great breakfast & brunch. we've been to general muir a few times for breakfast and brunch. the pastry basket is wonderful and the bagel's are great with the smoked/cured fish. the eggs are also something to try. service has been both good and mediocre.

took my sister to lunch to general muir today and they did not disappoint us! shared a ruben and the poutine. i think my sisters eyes rolled back in her head as she put the fork of poutine in her mouth. the ruben from the crunch of the rye bread to the sour and savory combination of the kraut and corn beef was perfectly balanced in taste and presentation. only complaint is that they had no rye bread to sell. just love that bread!

today was my day to try the general muir across from nih. it's an upscale deli---an interesting concept. te menu is full of traditional deli items, some with a twist. the décor is bright and sunny, a far cry from the flouresent ambience of a new york deli like katz's or the stage. the service was a little reserved but efficient. i tried the veggie reuben, one of those deli-with-a-twist items. it has two kinds of cheese and sauerkraut. the role of the meat is played by sliced beets. it's a pretty inspired idea; the beets give a meaty taste and texture. the only drawback, and it was a minor one, was that the beets, being much more slippery than meat, kept sliding out of the sandwich.

the misfit foodies go mishugina (crazy) for the new jewish delicatessen, the general muir! chef todd ginsberg joins ben and jennifer johnson of the west egg cafe for another popular and tasty venture. ginsberg, a jersey boy with a dream of opening a deli has moved on from bocado where his double-stack burger gained notoriety. what’s in a name? the uss general c. h. muir, ap-142 transport ship was launched november 24, 1944. the general muir takes its name from this ship, boarded by holocaust survivors, jennifer’s mother and grandparents, arriving in new york following world war ii. hanging on the walls are photos of the owners’ ancestors. the restaurant honors and continues their food traditions. counter service or table service? breakfast, lunch, dinner, brunch, cocktails, coffee or dessert? what a wonderful array of choices. i gathered with the misfit foodies for dinner at the general muir.

you can find the general muir at 1540 avenue pli'm, ste b-230, emory point, atlanta, ga 30329 in the heart of emory village. parking is along the streets (a bit limited) or there are a few lots if you don't mind walking (i'd advise this as the area is quite busy). i had heard about the general muir from a few friends and have been wanting to visit - unfortunately it's in a part of town where i don't frequent. i had an opportunity (wife out of town) and a craving for an exquisite burger in mind so made the muir my destination one late afternoon. i had heard and read about the general muir taking general menu queues from a traditional new york style jewish deli so i had a specific image in mind at the outset. i was literally blown away by the interior of this place on arrival - much more upscale than any deli i've visited - this place would make an awesome date-night destination (but note that they do close by 9:00 pm during the week).

we visited the general muir and had a horrible experience. food was just ok, place is pretty, the service was the worst i have ever experienced. server damaged my handbag after dropping a plate of food on it. server did not apologize, our server wouldn't bring replacement napkins and manager did nothing to make the experience better. over-hyped food and poor service.

if you're into breakfast, you cannot have missed the west egg café in west midtown and chef todd ginsberg replicates his success there with the general muir, an authentic deli experience. in a tribute to the new york jewish deli, meats are cured and smoked in-house and bagels are hand-rolled and kettle boiled. if you are from the new york/new jersey area or have visited often, you will find you are uniquely able to appreciate this gift to the atlanta foodie community.

had the brisket, curried puréed parsnips, roasted squash & kugel. the dinner was just ok and barely warm. disappointed in the dinner, but will give it another try for breakfast. i was hoping i would find a local spot where i won't have to order katz online; i guess not

have been here a few times now for breakfast and brunch. the smoked hash is great and full of flavor being one of the tastier hashes i have had. the pastrami is a must but what really shines is the burger which is smashed to the flattop and cooked to perfection. no frills with american cheese and pickles but hey we don't need any vortex topping bull here.

friday august 14 2015 was the first time i have eaten at the
general muir.

i had heard they had some of the best pastrami and corned
beef in atlanta.

a friend recommended we have lunch there.

as i am a big corned beef and pastrami nut, i agreed and met
him there.

i was excited about the pastrami sandwich and couldn’t
decide between the 7oz with chopped chicken liver and russian dressing but went
with the 14 oz for $18.

for that price i was expecting  the leanest, tastiest pastrami cooked and
handled with care.

unfortunately that was not the case.

i asked for the 14oz and ask to have my bread toasted
lightly.

what came was a greasy, fatty, overcooked pile of what
looked like dark grey meat on an over grilled piece of bread.

i even asked them to check with the chef to make sure it was
the 14 oz as it looked very short to me.

when i opened it to add some mustard, i found 2 of the
slices, to be only slabs of fat and the rest falling apart over cooked meat
with no real flavor profile, just hot mess.

as i was on kind of a job interview with my friend, i did
not want to make a scene at this luncheon.

however, this meal was absolutely the worst i have had, in
this city in a very long time.

and i could not understand the reason for the high price. as
this was very poor quality product, they had produced.

also i stated they forget the pickle with this sandwich to
which i was told it was extra $1.

so a subpar pastrami sandwich for $18 which didn’t even
included the pickle to complete the required flavor profile to accompany, what
should have been a great sandwich.

joey d’s oak room has the finest 7 & 13 oz corned beef
sandwich in the city.

they gently roll 7 & 13 oz of the leanest, most juicy
corned beef into a large meat roll and place it lovingly between great jewish
rye bread and include the whole dill pickle for $17.95 for the 13 oz.

i would run to have that sandwich again and i will.

i would not return for this pastrami ever again.

when i pressed my friend about his lunch he shurged his
shoulders and it was eahhhhh.

i don’t understand all the good review, as i have no reason
to return to this establishment, ever.the service was attentive.

no promotion for this general

we had heard that the general muir had a very good breakfast. so we went and found the restaurant located in the center of the emory point complex. 3 hours of free parking is provided in the nearby deck.

the restaurant has a sort of new york vibe with lots of little white tiles and windows that look in on the kitchen.

the breakfast menu is focused on a few main, complex dishes. also available are bagels and a cinnamon roll (though not the day we were there).

we had the general muir breakfast which included a couple of eggs (can’t really mess that up) and some very fatty pastrami, a couple of only ok latkes and some sour cream and very runny apple sauce.

the poached eggs on grits with mushrooms was more successful with some delicious marinated mushrooms and good grits.

we also had the french toast. it looked very promising with a nice, crunchy exterior coated in ground nuts. unfortunately, since it was so thickly cut, the interior was a soggy and totally unappetizing mess. we scooped out the interior and ate the exterior which was very good.

prices are commensurate with a higher-end restaurant and pricier than some of the other breakfast places that we enjoy around atlanta. $50 (counting the tip) for breakfast for 3 was a little high, especially when considering the mixed quality of food.

i doubt that i would return to general muir for breakfast. maybe lunch or dinner would be more successful.
