next time you’re in downtown memphis, the burger of choice may very well be the four-pounder at kooky canuck on 2nd street, just around the corner from the main entrance to the peabody hotel. finish the four-pounder in 60 minutes — or bring a friend and polish off a six-pounder — and you’ll find yourself not just full, but famous, with your picture hung on the canuck’s wall of fame. if your appetite isn’t quite that big, their regular burgers measure up to a measly half-pound. while you’re waiting for yours, the canuck has a few appetizers that you will find interesting: the poutine, a dish of hand-cut fries mixed with white cheddar cheese curds and smothered in tasty brown gravy, differs from the french canadian original only in its size, which is big enough to mush a dog sled all the way from quebec to vancouver. the fried green tomatoes are as good as you’ll find anywhere, although they

great late night and lunch place. ashley is a great bartender and shawn is a great owner. they have everything from fried cheese logs to lettuce wrapped burgers if you don't eat bread! a huge range of canadian whiskeys and well as great draft beer. 34 oz mugs are a great night. hope this place is around for a long time.

jeff and i ate here on a saturday with some friends who live in memphis.  our friends chose this restaurant for us because they follow this blog and know the type of food that we like to eat.  they did an excellent job in their selection of this restaurant.  man vs. food filmed a show here when the restaurant was called big foot lodge. the name had to be changed due to a lawsuit.  adam took what was then called the the sasquatch challenge.  it is now called the kookamonga challenge.  the challenge is eating a four pound burger in 60 minutes. adam lost. we started our meal with an appetizer.  we chose the pick 3 kooky combo. our three were the fried pickles, buffalo tenders and bbq egg rolls.  the appetizer was delicious. bbq egg rolls, fried pickles and buffalo tenders i chose the yonge street burger.  it has two burgers, american cheese, grilled onions and mushrooms and bacon along with their signature sauce.  the burger was delicious.  i loved the signature sauce as well as the grill

won't go back!. i had previously been just for appetizers with a friend, and tonight decided to bring my family since we were staying in a hotel just down the street. we waited 45 minutes for our food, and it was not even busy on a tuesday. our server did not come back to check on us after we got our food. my husband could not eat his prime rib sandwich due to it being overcooked and gristly. we had to flag down the server for our check after being finished eating for at least 10 minutes. he saw that over half my husband's food was still on his plate and asked if we wanted a to go box. of course we said no since it sucked, and he didn't even think to ask how it was. part of tonight's bad experience was due to poor service, but the server isn't to blame for the slow and not so great food. the fried items we got were ok (except my daughter thought her chicken tasted like fish lol), and the sweet potato fries were wonderful. it doesn't take much skill to fry food. that's an hour and a half of my life i can't have back.

miserable. i have eaten here on several occasions and never particularly cared for the food or service. but it is a family friendly restaurant downtown (which is hard to come by unless you want hueys) and i was with my husband and son. we got there at 5:30 on a thursday night, expecting be out of there in plenty of time to spare to make the redbirds game at 7:05.
we were seated immediately, the server came within a few minutes and took our drink order. we went ahead and ordered the poutine cheese fries. the cheese fries were out in less than 2-3 minutes. they tasted good, it was not a very large portion, which was ok for the 3 of us. we gave our entree order to the waiter at 5:45. my husband ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich with turnip greens, i ordered the memphis "best" burger with blue cheese mashed potatoes, and my son ordered the kids hotdog with green beans. so around 6 pm, the waiter (who never told us his name) says it "should be done in just a few minutes". 6:10.. 6:20... 6:30.. no food. so he comes back to the table at 6:30 and says "there's just a few more tickets ahead of you". by this time, all the people around us had gotten their food even though they arrived long after us. we asked to speak to the manager, who also did not introduce himself. he apologized and said the waiter forgot to put it in. he said he would "take care of it" for us. about 6:45, the food rolled out. my burger patty was falling apart, missing the bbq onions, and was so soggy i had to eat it with a fork. my husband's chicken sandwich was very overdone and a small piece of chicken. the turnip greens and blue cheese mashed potatoes were good.
we literally inhaled the food so we could get over to the stadium. when the waiter brought the check, it was for 32 something dollars. the manager only took off 25% and it was listed as "police discount". what a slap in the face to a customer and quite frankly also the police. i am sick and tired of giving this place another chance. never ever again.

christopher loves the kookamonga. for me, personally, i like it and it’s a fun novelty thing to do, but it doesn’t rank anywhere near my favorites for burgers. i just don’t like to eat a beef patty that is quite that thick. however, in the past i’ve had one of kooky canuck’s regular burgers (i had “the canadian which is bacon, cheese, bbq sauce, and grilled onions) and it was absolutely delicious! so, even if you aren’t interested in an enormous burger, you should still check out kooky cancuck because they have some delicious food! :)

the nachos were incredibly good. they had plenty of real shredded cheese, diced tomatoes and onions, jalapenos and baked beans included with the pulled pork, sauce and chips.

horrific service. we had a group of 8 and were told the wait would be ten minutes. we were instructed to wait around the corner by the bathrooms. twenty minutes go by and we inquired with the hostess how much longer for our table. the hostess then told us in a condescending voice that we would need to wait an additional forty minutes since a few smaller parties had come in and she had to give them the tables that she was going to use for our party. the hostess had no intention of telling us this fact unless we had approached her. we told her that we were leaving and she replied with a "whatever."

awsome place to eat for lunch or dinner. my family and i went downtown for lunch and decided to go to kooky canucks for lunch. we have been there many times before and we jave never been disappointed with there food.the orders are always r ight and very tasty. today my 4year decided he wanted a flag on his hamburger and our waitress jobeth said she would see what she could do and low and behold he had a flag on his hamburger. jobeth is a awsome waitress where else could you go and the waitress is going to go out of her way to make a 4 year old happy instead of just saying she didnt have one. besides the great food the service is awsome. thankyou jobeth.

good eats. heard about the large portions, and yeah its true. my gf and i shared the fried pickles starter - and that was a meal itself. shared the 'smoke' burger - the one with the japalenos - a really good burger with kick. couldn't finish the fries with the burger either. but that's also due to having to wash it all down with one of their massive beers! i'm not complaining, but portions more suitable for americans. should look to share them when going. overall an enjoyable meal.

holy smokes! this burger sizzles!. the holy smoke lives up to its name, for it's a scorcher. the burger's "heat" mostly comes from the fried jalapeño slices topping a sizzling patty of ground beef. along with red onions, tomato, pickles, lettuce and cheddar cheese, the holy smoke burger has a good combination of spiciness and other flavors that make this a great burger.
when i order the holy smoke again, i will wash it down with something that is sweet enough to counter the jalapeños while not hitting me with a "sugar bomb" á la a soda. personally, i believe that cinnamon and other spices of most "pumpkin" wheat ales (such as the shipyard pumpkinhead) are a perfect match for the burger. unfortunately, that particular style of beer is seasonal, but other wheat ales such as anheuser-busch's shock top might make a good substitute. but even with water, the holy smoke is a damn good burger.
