the misfit foodies go mishugina (crazy) for the newjewishdelicatessen, the general muir! chef todd ginsberg joins ben and jennifer johnson of the west egg cafe for another popular and tasty venture. ginsberg, a jersey boy with a dream of opening a deli has moved on from bocado where his double-stack burger gained notoriety. what’s in a name? the uss general c. h. muir, ap-142 transport ship was launched november 24, 1944. the general muir takes its name from this ship, boarded by holocaust survivors, jennifer’s mother and grandparents, arriving in new york following world war ii. hanging on the walls are photos of the owners’ ancestors. the restaurant honors and continues their food traditions. counter service or table service? breakfast, lunch, dinner, brunch, cocktails, coffee or dessert? what a wonderful array of choices. i gathered with the misfit foodies for dinner at the general muir.

you can find the general muir at 1540 avenue pli'm, ste b-230, emory point, atlanta, ga 30329 in the heart of emory village. parking is along the streets (a bit limited) or there are a few lots if you don't mind walking (i'd advise this as the area is quite busy). i had heard about the general muir from a few friends and have been wanting to visit - unfortunately it's in a part of town where i don't frequent. i had an opportunity (wife out of town) and a craving for an exquisite burger in mind so made the muir my destination one late afternoon. i had heard and read about the general muir taking general menu queues from a traditional new york stylejewishdeli so i had a specific image in mind at the outset. i was literally blown away by the interior of this place on arrival - much more upscale than any deli i've visited - this place would make an awesome date-night destination (but note that they do close by 9:00 pm during the week).

if you're into breakfast, you cannot have missed the west egg café in west midtown and chef todd ginsberg replicates his success there with the general muir, an authentic deli experience. in a tribute to the new yorkjewishdeli, meats are cured and smoked in-house and bagels are hand-rolled and kettle boiled. if you are from the new york/new jersey area or have visited often, you will find you are uniquely able to appreciate this gift to the atlanta foodie community.

over priced and stuffy. pickle plate full of stuff that is not a pickle we had 2 small slices of pickles for $5.00... strange that a bowl of matzo ball on sunday brunch was $7.00 but at other meal periods it is $6.00. the corned beef sandwich at $14.00 had less then 1/4 lb.. the staff is stuffy and over all not a friendly place. i suggest max's in birmingham for a truejewishdeli.. no brisket, tongue or tuna salad on the menu.. very dissapointed

not worth the drive. my wife i looked forward to dining at the general muir, but were greatly disappointed. we had to drive about 40 minutes from our home and it was not worth the drive. it was not ajewishdeli, like we were led to believe. the menu is very limited and the matzo soup was expensive and really did not have any kick to it. it cost 40 dollars for lunch as everything is really overpriced. i think even if we lived closer, i would not dine there again.

i’ve been excited to try the general muir since their opening but unless you live close to the emory area it’s pretty hard to get to; case in point my 30 minute drive in little traffic from vinings. all bitching aside, my group and i were very pleased and it was worth the trip. the lox and smoked salmon plates were the best i have had outside of manhattan and included all the necessary accompaniments – red onion, capers, tomato, egg, etc! the east sider salmon plate the gm has everything a truejewishdelicatessen connoisseur could desire, from schmaltz to matza balls to a really tasty reuben that, god forbid, was better than the pastrami on rye… reuben – check out the thick cut corned beef and melty cheese!!! we tried the regular pastrami and the pastrami with liver and the liver was great but a litter overpowering for the pastrami; if you like liver, get it and just scrape a little off to enjoy with any left over crust! above average regular pastrami on rye   pastram with liver…a who

i’d bypassed the general muir quite a few times, mostly because it looked rather dark from the outside. recently though, the general muir has been getting some really great press as one of the topjewishdelis in the country.

the general muir is my new favorite brunch spot. brunch is a very important meal, and when it’s done right it can make your entire weekend feel special.  i’ve now had three excellent brunches over the past few months at the general muir and have officially escalated it to the very top of my brunch go-to list.  here’s a peek inside:   and here’s the q dd on the general muir : the general muir is a tribute to the classic new yorkjewishdeli, returning it to its hand-crafted roots. traditional favorites are honored — pastrami is cured and smoked in house, bagels are kettle boiled and hand rolled — and joined by dishes going beyond tradition, focusing on fresh ingredients and simple preparations. the restaurant is named for the refugee transport ship that brought co-owner jennifer johnson’s mother and grandparents, holocaust survivors, to new york in 1949. the general muir serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch, and offers an espresso bar serving locally-roasted batdorf & b

best local deli. having dined at some of the finest deli's in new york, miami, boca, chicago, and toronto, i can honestly say this place is head and shoulders above every other deli in atlanta. once you've dined here you'll never be satisfied by goldberg's again.

the menu is limited, but what they have is well executed.

best way to describe the place: fresh, local, and chef driven meets classic new york stylejewishdeli.

food - 8/10 - zingerman's and carnegie deli are still better
service - 10/10
ambiance - 10/10 - probably the cleanest deli i've ever been to

shame on us for not trying general muir sooner! it’s only a short walk away and has been talked about like crazy since it opened recently. it’s an awesome modern homage to the old fashionedjewishdelicatessen, and it’s hard to find anything to complain about. we had high expectations knowing that the place is owned by the same couple who runs west egg cafe, and the same chef who created the famous (if you live in atlanta) bocado burger. we were not disappointed!

at long last, the general muir is open. the restaurant, a modernjewishdeli, is located in the emory point development near emory university and the cdc and is brought to us by the folks who own the west egg cafe. former bocado chef and friend of mine, todd ginsberg is the restaurant’s executive chef. breakfast menu highlights include open faced bagel sandwiches, latkes, hazelnut crusted french toast and turkey, roast beef, pastrami and reuben sandwiches are featured for lunch. the general muir serves a custom coffee blend made for the restaurant by batdorf & bronson.

i made it over to the general muir yesterday for brunch and i left content and full. for those of you that don't know, the general muir is the newjewishdeli concept by the folks at west egg and the former chef of bocado. it's located in a new retail district on the emory campus and across from the cdc. the menu is made up primarily ofjewishdeli items like bagels with smoke/cured fish, matzoh ball soup, and the "what would ajewishdeli be without a" pastrami sandwich. i got the latter and i think it's safe to say it's the best pastrami sandwich in atlanta. but consider this - is there any competition? if you say jason's deli, i'll smack you in the mouth i'm neal diamond. the pastrami comes stacked high with some mustard on rye, as it should. overall it's a delicious sandwich but once you've had langer's  (which i consider to be the best sandwich on the planet) to compare to, well it's no comparison at all, really. the pastrami was peppery and had the unctuous fatty flavor/bits that
