my first few experiences were great. however, i am afraid this might be one of those (sad) instances where.....a great place goes downhill, until their loyal customers disappear, leaving only a memory of what once was great....simply gone to pot! no pun intended. i usually get my pizza to go (order plenty time ahead as wait time can be ridiculous). atmosphere is more for young adults, too hipster for me. the staff are very laid back and relaxed.... good and bad. if you are in a hurry and they are behind and you ordered an hour before, told 20-30 minute wait (nudge, nudge, cough cough :), they remain laid back & relaxed without offering the slightest bit of empathy. now the pizza! i used toorderthe "trust" pizza. the pizza artisans used to be pretty reliable. although, i personally believe they're creativity has been stifled. the last two trust's were a small step above mom attempting pizza hut. be adventurous on menu, orderplenty ahead and give it a try. maybe they will/have read the reviews and put the brakes on their swirling before they are flushed.

scratch brick oven foodworks  fits right in its setting near the campus of eastern tennessee university in johnson city. the decor is whimsical, the staff is fun and the pizza is way too good to pass up. there are different ways toorderpizza at scratch. diners can select from the list of specialty pizzas, or they can choose to build their own pie. they can also have scratch staff build a pizza for them. at the counter, tell the pizza maker what ingredients they don't like, or even leave the experience completely in the hands of the kitchen. there is vegan and gluten-free pizza. the wood-fired pizza oven puts a nice char on the medium-thick hand-tossed crust. this oven was built by the owners, and it also comes in handy with the bread sticks, which are essentially olive-oil-dressed pizza crust with a fresh pesto dipping sauce.  the kitchen created a veggie pizza with red and green peppers, banana peppers, kalamata olives, squash, zucchini, spinach and mushrooms. the sauce was evenly b

won't go back!!!. the pizza is average.
the concept is bohemian and cool. i felt like i was in berkley ca.
however, there are new owners and a new attitude. the staff was snotty at best. read the signs, give us theorderand don't bother us.
the whole vinyl thing has a great feel to it. however, i played an album and a kid took it off in the middle of the first song. i told the kid i played the album and a bitchy staffer yelled across the room, "they can change it".
well bitch, you can let them change it all you want because you won't ever see me again. i paid $50 for two pizzas and won't put up with that kind of customer service especially for average pizza.

dont get it delivered, go there and enjoy it. if you want the authentic scratch experience go there after a long hike on the at, try to work up a huge hunger, and thirst. on your way there pick up a bottle of wine, or a pack of beer. if youorderin you don't need to wait too long, i usually wait about 20 minutes, like any other joint. just chill, jam out, and gulp down some refreshments. the pizza will come out piping hot. this is not a delivery joint, so don't expect there delivery style to be as good. just go there dude!

scratch brick is raved about for quality and taste. we had some "stopover" friends for florida. we ordered from scratch brick through some service they are connected to on the internet. the menu was limited but we did get what all felt inclined to eat. after waiting for over an hour, the delivery came--cold, burnt pizza crust and what was not burnt was soggy. our guests insisted on paying, as we had really bragged about scratch. i think it was the most dissatisfied we've ever been with how a pizza is cooked and delivered. this happened over a year ago and we're still "burnt" from this episode. and, ourorderwas over $50 so not cheap. somebody needs to convince me to try again and perhaps write a more favorable review. we should have called and sent it back but not so easy on a delivery. we were starving.

success is going to their head, and away from service.... i called in anorderfor a trust pizza, and i was told it would be ready in 30 minutes. i arrived 35 minutes later and, after an additional 30 minute wait, finally got my order. i would have at least thought that i would get an apology for my wait when i paid, but nose-ring girl just walked away silent, even after i said "thank you"!

the next time i call in an order, the least you could do is tell me the truth...that is, if there really is a next time! i guess i'm not hipster enough...

adult pizza. what a wonderful place. they have a record player and you get to choose the album to play for the dining room. quirky decor makes for interesting browsing while you're waiting for your pizza.

you canorderthree ways, trust, limited trust and build your own. one of the friendly cooks took time to explain to us theorderprocess. with trust you take what you get. they decide what goes on your pizza based on what they think you will like. limited trusted you pick some ingredients you have to have and eliminate to toppings you don't want. they decided to add toppings they think will make it the best pizza. you build is just what it sounds like.

we picked our topping that included andouille sausage, smoked chicken and grannie smith apples. the crust was not too thick and the sauce was good. the pizza is served in a box and cut into squares. a good pie that was worth the calories.

the kitchen is open and in view of the dinning room. the wood fired oven is outside the house so even on a the hot day we visited you could feel the heat. the dinning room is oddly shaped with nooks and crannies and a little crowded. the staff is friendly and helpful. parking is tight behind the building so find a spot on the street. if it's a nice day outside there are several uncovered picnic tables outside. boyb and enjoy the pizza.

scratchin' your head!. stopped in to this spot on the urbanspoon review.
very bizzare and interesting concept. be prepared to park on the street and walk a few feet. don't even try to park behind the shop, pretty dicey proposition.

the menu: one size pie, any and all toppings, one price!

the concept was quickly explained by the dread locked, rasta styled and friendly staff. aorderof their pesto bread sticks were excellent with a fantastic homemade marinara dipping sauce. ice cold soda's in bottles or byob.
theordersheet has a option for a "trust" or "limited trust" option where you let the pie maker choose the toppings! a little too much trust for my liking, but the locals we talked to said it always seems to work out.

the dining room is a bit choppy and the rasta music (an old lp player in the main dining room) in our corner was blaring. a quick word with the staff and they toned it down.
overall, very good pie!
i am glad we got there before the saturday night push. because of the wood oven, the pies were stacked on hold in the "outdoor, screened in patio" waiting for a turn in the oven. it could be quite a wait.
