very disappointed. on this visit to memphis i skipped the obvious italian and bbq restaurants and decided to try the kooky canuck based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews here (and because i haven't had real poutine since a visit to canada several years ago).
i ended up spending close to $40 for some poutine, two entrées and two drinks. the food quality would have been acceptable at a $20 price point, but there was no flair or any redeeming qualities to elevate the food over bog-standard, pre-made sysco fare.
the poutine was pretty good, with springy cheese curds, but the fries were soggy and the gravy was clearly the same stuff you'd find in a jar at the grocery store. and the macaroni and cheese wasn't made with real cheese -- it was clearly a boxed product. if this is a play on the old barenaked ladies song, "if i had a million dollars" -- which proclaims that new canadian millionaires would still eat kraft dinner, i'll admit that it's kind of funny. but i don't really enjoy paying for boxed macaroni and cheese.
i am not a picky reviewer and have relied on urbanspoon countless times in the past. but this is the first time i've been spurred to write a review since what i read here is so far out of line with what i experienced at the restaurant.
all that said, the staff working there is excellent, efficient and very friendly and the location is convenient -- the food just isn't up to par.
