food is great. rest not so much.. first of all the first impression was bad. the hostess didn't speak a word of french which deeply offended our very bilingual party. the food was amazing, so that's good. so were the drinks. the service was just ok, we only got appropriate silverware after having to ask twice and we never had any water refills. music was good but waaaayyyy too loud. last negative point is the table layout, our chairs were literally back to back with those of the table behind us which led to a lot of friction everytimesomeone moved. all in all food is what's more important in a restaurant so this is a positive review, but there's definitely room for improvement.

it can go either way. i've had good and bad experience at suwu. the food is quite unique, however, if you are hungry this isn't the place for you. the portions are extremely small, but at the sametimevery tasty. you have to order a lot of food and each dish is around 12-20$ so it adds up quickly especially if your a big group or having a few drinks. the atmosphere is really trendy, and great before hitting up st laurent, but if your hungry this wont be good for you. they also change their menu quite often which sucks, since if you like something beforehand and go back anothertimeit might not be on it

dope as f****. i dont write these often, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. showed up for burger week with friends, and their burger was most definitely solid: not too fancy, perfectly juicy, and the spiral fries give it that nostalgic feel. our server was very cool and accommodating, so shout out to good service in mtl (finally). i had the mac and cheese, which at $5 was a crazy steal: nice crunchy crust on top and a mellow cheesy flavour with real chunky mac in the skillet underneath.
i gotta give a big shoutout to the potato salad, surprisingly. while not as bacony as advertised, the medley of herbs inside left me baffled, with what we later determined must have been a hint of dill in the dense bouquet of herbs. ive never spent so muchtimedebating a potato salad, so i give crazy kudos for making a usually unremarkable side dish such an enigma.
i would recommend suwu to anyone any day for sure. props, guys.

4/5 for suwu. suwu has been the talk of the town for a while now, especially after being voted #10 best new restaurant 2014 by cult mtl. this plateau drinking establishment boasts a decidedly "gangsta" attitude (sort of), which is funny, but also something that can't exactly be taken seriously. they offer an incredibly good cinq à sept - a very important aspect of the city's culture. simply put, a 5-à-7 is happy hour à la montréal. during these hours suwu offers a completely half price drink menu, which means that kicking your evening off right is easy.
i arrived right at cinq and briefly entered the restaurant. i quickly took in all of the beautiful wood finishes, noted that the people who i was meeting had not arrived yet, and went back out to the terrace. (in montreal, a patio is called a "terrace." if you refer to it as a "patio" you'll expose yourself as not from around these parts.) the terrace was lovely for a warm summer evening with whimsical string lights draped about, an outdoor bar, and even some couch-type seating. i sat at a round table and waited for the rest of my party to arrive. no better way to occupy mytimethan to peruse the cocktail list! this resulted in me ordering a thug passion (hendrick's, raspberry vodka, midori, watermelon, lime, cucumber - $12.00 regularly, $6.00 for 5-à-7) after asking the super friendly server which drinks were the most fruity. (i'm a girl, what do you want?) i loved how juicy with watermelon this drink was. it tasted totally boozy, but also very summery and refreshing because cucumber and watermelon can do no other.
i also decided that a snack was in order until we got to the portion of the night that involved "real eating" and ordered up the popcorn (bbq - $5.00). i love that so many restaurants are putting fun and creative popcorn offerings on their menus these days! the portion size was huge at this place, making the dish perfect for sharing and ideal for mid-booze munches. the bbq flavour packed a powerful and spicy punch! there was nothing shy about the seasoning, but it wasn't only painful heat because it tasted spicily delicious.
by this point, i was ready for drink #2, which also means that my recollection of everything that followed might be slightly hazy.timefor a big booty ho (cachaca, cointreau, abricot brandy, banana, orange, pineapple - $12.00 regularly, $6.00 for 5-à-7), ordered mainly for its name alone. alright, not only for the name, for the fruitiness as well. i didn't notice the flavour of alcohol as much in this one (for obvious reasons) but i did notice the tropical fruit salad that seemed to be taking place in my glass. and i liked that.

it was nowtimeto start getting some real food into my system and there were plenty of enticing options. i had seen a past menu online that showed a lobster roll as a choice, but no such luck on this visit. my group decided to begin by sharing the homemade pogos (maple mustard - $10.00). this wood block came with five pogos protruding from it and there were four of us, so it was almost an even split between everyone. these were delicious! i loved that it was just a small taste of the classic deep fried breaded dog on a stick. the maple mustard was more interesting than the usual plain mustard or ketchup and you could see that they were taking familiar foods and elevating them to something with a little bit more panache.

i watched the beer battered fish tacos (market fresh atlantic cod, cilantro sour cream, pickled veggies - $14.00) go by and get delivered to other tables and they looked really good, so i got me some of those! the fish was battered just the way that i like it, to a golden perfection. the tender white fish remained juicy, encased inside. i really loved how the pickled vegetables added a whole different flavour dimension that you wouldn't normally expect in a taco. while this was really good, i couldn't help agree with my co-diners that something seemed to be missing. something to bring these tacos over the edge.

well, the best was saved to last. i had been seeing pictures of the grilled cheese mac 'n' cheese (homemade ketchup - $8.00) posted all over the place, and this was the main dish that i had come excited to try. this type of sandwich had already found a safe place in my heart after i had spent a fair amount oftimeeating and loving molly's eats gourmet food truck's mac melt (mac & cheese with bacon and slow roasted pork stuffed in a grilled cheese sandwich) back in edmonton. so i was pleasantly surprised (and a little bit sad) when this one was even better. no meat in this version, just ooey, gooey, perfect mac 'n cheese, oozing out of everywhere. i loved that there was some serious cheddar business going on and that it had a job to do. a serious job. the ketchup that came with the sandwich was also excellent and so much better than the bottled kind. i'm not sure that combining two different comfort foods into one epic dish has ever worked out so well. i will return again and again for this magic between bread.

the food was so much fun at suwu. so were the cheap drinks. i want their lobster roll to come back, and i also want to try their sweet chili calamari. someone should suggest that they try putting some pulled pork into their grilled cheese mac 'n' cheese. (okay, me.) apparently they even do breakfast! i'll be back suwu, i'll be back.

yummy. for montreal’s poutine week they featured an amazing poutine “pootie tang”: rosemary fries, deep-fried cheese curds, bacon, maple & sortilège which was to die for. as were their ribs but most importantly their mac-n-cheese grilled cheese. drinks not that phenomenal but the food was great. they also had deep fried pumpkin pie that i didn’t havetimeto try because they were kicking us out for the next group. the service wasn't great at all.

fails to meet the hype. i've been to suwu a total of three times and eachtimei leave more disappointed than the last. the food is really mediocre, the drinks are alright (i've enjoyed their cheap, tap beer) but the service is seriously is downright awful.
the firsttimei went to suwu, i cannot complain about the service as much as the next two times. my friends and i had gone on a tuesday night so it wasn't too busy, our waiter was nice suggested us a couple of plates since it was our first time--we went with the lobster rolls, fried chicken and biscuits, beef and salmon tartar. i was excited for the lobster rolls, only to be disappointed with how warm the entire plate was and lacked any freshness let alone flavour.
the secondtimei went to suwu, we were a much larger group of people and the waiter seemed very uneasy how to split bills and said we could not each separately have our own bill which was bizarre. even after suggesting we all pay our meals separately and just pay for the drinks we order immediately after he seemed very unsure of whether or not that was possible or not. i had the mac and cheese grilled cheese that night with the cookie dessert---this was maybe the onlytimei was impressed with the food, the grilled cheese was ok but the cookie was amazing.
the lasttimei went to suwu was during poutine week and i have never been so disappointed with a dish, drink and service as i was that time. we had reservations and were placed at the bar. when i asked the waiter why we didn't have a table he proceeded to rudely answer that a reservation is just a spot in the resto and not a table---right...anyways we ended up getting a table but we're told we had to make it quick and not stay past 7, and believe me after this start of the night my friends and i were not planning to stay past 7.
we were four girls and one of them was ten minutes late, he only handed us our menus but never brought one for our friend even as he came to take our orders and saw us passing her a menu back and forth. the poutine to say the least was super disappointing despite how delicious it sounded, there were no stand out flavours and it was cold. we had to ask for water, only to have it filled up twice. our drinks took super long to come and lacked any alcohol, probably due to it's cheaper 5@7 prices. and when it cametimeto pay the bill the waiter was super disorganized and almost left us to not pay for one meal as he mixed us up with another table.

overall the hype for suwu is definitely just a hype. this resto has so much potential considering everything on the menu looks delicious and the prices are decent for what you get, it's unfortunate that there's a certain something that's holding back it's kick. the service however...i am not impressed at all. everyone who works there "fits" the laid back, hipster image but none of them know how to properly serve a table. most of them are rude and really give off the "i don't really care this is just a job" kind of vibe. there's nothing wrong with a hip, hyped place however...suwu definitely does not live up to it's full potential.

new menu, same fun vibe. at atimewhen nightlife venues on saint-laurent boulevard revolve on a monthly basis, the fun and casual suwu neighborhood bar has actually defied the odds and survived almost a full year now. not only that, but it is expanding its food offering by adding full courses to its existing bar food repertoire.

owners zach and nathan (a.k.a. saintwoods) basically wanted to give patrons the option of a full meal to round up the bar/cocktail experience. there is a clear emphasis on light, yet comforting dishes such as tartars, fresh fish, salads and pasta.

lasttimei ate a pogo, it was 2001 and i still wore braces. the pogo came from a box of frozen food and looked fancy with a bottle of ketchup. thirteen years later, my pogo, handcrafted, arrived on a wooden tray. forget heinz, it came with ranch sauce. only at suwu .

food was great. the grilled vegetables perfectly complemented the grilled avocado and their hash brown is delicious. i’ve had great feedback about their salmon tartar and the lasttimei went there, i enjoyed their bowl and their”egg in a hole” dish: their salty bread pudding was delicious. also, i believe it is extremely important to mention the fact that they are very generous with the bacon. when you ask for a side of bacon, they give you a mini bowl full of bacon…which gave them points on my side #baconlover.

ok, hold the phone....i actually got invited to a restaurant opening! me! i  mean, it's never happened to me before, so i was pretty darn excited (and still am, as you can see). anyhoot, i invited my friend v. we had quite a hardtimefinding the place. i thought it had replaced juliette et chocolat but turns out it actually took the place of one of my friends and i old breakfast spot, cafeteria. i must say i had a tiny tear when i saw that cafeteria was gone but i also must declare that i was kind of thinking that that place was passed its prime. we got there at around 8 to, you know, be fashionably late and it was full. like, full full. meh. but forget that, i got to say that i was from eating out in montreal at the door and she checked it off her list. i felt...special :)as i mentionned, it was packed in there. it was funny, i could spot my fellow bloggers who were writing notes either on their ipad or on a...pad. the place itself doesn't look anything like it did before: large plan
