it can go either way. i've had good and bad experience at suwu. the food is quite unique, however, if you are hungry this isn't the place for you. the portions are extremely small, but at the same time very tasty. you have to order a lot of food and each dish is around 12-20$ so it adds up quickly especially if your a big group or having a few drinks. the atmosphere is really trendy, and great before hitting up st laurent, but if your hungry this wont be good for you. they also change their menu quite often which sucks, since if you like something beforehand and go back another time it might not be on it

the worst brunch i had in a long time. i've been there other times for a 5 à 7, but never to the brunch. i have to warn everyone, the food on the brunch menu is terrible. eggs were not cooked and had peaces of eggshell on it. beacon was not very cooked either! the entire dish was just a bunch of awfull things put together on a huge dish. just terrible. also, the hipster service... i normaly don't care to wait a little bit until someone comes to assign us a table, but when two girls are just beside you talking about a party and don't even look at you for a couple of minutes and then say hello, as if that's perfectly normal, now that's a little bit too much. this place is just plain bad.

service was a little disappointing but it was a busy night, the atmosphere was great and i really enjoyed what i got. had the salmon tartare, the triad caesar and a cocktail called the dirty south, all worth a try.

great food, great music, great crowd. amazing food and drinks in evenings. mac and cheese grilled cheese, just saying it sounds too good to be true.
amazing brunches also, quite cheap for what you get. and there are mimosas.

great music, although sometimes a bit too loud to hear you friends. great deco. the only down side is the service: the hostesses and some of the waitresses can be somewhat...bitchy.

other than that, amazing place to hang out during 5 à 7.

the abominable grilled mac'n'cheese. so, i've really enjoyed the first few times to the "neighborhood bar," but i was so appalled with the service recently.

the person serving us was curt, rude, and dismissive (which is not acceptable for being in the service industry). when ordering the grilled mac'n'cheese (i have ordered this on a number of occasions), i had expected to be served with the homemade tomato sauce. but got served with heinz ketchup with added spices (ewww...i would leave it to my roommate to make my grilled cheese for free).

when proceeding to ask the waitress what had happened, she dismissed me and curtly said that the ketchup was made in house and that there was a new chef. end of story. might she had thought to mention this while i was ordering it would have saved me an awful meal and bitter after taste. what happened to good old friendly service? this place is no longer my go-to place.

advice: so if you order here, make sure to ask a 101 questions before ordering. don't let the waiters/waitress intimidate you to rushing your order. take your time.

if you are looking for a nice restaurant-bar in montreal to hang out with friends, suwu is the place to go. amazing drinks, delicious food and a cozy atmosphere… what can we ask for more? i absolutely fell in love with the decor. with its wood panels, dimmed hanging lights, ivy trellises, booths, high tables and vintage furniture, suwu projects vibes commonly seen in brooklyn bars; very chic, simple and romantic. the ambiance is very laid-back on week days or upbeat on the weekend with the hip hop jams playing in the background. the menu is amazing. it is simply delicious and full of surprises with its refined twists on culinary classics. my friends and i had the grilled cheese mac & cheese (a nice crunchy crust and a soft and tasty mac & cheese in the middle), the salmon tartare, their home-made pogos, the cheeseburger empenadas and the veal meatballs tacos. i highly suggest you to try these out. as for the drinks, you will find a very interesting, original and hilarious named-cocktails such as the big booty hoe, the thug passion and the wu-tang. these are the all-time suwu’s favourites. the service is also really nice; our server was accommodating, always smiling and quick which can be rare in this area of montreal. needless to say, suwu definitively is worth all the hype it has. this restaurant-bar is a very original and trendy without being too unpretentious and where everyone will feel at ease. i highly recommend you to try this place out as i am sure you will enjoy and fill up your stomach as much as i did! all the pictures were taken on various social media platforms under the suwu tag.

super overpriced. this is ordinary pub food with smaller printed stretched or with carbs and sugary fatty sauce. about 20% over priced for food and booze. trashy beers too. fast declining ratings are telling

dope as f****. i dont write these often, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. showed up for burger week with friends, and their burger was most definitely solid: not too fancy, perfectly juicy, and the spiral fries give it that nostalgic feel. our server was very cool and accommodating, so shout out to good service in mtl (finally). i had the mac and cheese, which at $5 was a crazy steal: nice crunchy crust on top and a mellow cheesy flavour with real chunky mac in the skillet underneath.
i gotta give a big shoutout to the potato salad, surprisingly. while not as bacony as advertised, the medley of herbs inside left me baffled, with what we later determined must have been a hint of dill in the dense bouquet of herbs. ive never spent so much time debating a potato salad, so i give crazy kudos for making a usually unremarkable side dish such an enigma.
i would recommend suwu to anyone any day for sure. props, guys.

i had the salmon tartare brunch, which consists of tartare, bagel, poached eggs, hollandaise, these weird pink pickled onion slices and a hash brown.  it was very very good.  i've been vocal about my annoyance at the constant appearance on menus of the 4 things montrealers are crazy about (tartare, lobster, foie gras and oysters) but on this occasion i relented and ordered a tartare as the waitress recommended it.  have to say the bloody caesar was virtually undrinkable, very heavy on the tabasco and i literally had a coughing fit after each sip.  i struggled, got most of it down, i'm not a wimp where these things are concerned either. anyway, i loved suwu .  had a hunch that i would.  pretty much e

4/5 for suwu. suwu has been the talk of the town for a while now, especially after being voted #10 best new restaurant 2014 by cult mtl. this plateau drinking establishment boasts a decidedly "gangsta" attitude (sort of), which is funny, but also something that can't exactly be taken seriously. they offer an incredibly good cinq à sept - a very important aspect of the city's culture. simply put, a 5-à-7 is happy hour à la montréal. during these hours suwu offers a completely half price drink menu, which means that kicking your evening off right is easy.
i arrived right at cinq and briefly entered the restaurant. i quickly took in all of the beautiful wood finishes, noted that the people who i was meeting had not arrived yet, and went back out to the terrace. (in montreal, a patio is called a "terrace." if you refer to it as a "patio" you'll expose yourself as not from around these parts.) the terrace was lovely for a warm summer evening with whimsical string lights draped about, an outdoor bar, and even some couch-type seating. i sat at a round table and waited for the rest of my party to arrive. no better way to occupy my time than to peruse the cocktail list! this resulted in me ordering a thug passion (hendrick's, raspberry vodka, midori, watermelon, lime, cucumber - $12.00 regularly, $6.00 for 5-à-7) after asking the super friendly server which drinks were the most fruity. (i'm a girl, what do you want?) i loved how juicy with watermelon this drink was. it tasted totally boozy, but also very summery and refreshing because cucumber and watermelon can do no other.
i also decided that a snack was in order until we got to the portion of the night that involved "real eating" and ordered up the popcorn (bbq - $5.00). i love that so many restaurants are putting fun and creative popcorn offerings on their menus these days! the portion size was huge at this place, making the dish perfect for sharing and ideal for mid-booze munches. the bbq flavour packed a powerful and spicy punch! there was nothing shy about the seasoning, but it wasn't only painful heat because it tasted spicily delicious.
by this point, i was ready for drink #2, which also means that my recollection of everything that followed might be slightly hazy. time for a big booty ho (cachaca, cointreau, abricot brandy, banana, orange, pineapple - $12.00 regularly, $6.00 for 5-à-7), ordered mainly for its name alone. alright, not only for the name, for the fruitiness as well. i didn't notice the flavour of alcohol as much in this one (for obvious reasons) but i did notice the tropical fruit salad that seemed to be taking place in my glass. and i liked that.

it was now time to start getting some real food into my system and there were plenty of enticing options. i had seen a past menu online that showed a lobster roll as a choice, but no such luck on this visit. my group decided to begin by sharing the homemade pogos (maple mustard - $10.00). this wood block came with five pogos protruding from it and there were four of us, so it was almost an even split between everyone. these were delicious! i loved that it was just a small taste of the classic deep fried breaded dog on a stick. the maple mustard was more interesting than the usual plain mustard or ketchup and you could see that they were taking familiar foods and elevating them to something with a little bit more panache.

i watched the beer battered fish tacos (market fresh atlantic cod, cilantro sour cream, pickled veggies - $14.00) go by and get delivered to other tables and they looked really good, so i got me some of those! the fish was battered just the way that i like it, to a golden perfection. the tender white fish remained juicy, encased inside. i really loved how the pickled vegetables added a whole different flavour dimension that you wouldn't normally expect in a taco. while this was really good, i couldn't help agree with my co-diners that something seemed to be missing. something to bring these tacos over the edge.

well, the best was saved to last. i had been seeing pictures of the grilled cheese mac 'n' cheese (homemade ketchup - $8.00) posted all over the place, and this was the main dish that i had come excited to try. this type of sandwich had already found a safe place in my heart after i had spent a fair amount of time eating and loving molly's eats gourmet food truck's mac melt (mac & cheese with bacon and slow roasted pork stuffed in a grilled cheese sandwich) back in edmonton. so i was pleasantly surprised (and a little bit sad) when this one was even better. no meat in this version, just ooey, gooey, perfect mac 'n cheese, oozing out of everywhere. i loved that there was some serious cheddar business going on and that it had a job to do. a serious job. the ketchup that came with the sandwich was also excellent and so much better than the bottled kind. i'm not sure that combining two different comfort foods into one epic dish has ever worked out so well. i will return again and again for this magic between bread.

the food was so much fun at suwu. so were the cheap drinks. i want their lobster roll to come back, and i also want to try their sweet chili calamari. someone should suggest that they try putting some pulled pork into their grilled cheese mac 'n' cheese. (okay, me.) apparently they even do breakfast! i'll be back suwu, i'll be back.

suwu is a great restaurant and bar, great any day of the week. if you really want to get a sense of a bustling suwu, head over on a friday night, and enjoy a late dinner. they've got great cocktails, including the thug passion, and a number of hip-hop inspired drinks. now don't let the hip-hop scare you, it's really a mixed and hip crowd, typically 21 and over. 83 % jean-phillipe chartier a writer, designer, artist, foodie and enthusiast living in montreal, canada. you may also like... 0 barroco restaurant 29 jul, 2014
