the hussar grill

shortly after the original hussars opened in rondebosch in ‘64, my brother took me there to taste the “best steaks “ in cape town - and it was a memorable experience!
never had the opportunity to go back though, but never forgot it. although
when i saw that a branch had opened at the montecasino, i reckoned it was time to try it again.
we took a chance by not booking, so had to sit at the bar until atablebecame available.
the staff were friendly and helpful.
although the service was good, our steaks were no better than average - slightly overcooked and containing a small percentage of gristle - sadly not the best steak i have ever had, but not unpleasant.
we are prepared to give it another chance though, and try something other then steak.

a few weeks ago i was invited to visit the hussar grill at montecasino. i’ve heard great things about this premier grill house and so i was looking forward to the experience. my benedict and i arrived at the hussar grill on a busy week day evening and were quickly escorted to our table. we began with some starters. i opted for the mussel pot; mussels served in a white wine creamy garlic sauce. the sauce was flavourful and very tasty making the mussels a great choice. my benedict selected the springbok carpaccio. this was paper-thin slices of cured springbok loin dressed in an olive oil and balsamic reduction and topped with parmesan shavings. another great starter option. for my main, i went along with our helpful waiters recommendation; the chateaubriand. this was a succulent cut of beef fillet topped with brandy and flambéed before our eyes at thetable– certainly an entertaining delivery. the fillet was tender and perfectly cooked to my request. it was also served with a side of lovely béarnaise sauce. my benedict opted for the rump steak which was also perfectly prepared and very tasty. for dessert we shared the crème brûlée. the custard was silky smooth and delectable with a perfectly crunchy caramelised topping.

dinner before a show had a lovely vibe. service from isaac was on point, friendly and efficient. the menu makes it clear this is really a steak restaurant which absolutely suited me. there was also a reasonable selection of alternatives should you not be going steak. i ordered a rump steak medium rare, chips, veg, onion rings for thetableand a madagascar green peppercorn sauce. despite being cooked to a perfect med rare, the rump steak had absolutely no fat on it. i know some people complain if they are served steak with fat on it but that is a rump steak i'm afraid. it also adds considerably to the flavour of the meat when cooking. i can live with the no fat though however maybe giving a with or without option would be good. the part that really killed it for me though was the worcestershire sauce. the steak seemed to have been dipped in neat worcestershire sauce after cooking. this completely overpowered the meat flavor and destroyed the meal. even the sauce (which unfortunately had no depth of flavour to help in the battle) couldn't fight the worcestershire sauce into the background. simple seasoning would have changed this experience considerably.

went to the hussar grill restaurant for dinner before watching a show at the monteteatro. all in all it was a good choice! this place is really a steak restaurant. everybody on ourtablehad different cuts of meat which all was grilled to everybody's specific liking. i ordered the 600g t-bone (rare) and was not disappointed at all. it was grilled perfectly and had a good portion of fillet and sirloin to it. the food was really good (you must order the onion rings). my only complaint is the fact that although we ordered our food timeously and notified our waiter of our pending show, that the service was a bit slow and we had to rush in the end to finish our food before the doors to the show closed (but i can say that during this whole time all the staff members were still friendly and helpful).

we had very unpleasant visit. we made a booking. ws not made. they placed us outside in the cold raining weather while waiting fortableinside. people came after us which was did not booked. they also want to place them outside. they complain and was offered atableinside. before us. i will not visit hussar grill again. this was the first and also the last.

booked atableat hussar grill monte casino on a thursday evening, we were well received and ourtablewas ready and waiting - yay! we had an exceptional waiter - jared - he made wonderful and descriptive suggestions and he anticipated all our needs. really great service with a smile! such a pleasure! thank you jared!
we had a spread of meals: the lamb shank was a huge portion,delicious mash and a rich tasty gravy! calamari was also a large portion and well done! friends tried the blue cheese sirloin and pepper steak fillet - happy/stuffed tummies all round! wonderful comfort food! can't wait to return!
