girls night out in strathfield. my friends thought i was being random but i had a plan. it involved a trip down parramatte rd. it involved knafeh. first stop was strathfield sports club. this is the classic aussie club with a twist. burly bouncer on the door signing people in, tick. naff carpet, formica tables and tv screens everywhere, tick. hole in the wall serving cheap filling meals, tick. but this is where the twist comes in, as those cheap huge meals are served by red pepper bistro, purveyor extraordinaire of korean fried chicken and other korean food goodness. walking across the club, our eyes grew round as saucers as we looked at the mountains of food on the tables. heaped platters of kfc on one, friends gathered around a bubbling hot pot at another.  trying the kfc was obligatory so we ordered a plate of the boneless one with spicy chilli sauce, a seafood pancake and glass noodles with vegetables. i have to say that it was amongst the best korean food i've ever eaten (and that includes a week eating my way through seoul under the eager tutelage of korean colleagues). the glass noodles were perfectly cooked and had a gorgeous smoky flavour, the kfc was juicy and tender with a really tasty sauce (fire alert: hot hot hot) and the seafood pancake was bursting with all sorts of seafood and super delicious. while the decor is completely basic, there was no lack of atmosphere, which was provided by the many happy diners caught up in an eating frenzy. awesome place..

i used to come here because they have nice chicken. but i will not ever come back anymore. because their service is bad.

they have an outdoor area so i asked one of the girls whether it was ok to sit outside with my puppy. she said yes it was ok.

so i brought my puppy and i left my puppy with my friends. i was gonna order some foods. then a guy came and told me that i was not allowed to sit there with my puppy. i told him that the girl allowed me to sit there with my puppy. he said that the girl did not understand anything. so why would you employ someone who does not know anything? i think this guy is the one who does not know anything. he has never been to any outdoor restaurant in sydney.

you have an outdoor area so why am i not allowed to bring puppy? i have been to many restaurants in sydney. they do not have problems if i bring my puppy as long as i sit outdoor.

my korean fried chicken obsessed friend who ate kilos of fried chicken in korea with me suggested checking out red pepper bistro. i quickly did a search on my fellow bloggers and it seemed they all agreed that red pepper bistro is the place to be for korean fried chicken. the 4.2/5 zomato rating also speaks volumes.

korean fried chicken champion of strathfield. their sister restaurant sparrows mill in the city serves a similar menu. this time we tried out some non fried chicken items and was especially impressed with the japchae. little did i know their patbingsu is superb, one of the better ones i've tried in sydney. try the one with roasted soybean powder (basically kinako), will be the perfect refreshment on a warm day.

i loooooove fried chicken and have experienced amazing fried chicken in korea. however in sydney i've been disappointed most times.

the seafood pancake is well priced and has enough seafood to pancake ratio.
the chicken strips are still succulent and crispy and the spring onion with the wasabi add a good kick to the flavours.
the bulgogi casserole also hit the spot as we sat outside during last few nights of winter.
i do have to say the incredible gangjung was way too sweet for me and the taste was not pleasant so i would steer away from that flavour if you just want good solid fried chicken.

during all those busy times, one of the dishes that has got me craving for more has been korean fried chicken. recently, one of my friends made a visit to sydney for his belated birthday celebrations where we all celebrated at strathfield sports club's red pepper bistro. the location was actually very hard to find with so many of us getting lost trying to find this unassuming location. while there was no signage for red pepper, the easy way to find the strathfield sports club was the hidden small brick building next to the soccer field and tennis court if you are coming from the station. the inside venue was similar to a community hall where you grab the first avail table for yourself but don't let that deter you. there's a dozen different flavours of fried chicken to try, which was perfect for a group of twenty hungry people.

always enjoyed eating kfc (korean fried chicken). best to go in a big group so you can try different ones. our favourite would be the snow cheese. parking can be quite a pain as there is usually a few groups playing soccer or tennis.

fried chicken lovers!!!! well kfc (korean fried chicken)this little sporting club has the best caterer for fried chicken, korean based area the korean themselves rate this place top 5 kfc in sydney. the variety of sauces or batter that goes with the chicken tends to everyone's personal preference in flavours. ie: sweet and spicy, sweet, soy, spicy and more.i always get the boneless spicy and the sweet & spicy drumsticks, and beef kimchi soup. not only it provides fried chicken it also has other korean dishes, like noodles, rice, soups and kbbq.

i had high expectations based on the numerous reviews i read online. as i never had korean chicken with beer before, i was intrigued on the flavours and how it will taste well with beer. this place is actually located within the sports club at strathfield so drinks at the pub weren’t pricey (if you’re wondering). of course, red pepper is a korean-owned restaurant and there were a lot of koreans coming in and eating their food. thus, i anticipated the food should be great and authentic.

good taste of chicken,

red pepper = incredible chicken 'the sparrow mill' at liverpool street, cbd.

we wait for our food for almost 1hour
too bad, a good taste chicken made in the small kitchen.

tried the seafood pancakes, is thicker than usual, so its not really crispy

we tried the sweet and spicy chicken. for me, personally, the sauces is too sweet and makes your throat sick af. i think the original or the soy sauce would be nicer than this sweet and spicy.

the stir beef just excellent 👌👌👌

lots of side dishes💕

overall, this restaurant is recommended, but the place is too small, located inside one pub in stratfield and you have to bring your id to get in.

no soul. why am i here? great korean chicken in a souless and unimaginative sports club when there are great owner run korean eateries with soul operating nearby.. best for sports minded people or gamblers. . but that's only my opinion

8/4/2015 0 comments   on the hunt for a kfc fix (not the fast food, but korean fried chicken), my friends and i ventured to strathfield sports club where red pepper resides.  the place resembles a typical sports club - keno machines, a tab counter and giant tvs showing football games. what is different is their extensive kfc menu. looking around the packed restaurant, every table had at least one plate of kfc on their table. with 6 of us, we decided to order nothing but fried chicken in order to try as many flavours as possible. the chicken was really juicy with a crunchy skin.  there were a few pieces that were a bit boney but still great value.  first up was the hot and spicy gangjung . it was hot and spicy indeed. the first few bites were pretty mild but then the heat really kicks in.  hot and spicy gangjung (half) $17 i preferred the  sweet and spicy chicken  to the hot and spicy - the succulent pieces of chicken were very flavoursome covered in a sticky glaze. sweet and spicy chicken (half) $18 the  spring onion chicken  was my favourite. i loved the dressing which was predominantly soy sauce with a tinge of wasabi, and the ample amounts of spring onion added some freshness to the dish.  spring onion chicken (half) $18 the most intriguing kfc was the  snow cheese chicken , crispy skinned chicken coated in parmesan cheese powder. it definitely is not a flavour combination i would have thought of but somehow it works.  snow cheese chicken (half) $18 i'd recommend coming with your friends so you can try more types of kfc. i am keen to come back and try the rest of their menu as well, as some of the noodle dishes and stews looked amazing.

super spicy chicken. located inside the strathfield sports club this kfc aka korean fried chicken styled restaurant has all you need when it comes to chicken!

we got here around 6pm and there were only a few people, however, by 6.45pm all the tables were taken. so you need to get in early to snag a table or if not come a bit later.

you order your food at the counter and it will be brought out to you when its ready. drinks are cheap as its a sports club so similar to rsl prices.

we ordered 3 variations of fried chicken and they were all finger-licking good! the super spicy chicken was waayyyyyyyy spicy i could only eat one (sad face, i am only starting to rebuild my chilli game).

you can get a super pure blonde jug for $19!

overall, great first time visit and reasonable prices, chicken sizes either come in half or whole.

street parking is available although limited, so get there early!

woo kfc time! no, not your red and white fast food chain, but korean fried chicken! and what better place to have it then at sydney’s own little korean town, strathfield. recommended by a number of people, i was told there were two things i had to try here – their flavoured, saucy fried chicken and their shaved milk dessert. yes please!!

so what is with koreans making better chicken than the colonel.

my fiancee has been raving about this joint since she last tried it and i finally get to see what the fuss is all about. the restaurant is set in a sports club/bar venue surrounded by caged soccer fields and tennis courts. i had my doubts about the location but i'm always comforted when you walk in and majority of diners are korean.

the first dish was gangjung which is described as a korean rice and peanut cookie that is sweet and crispy, a flavour profile that is then apparently applied to their fried chicken. it's a combination of sweet and salty and just plain messy and sticky to eat. they never seem to supply enough serviettes to compliment messy foods. it comes with fried rice cake sticks on the side which isn't as pleasant as their normal rice cake drenched in chilli sauce.

our second choice for the night was just fried chicken with a side order of mustard sauce. i love the mustard sauce as it reminded me of maccas. the crunch is fantastic, it felt bad for you but i just couldn't stop eating. i love how neither choices left my chicken dry, or overly soaked in oil.

i didn't even bother ordering any rice to eat this with. just paired it up with an ice cold beer, great company and it was perfect. they even have bulmers by the bottle for only $7. shame that the choices on tap were very limited.

i might be biased but i just love chicken... and to find a place that makes it great is such a gem. will definitely be back next time with the fiancee to chow down the hot and spicy option.
