the hussar grill

13.04.2019 a quick post show dinner before heading home to miss the storms. we were seated by probably the noisiest table, who were screaming not speaking to one another. i didn't realise the hussar grill montecasino has a rather limited menu, more for the #meatlover which i'm not complaining about.

i stuck with my usual fillet steak, (moutarde, double cream with blended mustards) and this time decided to go healthy with veg instead of fries. my family had a combination of chicken breasts, pork belly, trio of snails (garlic butter; smoked paprika and rosemary compound butter; and blue cheese), and hollandse bitterballen (double-cream béchamel studded with beef jus and beef bits, then crumbed and deep fried)

my fillet was cooked to perfection and the mustard sauce was delicious, so was my veggies. my dads snails were not as great as we expected the different flavours were not that different to one another.

we ordered cappuccino's before leaving but they were not very hot.

our waitress winnie was lovely, very friendly and helpful 👍🏻

would definitely go back again for the fillet and maybe try some dessert.

shortly after the original hussars opened in rondebosch in ‘64, my brother took me there to taste the “best steaks “ in cape town - and it was a memorable experience!
never had the opportunity to go back though, but never forgot it. although
when i saw that a branch had opened at the montecasino, i reckoned it was time to try it again.
we took a chance by not booking, so had to sit at the bar until a table became available.
the staff were friendly and helpful.
although the service was good, our steaks were no better than average - slightly overcooked and containing a small percentage of gristle - sadly not the best steak i have ever had, but not unpleasant.
we are prepared to give it another chance though, and try something other then steak.

a few weeks ago i was invited to visit the hussar grill at montecasino. i’ve heard great things about this premier grill house and so i was looking forward to the experience. my benedict and i arrived at the hussar grill on a busy week day evening and were quickly escorted to our table. we began with some starters. i opted for the mussel pot; mussels served in a white wine creamy garlic sauce. the sauce was flavourful and very tasty making the mussels a great choice. my benedict selected the springbok carpaccio. this was paper-thin slices of cured springbok loin dressed in an olive oil and balsamic reduction and topped with parmesan shavings. another great starter option. for my main, i went along with our helpful waiters recommendation; the chateaubriand. this was a succulent cut of beef fillet topped with brandy and flambéed before our eyes at the table – certainly an entertaining delivery. the fillet was tender and perfectly cooked to my request. it was also served with a side of lovely béarnaise sauce. my benedict opted for the rump steak which was also perfectly prepared and very tasty. for dessert we shared the crème brûlée. the custard was silky smooth and delectable with a perfectly crunchy caramelised topping.

couldn't decide where to eat until we bumped into jackie. her friendliness and enthusiasm won us over.
great food, great service, great atmosphere.
restaurants need more jackies.

hi celebrated our 53rd anniversary for lunch, 5 star treatment, plus a complimentary bottle of their red wine and two vodka martinis and an ice cream fruit and nut dessert , you cannot beat that service today! well done guys, we will definitely frequent more often.

upon arrival we were greeted by the front of house and we were introduced to a very friendly waiter..
after being seated we received a complimentary snack..
i was very impressed by the menu and the service overall..
i will definitely be back, i haven't had a combination of great food, service and value for money in a while..

unfortunately would not recommend the hussar grill at all. expensive cuts of meat at mediocre quality. don’t know what a chateaubriand cut of meat is after charging r225 for it and flavors of meat echo bland, dirty grill, sub quality food.

a truly consistent go-to spot for quality steaks. never dissapoints. also love their complimentary drink.

there was a little booboo with our table, but brian and rita more than made up for it. we had a lovely dinner and the service was great. we even went back after the show for coffee and dessert. thank you to the lovely staff and managers!!! we will be back for sure.

we visited hussar grill @ monte casino for a birthday dinner. a reservation was made which helped as the restaurant was packed. service: since upon arrival to departure we had fabulous service, friendly and very efficient waitress and staff. was pleasant. decor and ambiance: i really liked the warm cosy, welcoming feel of the restaurant, beautiful bar area with couple of magnum bottles of wines and champagnes displayed and which adds to the ambiance. one can be seated inside or out ... both amazing. drink and food: a very exciting and extensive drinks and food list with a few favorites. started with a baked camembert and plum sauce ... yum. also had the parmesan chicken breasts with mustard sauce on mash and it was so delicious.... just a bummer i had no more space for dessert! can recommend thg for sure and would definitely return to try more dishes and dessert! ✨

dinner before a show had a lovely vibe. service from isaac was on point, friendly and efficient. the menu makes it clear this is really a steak restaurant which absolutely suited me. there was also a reasonable selection of alternatives should you not be going steak. i ordered a rump steak medium rare, chips, veg, onion rings for the table and a madagascar green peppercorn sauce. despite being cooked to a perfect med rare, the rump steak had absolutely no fat on it. i know some people complain if they are served steak with fat on it but that is a rump steak i'm afraid. it also adds considerably to the flavour of the meat when cooking. i can live with the no fat though however maybe giving a with or without option would be good. the part that really killed it for me though was the worcestershire sauce. the steak seemed to have been dipped in neat worcestershire sauce after cooking. this completely overpowered the meat flavor and destroyed the meal. even the sauce (which unfortunately had no depth of flavour to help in the battle) couldn't fight the worcestershire sauce into the background. simple seasoning would have changed this experience considerably.

fantastic service. we appreciate the personal attention and the extra mile that our waiter kenneth and the owner francois took to make my hubby's birthday datenight a night to remember! we will be back. the hollandse biefstuk is amazing!

nice venue with lots of room at the montecasino. friendly service from the management to the waiters, everything was served with a smile. the meals were prepared to perfection with the meat still tender and juicy.

the ambiance was amazing. our waitress gave us top class service and the prawns were amazing. i had an awesome time here. we also got complementary chocolate vodka shots as dessert!
