger” which we found to be an average, run of the mill burger, again under seasoned and just plain boring.   fish andchips    the fish andchipswere the only thing we found to be tasty. although the portion siz

from a 'regular'. firstly, everyone, let's remember: this place is not necessarily styled on your typical restaurant. it is styled on a typical pub. as someone who spent twelve years in england and has thus frequented many a pub meal, i can tell you that pubs are more laid back. you would typically go to them for a lazy evening or weekend meal while you have drinks with friends or family. of course, you're still entitled to good service, but just bear this in mind. :)

my trips to the londoner are usually fueled by a wish to hang out with friends, with drinks, food and a game of pool, and i've always had a relaxing time. the atmosphere is laid-back, casual and fun. food has always been good (apart from my very first visit, where i had a very unfortunate run-in with an admiral's pie that has since thankfully gone from the menu), hot and ample-portioned. though i don't drink, it seems and i've been told that the variety of beers and ale is pretty good.

in terms of authenticity, of course you can't beat a real british pub since it doesn't have age behind it, but they do really well and you can tell they're gathering their decor and settling in. the food gets fairly close (apart from the sticky toffee pudding - which is still good), and i encourage everyone to try the loaded cheese fries and shepherd's pie, and the salsa for thechipsand salsa is fantastic. i've also had the smoked salmon, caper and cream cheese omelet which was pretty good. for the record yes, they do offer hot tea. :)

for those interested: pool has been around $6-$8 an hour and on occasion some of the cues and balls can be a little worse for wear, but granted, this isn't a pool hall - there are four tables upstairs along with two dart boards, a jukebox, fusball table and table shuffleboard. there are spots to sit outside and a balcony and additional bar upstairs (to bear in mind if you order food upstairs - the order has to be taken and has to come from downstairs!). brunch on sundays 10:30-3!

love it. have been here more than 10 times. food is always good... we've tried it all. i love their salads and my husband always gets steak and ale pie...and i'd be lying if i said i didnt help him eat it. i was really suprised by theirchipsand salsa...but as they say, even the queen likeschipsand salsa, and they're delicious. we have never had a server who was bad, they're more than willing to talk the menu with you. i'm reading through these reviews and i'm shocked to see bad ones. we had one potentially bad experience when they were overloaded w/ a party of 100...they told us up front when we came in that it might get interesting. we got our drinks and appetizers, then had to wait two hours for main course, our server was never far and always checking. as we were about to leave, they brought out the food (packed it to go)...gave us additional drinks, deserts...and charged us for nothing. not sure how they could've fixed the situation any better than that. if you went and had a bad experience, go back!

great food and atmosphere!. we thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to the londoner and long to go back. we tried a couple of different rounds of the beer samplers. green mussel appetizer as well as cheese fries (all yummy!). the fish nchipswere amazing! everything is fresh, the fish was beautifully flaky and crispy. the dill tartar sauce was so good i could eat it with everything. hubby got the steak and ale pie which was a big strong in flavor for me, but he enjoyed. i also tried the sheperd's pie which was also very tasty. for dessert we had the sticky toffee pudding and the fried bread pudding. all so good. great experience and anyone we've referred has said the same. cant wait to go back!
