amazing drink specials (they had $1 carsons bottles, and $2 craft beer bottles when we were there!), edamame was warm and salty like it should be, eggrollswere some of the best i've ever had. we had three different sushi rolls, all of which were fantastic. 1 was a volcano which was solid, another came with jalapeno slices on top and was absolutely phenomenal. (request this one, can't remember the name!)

place is a bit small but it's a cool atmosphere. definitely recommend!

sadly disappointing. i love eating at ckb and i was hoping that kanpai would be just as fantastic. i was not very impressed though. i will probably stick with eating at zuki instead.

the vegetable springrollswere a horrible disappointment. i was very excited that there was a vegetarian version of springrollsin a town where most of the food comes with meat. there were too many noodles and the wrapper was overly heavy and difficult to eat.

the pho was also sadly underwhelming. it tasted like beef stew not at all like pho i have had in big cities at vietnamese restaurants.

my husband enjoys sushi and was also not impressed the few times he has ordered it here. it was generally warm and not very fresh.

the two redeeming qualities were the crab rangoon which were so good i think i could eat them as a meal and the cookie dough eggrollswhich were chocolately and gooey and delectable.

kanpai great sushi, drinks, & service. i just went back after a 4 year absence to kanpai and what a surprise.the decor is clean and modern. it has great sushi for a great price! awesome beer/wine selection and specials. reasonable great daily specials. i like the spicy tuna & sob roll and seared ahi tuna!!!
they have the best handmade eggrollsin town! our server miki was friendly and attentive, made great suggestions, and kept our drinks filled and made the visit special. my guest said we should ask for her next time...

delicious, fresh, finest sushi in town. i'm very particular about what restaurants i'll eat at because i'm a classically trained personal chef. i love kanpai, it's one of the few evansville restaurants i frequent. this is because everything is fresh (owner told me mostly organic produce, grass fed beef, wild caught fish) and flavorful! i cannot stress how delicious it is, and it's because they believe in quality and flavor! they have a great beer selection (over 30 beers, craft and domestic) and good wines (great selection of $15 bottles). they also have the best crab rangoon we've ever had. we've lived in cincinnati, louisville, now evansville, and still, they have the best crab rangoon... i'd say hubby and i are connoisseurs. as far as sushi goes, they create tasty, creativerollslike the c.b. roll (yellowtail, scallions, cucumber, mayo, crunch, tobiko) and they have by far the best spicy crab roll! i don't know what they do, but it's magical. the atmosphere is so cool, very hip. they have live music sometimes and craft beer tastings! they're an absolute gem and i am on board with their philosophy on food: fresh, pure, and unprocessed tastes so much better! (plus side: it's better for you!)

kan pai used to be a small, quiet japanese restaurant with good food and great sushi. it was my favorite sushi in town because of the godzilla and tigerrollsalone. the colorful old lady that used to run it ended up selling it and now it is under new management. the menu changed along with the owners and so did the atmosphere. i would still get take out sushi after the change but recently they got new sushi chefs and sadly, the best sushi in town is no more. an unfortunate case of new management coming in and changing everything for the worst. they probably make a lot more money under the new management but not from their old devoted customers.

my boyfriend and i ate here on new years eve and were throughly impressed. although the restaurant was busy and didn't have a waiting area, the server invited us in and immediately asked if we'd like some hot sake. she kindly invited us to sit at a reserved table while we waited for seats at the bar. it was clear the staff and chefs enjoy their jobs and take great pride in their work. the plates were beautiful and arranged with care. we ordered the sashimi combo and, although i am normally nervous of raw fish more than 100 miles from the coast, the fish here was fresh and the combo included more than the basic tuna, salmon and yellow fin. we were served a generous portion of blue marlin belly, cuttlefish with citrus tobiko, spanish marinated herring as well as melt-in-the-mouth yellow fin and hawaiian ahi with a cilantro-jalapeño vinegrette. we also enjoyed several special sushirollswith creative flavor combinations such as red curry and peanut sauce. my favorite roll was the kanpai roll, wrapped in cucumber without rice, it was refreshing and like no other sushi i have tasted. we had a wonderful experience at kanpai and will definately return.

kanpai: trendy, serviceable. we took our two visitors here for an indulgent last night in bend. we were all excited to see the vegetarian menu and ordered vegan miso soup, edamame, seaweed salads, kanpai house salad and plum wine to start. first off, you can't beat the atmosphere of this place -- perfectly darkened, impressive woods everywhere and loads of interesting people to watch. our service was passable, not the most prompt, and falling into the "invisible personality" category, which i appreciate. no friday's smiley faces here.

one note about the kanpai house salad: bravo! many interesting, fresh ingredients served in rice paper: carrots, cilantro, avocado, greens, lotus root chips, mango vinaigrette. i love a salad you can pick up. this one was a screaming success.

post appetizers we really dug in and blasted ourselves withrollsand sashimi galore. the husband gave thumbs way up for freshness of the yellowtail. the la pastora and yakuzarollsstand out: a yellowtail ceviche and tempura jalapeno roll, respectively. and i had to order the mothra roll with its habanero sauce: pretty good. there was a mushroom-stuffed tofu dish i can't remember the name of, but the presentation was amazing and it tasted fantastic.

i agree with another reviewer that therollsneed to be neater and tighter. another visit to kanpai is in order before i say i love it.
