they lost me shortly after i walked in the door. knowing the popularity of this restaurant, and it being friday night, i called ahead to find out how long a wait for a table was (half an hour), then asked if they could put my party of three down for half an hour from the time i called; they said it was absolutely no problem, they could reserve a table for me. we left and arrived in twenty minutes, which was early, so i figured we could expect to wait ten to fifteen minutes, which is no big deal...we even saw a group of four leaving at the same time we arrived. when we walked inside, however, we were told it didn't matter that we had called ahead, we'd have to wait half an hour for a table. just like we'd never called. when we asked why they had said they could reserve a table in the first place, the host got a little huffy and said he gives his best estimate, but that he will not hold a table for anyone who isn't there. we protested that we were actually early and that he'd said he could reserve a table, and besides that a group had left just as we walked in the door. he just walked away from us. no "i'll check," no "i'm sorry," he just walked away. the wait time ended up being shorter than 30 minutes, but why were we treated that way at all? why did they tell us that they could reserve a table for us in half an hour?
the rest of the staff we encountered was polite. the food was good, but it wasn't among the best i've ever eaten or anything. the fried pickles were good, and the black bean/sweet potato burger was good as well, but it was extremely difficult to eat as it is very mushy and falls completely apart when you bite into the sandwich. very messy. wasn't expecting that at all. the fried green tomato on top was very good, not sour, lightly fried, the way it's supposed to be. my husband enjoyed his shrimp po' boy, and my mother liked her meatloaf - except for the fact that the menu says it has bell peppers, but the peppers are in fact a spicy variety that she wasn't expecting and had to pick out of it in order to continue eating it.
i have to say, i would have definitely given a "like" to this restaurant if not for the treatment we received when walking in the door. first impressions are really important, and that first impression clouded the rest of the experience for our entire party. i know everyone has a bad day sometimes, and maybe the greeter was having one...but i've never had a job where i didn't have to leave my bad day in my car or on my bike before walking into the building. certainly never had one where i could spread that bad day around to customers. i would gobackonly if i was with someone who wanted to eat there - i would not choose to return there on my own.
