pole position. polperro is a charming fishing village in cornwall and an equally picturesque winery on the mornington peninsula. the latter is a lot easier to get to and now boasts accommodation as well as a restaurant, cellar door (polperro & even keel labels) & gorgeous grounds with the option of catered picnics in romantic wicker baskets.
i was the fortunate guest of a friend with a generous family. they had given her a big voucher to spend at polperro to celebrate a big birthday. with a 6pm booking at dinner, we made our way to polperro for a lazy afternoon tasting before 5pm, followed by casual drinks on the terrace overlooking the gum trees, vineyard and dam. the food is really good - the charcuterie plate, kingfish ceviche & cheese plate were all wonderful. the desserts were less interesting to me but my friend enjoyed hers - a deconstructed combination of flavours including white chocolate, matcha & cocoa nibs. the wine list traverses more than just the estate's own bottles, with an excellent range reasonably priced.
service was more patchy - possibly due to the relatively young floor staff and large numbers of guests. we spent the pleasurable hour between 5pm & 6pm looking over the stunning scenery having ordered a bottle of even keel sparkling. but each time we were asked for more drinks, and indicated we had a bottle on the go, the staff walked off rather than find said bottle and refill our glasses. after the third time, we explicit asked for more wine to be poured, which seems an unnecessary requirement as a diner.
at dinner, we almost received another table's meals, and one dish we ordered was mistaken for another, but replaced quickly. we had plenty to eat so missing out on bread at the start of the meal wasn't a major issue but was another lapse. in a more memorable experience, l loved the friendly and energetic winery dog!
