fresh!. i've enjoyed eating at pepe's with it's relaxed atmosphere for over 20 years now and while some things about the restaurant have changed (it's in the old liberty d's location instead of across the alley from sugar's thank you very much), emilio's philosophy about pepe's, food and service has not. (several years ago he told me, "it's not gourmet, it's good quality food, served fast."). i believe the chief cook has been there since the very beginning, the food is not smothered with cheese, the chips andsalsaaren't free and the ingredients put into the food have flavor that tastes fresh, not greasy. my personal fave is the beef quesadilla, closely followed by the beef corn mula. i love the fresh tomatilla sauce and cilantro. my son, whose choice is primarily influenced by quantity, goes for the super nachos but the girls like the burritos or ecnhiladas. the boss usually tries one of the daily specials or the spicy tortilla soup with avocado slices (it's sensational on a cold day).
jeff, the bartender, has been at pepe's for several years and is as good as there is, in norman. several tvs make for easy watching of a game as long as it's not a home game day.
i've eaten at just about every restaurant, that's been open for more than a couple of years, in norman and pepe's is always clean, always fresh, and the most consistently good food at a very affordable price i have found.
