lone star taqueria

amazing food, killer restaurant. going to lone star is a great experience- fast service, friendly employees, insane fish tacos, a salsa bar with whatever you might want to dress up your food, all within a great hole-in-the-wall place to get an authentic mexican bite. just ask guy fieri...

no point. i don't get the hype. granted, i've tried it only once, but it just wasn't anything special.

i tried a fish taco, a shrimp taco and a "carnitas" taco. the fish taco, which i've heard is fantastic, was surprisingly bland. hardly any flavor whatsoever. plus, i know the grilled fish is healthier, but i just prefer the baja-style, battered-and-deep-fried fish tacos.

the shrimp taco was quite good. the shrimp were simply sauteed, and had a nice garlicky flavor. i would eat this again.

the carnitas taco was also good, but it wasn't carnitas, at least not what i think of as carnitas. yes, i know there are many types of carnitas, but this was quickly sauteed pork loin, rather than pork shoulder slowly braised, then crisp-fried in the rendered fat. nothing wrong with the pork loin - again, healthier - but not what i prefer.

the salsa verde has to be the worst i've ever tasted. it was thin, watery and cloyingly sweet, yet remarkably tasteless. it tasted like they just blended up canned tomatillos in their liquid, and added sugar and a bit of heat. inexcusably lazy.

the place was very crowded and expensive for what it is. not someplace i'd go more than a few blocks out of my way for, otherwise, i'd have to pass at least a handful of better taqueria to get there, and what's the point of that?

the food is fresh, delicious, prices are very reasonable, service is fast. the parking lot is small and very limited. i would not suggest coming here during busy lunch hours, you will not find a place to park or sit. they do have a drive through though!

awesome food! but.... i love lone star! i have been going there for a couple years now, with my wife. a couple weeks ago some family came in town from az. my brother asked me "where do people in slc go for some good grub?" i automatically thought of lone star. we went and there were 6 of us total. since we were all together i asked if we could be all on the same order. they said "hey, we do things our way. we'll give separate numbers out. its hard to get everything out at the same time". i totally understand. so we had two separate order numbers. when our food came out (15 minutes apart) they had gotten everything wrong. everyone at the table was understanding, but the servers gave us a huge attitude about it. it really ruined our dining experience. i will continue to sing their praise, but if you go there don't go as a large group or you will be disappointed! for that my score is 3/5

best fish tacos in slc!. it is so hard finding a decent-tasting mexican restaurant. you either get cheap, greasy crap or you get bland, flat, boring meals. lone star saved my opinion of vibrant mexican food in utah! okay, it may not be entirely authentic, but the fish tacos are actually made with fresh fish! i live down the street and this place is always busy! i'm telling you, if you enjoy a good fish taco, this place is a must-try!

best tacos and burritos in the valley!. lone star is a funky little mexican joint. i love the fish burritos and the crema sauce that comes with them. everything is good. it can get kind of crowded as there isn't a ton of indoor seating. they do have a nice outdoor patio as well. it's also not taco-bell cheap, you know? you are paying for really good food so the price reflects that.

i'm sitting at lonestar right now. i just had my adovada burrito with roasted jalapenos and the "christmas in a cup" ice tea. i feel like i'm on top of the world. if i leave town i dream about lonestar... its the best food in the whole world. bar none. que rrrrrica! que savor! que fresco!!! viva lonestar!!!!!

best burrito in townh. we absolutely love lone star! it is the best mexican food you can find...tacos are phenomenal, burritos are delicious and the chips and salsa are a perfect compliment to an amazing meal! recommend it to all-

i'm from southern california, which has the most fantastic mexican food. lone stars fish taco is by far the best i have had. everything else, however, needs improvement. not saying it's terrible, but just that it has promise. my husband got the steak burrito, and i got the chicken. it was like everything under the kitchen sink was thrown in, making it hard to really even taste the meat, beans, and rice that are typical for mexican burritos. my husband is all about the salsa, and thankfully they had a salsa bar, but there hottest stuff just couldn't compare to what he's tried at home. certainly worth a stop, because it's the most authentic you'll find in utah, and def get the fish tacos, but other than that don't plan on it being better than southern california.

deserving of it's fame. anyone who doesn't like this place, simply doesn't understand how hard it is to start a new concept, gain recognition, and then adjust to the large volumes of business while still trying to stay true to your roots and original goals.
this place is great, notbecause they serve food you can't get anywhere else, but because they do great tacos, consistently in a unique environment, i've enjoyed every visit here. never had my mind blown, but have consistently enjoyed every minute i was there. that's tough to make a place like that

i love this place! better than the fish tacos you can get on the west coast at places like wahoos. just get there early or you won't get a parking spot or a table.

great fish tacos. i love how they transformed an old gas station into what has become one of slc's busiest taquerias. counter service there is welcoming and friendly.
fish tacos are truly great! great that is, when they don't dish out salmon or catfish... if they do, try the shrimp tacos instead!

top 5 favorite restaurants in slc. i take all of my out-of-towner visitors here, and many of my in-town friends that haven't branched out yet. i love the tacos, but the burritos are also spectacular. my personal favorite is the carne adovada, rich flavor and pretty spicy (for a lightweight like me) - make sure to pair it with the salsa they give you.the pollo asado and carne asada are also phenomenal. the burritos are enormous, and the half size is plenty for me, although i stick with the tacos most of the time.
the drive-thru is a heaven-send after dropping my son off at school and my daughter has fallen asleep in the back. the staff is always happy, cheerful, and quick, and the clientele make me wish i was a ski bum. the whole place has a laid back attitude, but the food is always reliable and better than most sit down joints.
