the misfit foodies go mishugina (crazy) for the new jewish delicatessen, the general muir! chef todd ginsberg joins ben and jennifer johnson of the west egg cafe for another popular and tasty venture. ginsberg, a jersey boy with a dream of opening a deli has moved on from bocado where his double-stack burger gained notoriety. what’s in a name? the uss general c. h. muir, ap-142 transport ship was launched november 24, 1944. the general muir takes its name from this ship, boarded by holocaust survivors, jennifer’s mother and grandparents, arriving in new york following world war ii. hanging on the walls are photos of the owners’ ancestors. the restaurant honors and continues theirfoodtraditions. counter service or table service? breakfast, lunch, dinner, brunch, cocktails, coffee or dessert? what a wonderful array of choices. i gathered with the misfit foodies for dinner at the general muir.

we visited the general muir and had a horrible experience.foodwas just ok, place is pretty, the service was the worst i have ever experienced. server damaged my handbag after dropping a plate offoodon it. server did not apologize, our server wouldn't bring replacement napkins and manager did nothing to make the experience better. over-hypedfoodand poor service.

they had me at pastry basket. i was full, but thefoodwas so good i just kept eating. we ordered the pastry basket which contained the lightest most buttery flavorful brioche. we saved most of the pastry basket for our travels. i also ordered the grits with mushrooms and a poached egg along with rye bread. i hated rye bread.. before i had theirs. i'm sold! thefoodwas balanced and flavorful. our waitress was great. next time i'm in atlanta this i will return!

lunch needs to start at 11:15 in the emory area. love thefoodhowever, we work at the emory/cdc area and are at work at 6:30-7am. our lunch starts early as we leave for home at 3. we cannot get a decent sandwich here until 11:30 as their lunch crew does not even come in until then. they will not even work with you. all the others open at 11. one restaurant has already gone under. lets see how long this one will last.

very disappointed. took almost an hour to get ourfoodand they were not busy. turns out they lost order. as an apology the manager brought us a bag of left over pastries they had because lunch was slow. the pastries were stale and we just left them.

not worth the price as the corned need sandwich was small and fatty.

great pastrami sandwich. there are so many positive and great reviews that i had to make a stop here and see what all the buzz was about. the general muir has a great set up if you’re going solo they have a bar and if you’re out with friends there is plenty of comfortable seating. i was set on getting the pastrami sandwich and it was great. the bread it came on was toasted and the pastrami definitely was the star. great tasting sandwich i would buy again. we got the poutine gravy fries with cheese curds, parsley and we added the chopped pastrami. that was the highlight of the meal. i would go back just for that alone. as the lunch went on i kept seeing different sandwiches that others were ordering and could easily see that there was a lot to discover about this restaurant. pricing is on the high side for what you’re getting, but i don't mind paying more for greatfoodespecially if i'm going to be talking about it...

absolutely fantastic!!. took my family there for dinner for my mom's 87th birthday. it was our first time so we had no idea of what to expect. the hostess was very friendly and helpful since i had to make special arrangements since both of my parents use walkers. they set up a table for us near the door. the waiter was fantastic: friendly, present, but not overbearing. and thefoodblew us away. i had the trout and it was as good as or better than the best seafood places in town, and their appetizers were delicious. the desserts are out of this world; not too sweet, fresh and really great. all i can say is that for such a young restaurant, they have a wonderful atmosphere, a great customer service approach, and make some of the bestfoodin atlanta. you need to give them a try. (ps: i'm not related, nor had i ever been there before, i just think people who work so hard and are so good at what they do, deserve our business.)

i love all thefoodand the pho in particular. the indochine version of pho has a flavoursome broth that does not come with a weird aftertaste of msg.

highly over rated. ok, yuppie heaven. i've been in ny delis -- in new york! this ain't one of 'em. service was great, place is clean, staff are very nice --foodis ok -- and vastly over-priced. $12 for a reuben -- w/not even a pickle? pickles are $1 extra. totally "a la carte,"don't get a soda unless one can is enough -- i stuck w/iced tea so i could, hopefully, get refills w/o paying another $2.50 -- for a high-ball sized glass.

and the parking deck is definitely a problem. all the tenants at emory point should raise hell about that one.

lunch is lacking. following a fabulous dinner, i decided to try the gm lunch. not thrilled. the reuben contained too much fat and was difficult to eat. i ordered with a side of potato salad that was really, really..bland. while edible the lunch didn't live up to expectation in comparison to dinner three days earlier. the kitchen must get with the program in gettingfoodout more timely, especially for a lunch crowd. i've been to the gm four time over the past week and find 20 minutes from point of order to receipt for b'fast and lunch unacceptable.

step it up!

fantastic dinner!. while headed to another restaurant at emory pointe, i discovered general muir open for dinner. after being seated i was handed the dinner menu and to be honest was somewhat reluctant to stay given ingredients such as kale, turnips and rutabaga. my dining companion and i split the dinosaur kale salad followed by crispy trout and roasted duck as entrees. i'm the ultimate foodie and let me tell you that every item was perfection to the palate. this was truly one of the top 10 meals i've had in atlanta. our attendant was knowledgeable of the menu and preparation. we chose patricia green pinot noir that paired nicely with both entrees. as a resident of druid hills i plan to make frequent visits to general muir. the overall experience was fantastic and commend staff and management on a job well done.

welcome to the neighborhood!
