looked promising...until the main courses arrived. it highly pains me to write this as i rarely have to complain about the amazing eats in montreal. my friends booked a reservation for lawrence yesterday in the afternoon for 9:30 pm. we arrive there and were very pleased with the ambiance of the place. most importantly, we were starved. we ordered appetizers which, to be honest, were delicious and fresh. we had oysters that were amazing, beef tartar that was so fresh and perfectly spiced, smoked mackerel with celery root that was so tasty and a pig cheek that was quite loved as well. now onto the main courses, we weren't very adventurous and three of us ordered the roasted veal with black cabbage and potatoes and the other three the striped bass (i may have the fish wrong but that part was delicious) risotto with cherry tomatoes.
the veal was bland, the potatoes were overly salty and it felt like a meal i can whip out at home and not spend 29$ at a restaurant on. the risotto was overcooked and soaked in liquid although the fish was good, granted. for 30$, you do not expect a small bowl of a messy overcooked liquid risotto. not one person was pleased with their choice. when the waitress came to pick up the dishes, she did not bother even asking how everything was which annoyed a few of us.
onto the dessert. as much as we should have taken the bad main courses as a sign to give up and get the bill and finish our drinks, we were still hopeful based on the delicious appetizers and the appealing menu choice of sweets. we got the chocolate mousse, the queen elizabeth cake with bourbon ice cream and the apple tart tatin.
and then i took a bite out of the chocolate mousse. which was basically an unsweetened dark chocolate heavy cake! the horror! with a sour tasting cream dollop on top. the apple tart was like a warmed up pastry that was the portion for a child. the queen elizabeth cake was eaten all of up which makes me believe it must have been good.
oh and then they forgot my cappuccino.
the raving reviews for brunch i will believe. for dinner, i would avoid this place. after getting a hefty bill, we left discussing about what a disappointment that was.
restaurant should rethink menu and priorities to check up with customers. although, theserviceitself was great, the waitress was overall lovely and our water was always filled.
oh well. onto the next!
