a hidden gem. bump into this one and it's an excellent restaurant. we sit outdoor for the sun and view. we order a few dishes. oysters to start, not particularlygoodmaybe due to non-oyster season. mussels in pot, can't stop with those creamy sauce. fish of today, dorado my always favourite. crayfish, i am not a fan of such but this one is really delicious.

what a supremely underwhelming experience. cool venue and location, but if the food isn'tgoodthen don't bother to serve it, or tell me that the dish is unavailable. i got yesterday's overcooked, dry bobotie. the bay leaves were so dry i thought it might have been shell fish initially. the only dish reaching palatable status at our table was the hake and chips. never again!

overall i love ons huise, and it's really upsetting that such a lovely place with a menu full of potential can be so mediocre. we have had some really nice meals here, but also some that are underwhelming, one being this past week. after ordering the calamari (something we have enjoyed before) we ended up with what looked like calamari steaks cut up, sprinkled with herbs and lacking any sort of sauce (yoh, it was dry). the two platters other diners at our table ordered were deep fried (we did not know if there was an option to have anything grilled instead) and oily, making it hard to eat the whole meal as there was just so much batter on everything.

on a positive note, the venue is one of my favourites (with a cracking view), the staff are some of the friendliest around and their cocktails are so darn delicious it's hard to stick to having just one.

on other occasions when we have visited we have tried the likes of the chicken and mushroom pie, theirgoodol' bobotie, their mussle pot and a few other things. all of which were nice and served in large portions. i just feel very underwhelmed when eating here and i feel like overall the food could be a little better.

for valentine day my bf booked at ons huisie as it's right by the beach, you can have a drink and watch the sun set, etc.

upon arrival we took a seat outside as we wanted to have a drink first and watch the sunset, service wasgoodto start off with. we moved inside and we were seated at a little awkward table right by the kitchen and a window facing an ice cream machine where during the course of the night one of the ladies was standing picking her nose, obviously not realizing the customers can see her.

we ordered a starter and this arrived quite quickly. the oysters were just served on a plate of greens, not on ice. the calamari starter was chewy, but portion size was big enough for a starter.

as the starter was not the best, i opted to order the rump steak which i requested to be well done. now i know this is frowned upon, but when my food arrived it was still bloody... not close to well done. i politely asked the waiter to please ask them to put it on for another 2 minutes.

by the time my food arrived 15minutes later my partners food was done and he now awkwardly had to wait for me. hading ordered the rump steak himself he only received chips with his meal and not the vegetable parcel as per the menu. when he enquired about this the waiter just shook his head and walked to the kitchen, returning with a side plate of the food which they forgot to plate.

when i eventually started eating, my chips were under done, my steak then tasted like dishwashing liquid. i didn't have much of my food and i couldn't stomach the meal. we left shortly after, paid the bill and still honored the 10% tip.

advise to management, don't only engage with your customers when you seat them. come check how they are doing during the course of their meal. don't stand in the kitchen area shouting at your staff when your customers can see and hear you. don't allow your staff to throw tantrums when they are having a disagreement with their colleagues and don't allow your waiters to pick and choose which tables they would like to serve!

this venue is very beautiful and the service is friendly. the portions are huge - my mom and i shared the hake and calamari combo and the photo is of my half of the portion! the hake was really reallygoodbut the calamari could have been crispier. my brother really enjoyed his nachos. i had a chai latte which unfortunately wasn't great but the venue and atmosphere makes this place great and i'll definitely return.

we had breakfast at ons huisie with such a beautiful view. the food was a bit of a let down where i ordered a boerewors omelette that had one small piece of boerewors in it and the entire omelette was watery. the rest of the food wasgoodbut bit of a let down for me.

you go there for the atmosphere, the kids' area, the very kind service. less for the creamy potjie with mix of sea foods. the fish n' chips isgoodalthough fries are undercooked.
i would advise this with family friends with kids willing to have a nice breeze and view on the sea (avoid the inside areas).

i'm so keen to go back to 'ons huisie'. its a really popular place and they are always buzzing.

of course its in the best spot... you have the view of the ocean and you can smell and feel the sea breeze.

i went there for a breakfast, a verygoodtime to go and the meal was delicious. service is great!

going for a stroll along the beach after your meal rounds it off nicely :)

no no no, avoid avoid. at least don't go there for dinner. perhaps this is a better little lunch spot instead. the setting is incredible and the view is amazing, and although the service is pretty decent, the dining experience is sabotaging this beautiful restaurant.

i went with my mother and a friend and here's a summary of what we had:

starters:
mussel starter - burnt (definitely not "smoked" as the menu suggests).
fish cakes - really not tasty, dry, made with questionable ingredients and served with shop-bought sauces.
calamari starter - decent.

mains
fish & chips - light, crispy batter but zero flavour. fish needed a lot of seasoning. factory chips, not hand cut. no lemon wedges on the plate. overall just average.

prawns - terrible presentation. everything slapped down on a plate. the prawns were okay - edible but not wow. served next to dry, stale rice and served with really horrible chunky vegetables. compared to almost every other seafood restaurant this meal is well below average.

chicken pie - the actual pie was fair but the salad was wilted and warm. woolworths pies are nicer.

overall everything just tasted bland and incredibly average. perhaps i have high standards, but to me it's a pity when such a lovely spot gets it so wrong. absolutely nothing here is made with care and attention. notgoodvalue for money either.

i get the sense that they use shortcuts. expect a lot of processed, shop-bought ingredients for sauces, dressings and sides (like a restaurant chain would do), instead of serving beautifully crafted hand made things. its a travesty.

management did apologise profusely after i complained, and then offered us stale carrot cake for free. it's hilarious.

avoid.

ons huisie always brings back childhood memories of playing on the beach, drinking milkshakes and having agoodtime. since i live walking distance from this cute little beachside restaurant, it's always been a popular choice for a quick lunch with friends or sundowners on a windless evening.

i've never had a disappointing experience. in fact, i'm quite surprised by the quality of their cocktails, as they don't strike me as being the go-to place for those sort of drinks. however, i like their cocktails much more than blue peter's. and the vibe on the patio is just so relaxing - totally laid back and carefree. but the service is still on par - i've never had to wait too long for my order. recently, me and my better half went for sundowners on a beautiful spring evening, watching the sun set over the beautiful atlantic while sipping on a long island ice tea and a strawberry daiquiri. we weren't that hungry, so we ordered the woppertal snack basket, which consisted of fries, samosas, vegetable spring rolls, potato bites and beef rissoles. served with sweet chili and chili mayo dipping sauces, this made for the perfect basket of snacks to munch on while enjoying our drinks.

on another occasion, i was coming home late and got myself takeaways from ons huisie, since it was so close by. i ordered the line fish, which was dorado on this particular day. i don't usually like dorado because of its meaty taste and thick fillet, but this time round i was very impressed. i absolutely loved the herb crust and crispy skin, perfectly complimented by some of the best herbed mash i've ever had (and i'm not a big fan of mash). moreover, the vegetables were delicious - cooked to perfection, sweet and tasty.

the only thing left for me to experience is their legendary breakfast! and i will definitely be returning to experience this!

this restaurant is truly a hidden gem. if you're ever looking for a consistentlygoodquality place to go enjoy the blouberg beachfront, ons huisie is the place to go!

top tips: arrive early for dinner to enjoy sundowners and avoid crowds. make a booking if you plan to have breakfast there on a sunday as they're usually packed! you can still come an enjoy sundowners on cold winter nights - they've recently built another "stoep" inside with a fireplace, a bar and live sport screening.
