unique and very special.  i moved to johnson city from asheville, nc and have been missing the small, entrepreneurial restaurant crowd.  this place has the perfect blend of atmosphere and delicious pizza.  beautiful brickovenand a provenance of brickovengoodness that would be at home in berkeley.

not safe for gluten free (celiac). my husband and i tried the scratch brickovenfor the first time and unfortunately we did not have a good experience. workers were not friendly, service was slow, drinks were not cold and the pizzas were not good. i ordered the gluten free crust, he ordered the regular, neither were good pizzas. they advertise gluten free, but the pizzas are all baked in the same oven, they do not prepare the gluten free crusts in a separate pan like most other brickovenpizzerias do with their gluten free crusts, so cross contamination is certain to happen...needless to say, i wasn't aware of this until it was too late and got sick after eating there. we support small business too, but unfortunately we will not be returning.

scratch brickovenfoodworks  fits right in its setting near the campus of eastern tennessee university in johnson city. the decor is whimsical, the staff is fun and the pizza is way too good to pass up. there are different ways to order pizza at scratch. diners can select from the list of specialty pizzas, or they can choose to build their own pie. they can also have scratch staff build a pizza for them. at the counter, tell the pizza maker what ingredients they don't like, or even leave the experience completely in the hands of the kitchen. there is vegan and gluten-free pizza. the wood-fired pizzaovenputs a nice char on the medium-thick hand-tossed crust. thisovenwas built by the owners, and it also comes in handy with the bread sticks, which are essentially olive-oil-dressed pizza crust with a fresh pesto dipping sauce.  the kitchen created a veggie pizza with red and green peppers, banana peppers, kalamata olives, squash, zucchini, spinach and mushrooms. the sauce was evenly b

not really gluten-free. my friend and i like this place....except for one thing. after a diagnosis of celiac disease we thought we could still eat here since they advertise a gluten-free crust. anyone with celiacs should be aware that they contaminate the gluten-free crust in theovenwith gluten, baking it right on the stone with the rest of it. we also saw the gluten-free pizza cutter being used on regular pizza. their gluten-free is not gluten-free. if you are gluten-free due to celiac disease, beware.

adult pizza. what a wonderful place. they have a record player and you get to choose the album to play for the dining room. quirky decor makes for interesting browsing while you're waiting for your pizza.

you can order three ways, trust, limited trust and build your own. one of the friendly cooks took time to explain to us the order process. with trust you take what you get. they decide what goes on your pizza based on what they think you will like. limited trusted you pick some ingredients you have to have and eliminate to toppings you don't want. they decided to add toppings they think will make it the best pizza. you build is just what it sounds like.

we picked our topping that included andouille sausage, smoked chicken and grannie smith apples. the crust was not too thick and the sauce was good. the pizza is served in a box and cut into squares. a good pie that was worth the calories.

the kitchen is open and in view of the dinning room. the wood firedovenis outside the house so even on a the hot day we visited you could feel the heat. the dinning room is oddly shaped with nooks and crannies and a little crowded. the staff is friendly and helpful. parking is tight behind the building so find a spot on the street. if it's a nice day outside there are several uncovered picnic tables outside. boyb and enjoy the pizza.

can't wait to go back. scratch brickovenspecializes in pizza and artisan bread. i'm not usually so excited about pizza, but this stuff is amazingly good. fresh ingredients, quality dough, and great variety of toppings. i also love the ambience. it's quirky and low-key. i love that they offer interesting alternatives to your average menu- i had orangina with the pizza and chess pie for dessert. you can pick out records to play while you're eating, and the restaurant is byob as well- the even have a fridge to store your drinks.

wow!! check it out asap!. i must say that i was totally surprised by the quality of the pizza at the brick oven. this was probably the freshest and most interesting ingredients that i have ever had on a pizza. this place has an unbelievable list of ingredients that will leave you wanting to try more the next time. i really enjoy their "green curry" based pizza. it is probably the best pizza i have ever partaken in. the atmosphere is extremely laid back and you can byob which can save money if you like to indulge in adult beverages. the brickovenwhich is located in the back of the structure is what makes everything better. i cannot believe i have not tried this restaurant until now. the scratch brickovenhas made it into my top 5 restaurants in the tri-cities area. if you want a fun laid back experience with great fresh pizza look no further that the scratch brick oven! try it and you won't regret it! oh yeah the price is extremely reasonable as well.

a real wood fired brick oven. they serve some remarkably good pizza, and they are usually very busy. the brickovenwill give you a great "charred bottom" pizza, and the toppings selection is always fresh.

if you have to wait to pick up your pizza, there is usually a pizza for you to have a piece of, on the house. this gives you a chance to try toppings you might not get otherwise. look for the little table to the right of the cash register, across from the phonograph.

the staff is very friendly, and the atmosphere is retro but clean. they also have some great baked desserts, and a few tasty sandwiches. there is a small parking lot, and usually lots of parking on the street.
