laksa kingfish - it actually tasted like a laksa, thanks to the fried shallots i think, massive tick
wagyu tartare - tasted exactly like a beef rendang in a raw form, so delicious
barra larb - haven’t had larb like this before that’s for sure. salty, sweet, tangy, fresh, everything
sri lanka peppercurry- a good curry
roti - i’m malaysian, so i’m abit if a hard marker. it wasn’t as good as i had imagined.

service was quick and friendly. a huge list of alcohol to choose from.
highly recommend

we came to sum yung guys after seeing highly rated reviews. where to even start? the food was over powering in salt and spiciness there was no flavour to the dishes we ordered, the fish in the greencurrywas dry and over cooked, no flavour but spice in the paw paw salad and pork dad daew. the service was really pushy as well, our waitress kept pushing us to order more even though we were content with what we wanted. as someone with an asian background this is honestly a disgrace to “asian food”. i presume the only reason why the rating is so high is the fact that it is located in noosa and everyone there thinks that this is the “standard” that asian food should be. to top it off my partner and i both got upset stomachs from the food. if you are experiencing constipation this would be the perfect place to go to really clear your bowels. you can get perfectly cooked asian green curry, tom sum, and dad daew in brisbane for under $20 with double the portion size. i would suggest getting the basics of asian cooking right before even trying to attempt a pitiful effort at modern asian fusion.

just had the best meal of my entire life! what an experience, i have been the biggest fan of matt sinclair from masterchef for ages and to be able to finally taste his food was incredible.
we ordered the kingfish, mussels, the prawncurryand the confit duck. oh my lord the confit duck! i recommend it along with the roti! please order it. we also ordered the panacotta and that was delicious too.
service was great and the people there were wonderful. i got to meet matt at the end and he was the nicest guy. bought a t-shirt and there is no doubt i’ll be back again.
sum yung guys’ 5 star rating on zomato does not surprise me. recommend for all.

it’s good. it’s very good. january marches on and the holiday season melts into the background, but still we find time for a late lunch with family members. it’s just the four of us, but this is a perfect number when sharing dishes. a warm welcome ticks the arrival box, and then an ever so generous tasting to help us decide our wine choice absolutely blows us away. this is something you don’t get even in a fine diner, but this is sunshine beach and the line is blurred between fine and ever so good casual dining. all for the better.
now the food. crispy rice cake contains quite the kick, and the bbq pork belly is oh so more-ish. crying tiger beef ribs (off the bone) accompanied by a cucumber, snow pea and mint salad is a great combo. just beaten however by the greencurrybarramundi as consensus pick of our dishes. the redcurryduck is on a par with rik shores. one minor gripe for me would be a preference for linen napkins. difficult to get a table, but well worth it. make every effort to get here.

after reading the media and reviews, i thought i should check out the place. the venue is bustling and casual.. felt as if i was in an asian country. i had a warm welcome and was shown to our table promptly. all the seating areas were equipped with fans and the place is not fully air conditioned. the menu is made up of small, medium and large dishes. the lady taking our order was good enough to let us know what we were planning to order were excessive. food in general was delicious, strong in flavour and a bit too sweet for my palate. the confit duckcurrywas not too spicy and quite salty. some dishes were accompanied with steamed rice. the tangy papaya salad was a welcome change to cut through the saltiness and sweetness of the dishes. the papaya salad had a hint of chilli. the standout dish was the roti, rival those that were served in an asian country hawker stall. there were lot of cocktails on offer. the sparkling water was not as fizzy as those in bottles. overall nice evening with great yummy food in an bustling place.

been to this place multiple times and have not been let down once. the mussel dish for starter is amazing and the broth that goes with it is the best tasting thing i’ve had. the first time i went i had the salmoncurrywith this amazing crispy skin which was perfectly done. the second time i had a barramundicurryand a duckcurry(sharing) and they both melted in my mouth. staff are so friendly and make you feel like you are at home and the cocktails are pretty damn good. love this place and it’s definitely worth the drive from brisbane.

being an avid fan of masterchef and a massive fan of matt sinclair’s, i’ve been wanting to go to sum yung guys since it opened! it definitely did not disappoint. we started off with the the prawn toast and delicious coconut mussels. the broth was so flavour full and the prawn toast is probably the best you will ever have! for mains we had perfectly cooked salmon green curry, tender duck redcurryand papaya salad. note: when they ask if you want house roti with that, the answer is definitely yes! the roti was paper thin and oh so crispy! we tried both the desserts on the menu: sticky rice with mango sorbet and burnt honey panacotta. the burnt honey panacotta which was divine and paired with some delicious textural elements! absolutely amazing meal and would definitely recommend dining here.

this place was recommended by a local.
great street food vibe.
great location.
for food/drinks we ordered omfc cocktail (tanqueray+espresso+chocolate+orange) which was different to the usual take of espresso martini. the taste of orange overpowered the drink so it wasn't to my liking. the pina colada also wasn't smooth and tasted like excess of alcohol.
for starter i had tom kha mussels which was beautiful however felt like it's lacking some crunchy element. my partner enjoyed the sweet sour pineapple pork very much (he said it's the best he's had).
for main we both shared chicken nyonya curry. i came from malaysian background and in my opinion thecurrywas delicious however wasn't special and that it's missing some element.
the waitresses were all lovely and one of them was trying to be helpful by suggesting roti to be eaten with tom kha as it is a broth dish which i thought was odd as we don't usually dip roti in thai broth and it's usually paired with indian curry. however i appreciate the suggestion.
i feel that the restaurant was trying to be inventive and serving different asian originated cuisines in a different way which is a positive thing, however it might take a while until it matures up, until then it might feel a bit confusing.
also another tip, if you're a couple you might want to reserve counter table as it has more privacy. we booked standard table and ended up sitting next to family with kids who encroached my seat while playing with their beeping mobile.
overall, i think they have great potential however i might stick to restaurant serving traditional asian food.

updated review, extra star

two return visits after the initial one and this place goes from strength to strength

phenomenal, flawless food with highlights being spicy chicken salad and duck curry. cocktails great and service very friendly

deserves to be the highest rated restaurant in noosa.

original- four star review:
it’s hard to say what the noosa standard is, but in my mind the best of noosa restaurants sit alongside melbourne’s best.

given this is run by 2016 masterchef runner-up and the 10 5-star reviews, expectations were high, perhaps too high.

lovely set-up, great vibe, friendly staff, this place is buzzing.

chicken ribs were good, as were beef cheekcurryand lamb. really good, actually. but not great. lovely roti. coffee pannacotta was a little unpleasant.

i understand there are slim pickings for asian food in this area and this is undoubtedly the best.

what an amazing restaurant! the service is great, the food phenomenal, and the venue was inviting and trendy. unfortunately, the lighting is not great, and the venue is very loud when full. this is completely eclipsed however by the amazing food.
the restaurant has dishes under 4 classifications: small, medium and large, plus dessert. i tried the prawn and pork dumplings, which were a small dish. these were delicious, with the sauce being a highlight. the beef cheek was cooked to perfection, and it pulled apart with the slightest touch. the duckcurrywas my favourite dish by far, with an exceptional sauce and a deliciously crispy skin.
sum yung guys is such an amazing restaurant, it has now hit my top 3 sunshine coast restaurants. make sure you make a booking, because this place is super popular. and order the duck curry, you won't be disappointed!
