key largo
very fast. ambience is, well let’s call it rustic. like an old florida place on the side of the road in the keys rustic unpretentious. the blackened dolphin sandwich (not the mammal porpoise, but what has now succumbed to being called “mahi mahi”) was cooked perfectly. a great variety of seafood on the menu as you would expect based on the name. i would go back again.

this came highly recommend, but i wasn’t super impressed. the outside ambiance is relaxed and coastal, but unfortunately we were seated indoors where it was white linen and formal. we were told 30 minute wait, but noticed numerous open tables for a tuesday night.

bay shore breeze ($9) - this drink was prepared well and refreshing, but i thought it was overpriced for the size (a slender pilsner)

crab cake - fresh and prepared well. dressed generously with sauce and served with black eyed peas and corn. could use some heat/spice.

mahi mahi - so...i got this because the 3 course meal was almost the same as an entree ($33). i was disappointed to see the mahi mahi in strips...it was basically fish sticks...and because of the pecan crust, the fish wasn’t that moist. the swiss chard (?) garnish was still very firm and could have used additional cooking. the sweet potato grits were very good.

key lime pie - i took it to go, but it looks devine and was generously portioned.

we stopped at this restaurant because we heard the key lime pie was good. however, we were underwhelmed. the food was acceptable, but the ambiance was terrible! first, we could not hear ourselves think. second, the restrooms were woefully small, and they were not very clean. i will however admit that the key lime pie was good; perhaps we just had a bad experience.

my husband and i went to the fish house for dinner our first night in key largo. hearing it was a great place to eat we thought we’d check it out. we were seated right away in a very busy, cramped dining room.
we were taken care of nicely by our waiter, actually two of them. we had a large crab cake for an appetizer which was pretty good.
i had the shrimp dinner and the large shrimp were lightly dusted with something (flour?) fries, coleslaw and corn on the cob but it didn’t really matter as the shrimp were tasteless and on the rubbery side. cole slaw was just okay.
my husband had a combination plate with mahi-mahi, scallops, and clams, fries, corn on the cob and coleslaw. he said it was okay but nothing too exciting.

inside does not match the outside. beautiful "date night" quality atmosphere even though my family of 6 was here for lunch. service was superior. they started us with samplings of gumbo and shrimp chowder, both really good but the shrimp chowder was our favorite. if they had brought us these before we ordered we may have actually ordered some of the shrimp chowder. the fish bites were very tasty with a little heat, yum! the dressing they came with was subpar like mayonnaise-y ranch out of a bottle. they deserved a better, more complimentary dip/sauce. all the seafood was cooked to perfection. i 1st thought it was a little pricy but portions were generous. never been a fan of jumbo shrimp so i had the large which was quite large enough. cooked perfect and very tasty.

the wait to sit inside was an hour to two hours so our party had to sit outside. it was hot and humid.. almost unbearable but the fans they had outside worked just perfectly. plus, if you ordered the mimosas and drinks that definitely would cool anyone off in a matter of minutes. the prices were usually between 11-20 and the sushi was like 7-10. prices weren't bad, i ordered a salad for $15 and was delighted, the drink i got was $9 and i had $5 mimosas which ran my total to $36. crazy? maybe so, especially for a college student. in the end, it was worth it since i left satisfied and content. will definitely be back in the future!

we were guided here by a local who was looking to impress the visiting crew from corporate who were my liaisons during the job. ended up being a party of eight, some picky eaters in the bunch, too...... why tag along to a seafood place if you don't eat seafood?! but the boss lady insisted and everyone tagged along...i was prepared for the worst..... ended up liking the menu and felt we got a great value. the head of the table ordered plenty of appetizers from grouper bites (great!) to the sushi (ok) to spring rolls(odd sauce, but tasty) and then we ordered huge platters, several cocktails were had as well. the signature dish of shrimp and grits "a ya ya" was pretty good but my seafood platter was the best of what i tried-and i got to try everything around the table, since portions were humongous. i was able to substitute snapper (grilled) for tilapia (really?tilapia? good grief) and it was excellent . i also got as much of the platter grilled as i could, but the massive oysters were fried... and we're very flavorful considering how bland the raw ones have been in pensacola so far. i ate way too much, finishing this platter....come hungry, or be warned. turns out this place met its reputation.... i liked it for what it was. there were a few marks against them, though..... the deck was covered in flies....and the fans didn't help. i spent too much time shooing flies than i wanted.... and there was some confusion when a runner delivered a plate to our table when no other food was present-clearly a mistake-and a waiter passing by recognized it as his missing entree.... not a big deal, but shows some poor training or lazy waitstaff... was quickly handled, but could have been easily avoided. looking for a casual, delicious, traditional seafood house? you'll
do no better than here (despite some poor reviewers experiences) and while 385.00 for eight might seem a little high, we did dent the bar and appetizers menus pretty hard before the meal....,i think we did alright..... would come again, when i'm back around these parts!

it had been a while since me & the hubby got to go out to dinner by ourselves so we choose the fish house (was last there about 2 yrs ago) to start off we had to wait 15 mins (not a big deal) but when we were seated there was only 3 tables occupied (why the wait???) when i didn't like the table the hostess gave us (samantha?) she kind of got a little snippy (i didn't want to be sandwiched between 2 tables of a 4 top) well the waitress (shanna) was great but the food was bleh!! i got the parmesan crusted fish, which had no flavor. my husband got the fried oysters and if wasn't for the crust there wouldn't of been anything to eat. the oysters were tiny & really dark colored. all in all i would not go back to this place. if you want some good seafood go to chet's in pace.

went here today for a friend's birthday, and the service was horrendous. our waitress, jennifer, took 20 minutes to take our order. the food finally came out 1 hour after we ordered, and the plate was sizzling hot, but the food was cold. we also got charged $1.50 for yaya sauce that we never got, and had to get it taken off. when we ordered a slice of chocolate cake, it came with hair in it. finally, 18% tip was mandatory...it was included and we really did not think it was deserved. it actually felt like service was sub-par because the waitress already knew she would get 18% from everyone. never going back.

on a side note, don't order the calamari appetizer. it's battered fried calamari with a strange, honey-like sauce. the calamari was okay, but the sauce was...really not great with fried calamari.

can't thank them enough for staying open past their official closing time to feed us. super delicious! the seafood platter was very well cooked. lightly fried, not too heavily breaded, and well seasoned. the gumbo and the chowder were also very good. only complaint is that the turnip greens were a bit too salty, but that's a minor quibble. overall very impressed.
