it is a small cozyplacewith good food and sushi. the lunch bento box was a good amount of food for a reasonable price. since its small if it is crowded you may have to be patient. call ahead isn't always reliable.

delicious sushi, loved the beef bulgogi, and the tempura zucchini appetizer was really good. the service was excellent even though the restaurant was very busy. it is a smallplacewith an energetic atmosphere. a very good craft beer list, unusual for an asian restaurant. and four sake choices. we tried it because we love ckb, in henderson, ky (same owner) and we'll be back. we found the staff to be very friendly.

we had good service, decent food. but theplaceis too small and cramped. the food is overpriced. for a cheaper meal with food just as good, there are other places in town to visit.

big artistic thumbs up.. i have eaten at kanpai since jason took over-and have never had a bad experience. as a free-lance writer, it is a greatplaceto write, watch and interact with other customers and staff, and is laid back as well. food is excellent, and the staff will do whatever it takes to make your experience what you need. to go drinks, menu suggestions, etc. whether i have a quick 20 minutes to eat, or an afternoon to sit and work, i always feel welcomed, unrushed, and leave feeling better than when i arrive. a jewel in evansville for sure.

raise the damn bar. good sushi in evansville is hard to come by and thisplacedefinitely does not have it. kanpai is the definition of americanized japanese food. i asked for my sushi roll to be remade then watched as the manager who was on duty remake the roll which ended up being worse than the first. miso soup tasted like it was made from condensed. nothing about kanpai felt like a really good sushi or japanese restaurant but they sure do charge like one! definitely still worth the drive out of town for great sushi! last, i got a free dessert for complaining. deep fried cookie dough sounded great ... oh man my stomach hated me for a couple days.

great atmosphere. make a reservation, theplaceis small and cute and eclectic, so you can wait a while without a reservation. sushi is good, very americanized with lots of mayo and fried, would like to see more veggies/fruits involved. good beer list, good house wine. will come back for sure.

so, so, so, so, good!!!!. wow, just went tonight.... i had their two specials for the night. first off, the crab cakes. let me tell you, they are the best i have ever had. almost completely crab, with a light breading. they come with two great sauces. next, and my favorite, the pow pow shrimp. at least 15 huge rock shrimp in tempura batter and tossed in a creamy and tangy sauce over cabbage. wow... and for only $9.95. i felt like i owed them at least $5 more for it. my wife and daughter had the general tso's chicken. best in the city. along with $2 flat top ale's from our own state's, nobleville, in. this is a gem in evansville.

had a great experience..... went for lunch today. food was great. started with crab rangoon. it was freshly made with lots of filling. outstanding. we then had our miso soup. very good broth and the green onion was fresh and crunchy. it had tofu, which is tradtional in the soup. we then got our main course. i got the beef and vegetables and my wife shared the teriyaki chicken. both were outstanding. i also got a half order of the sob sushi. it was delicious. the cilantro added so much to the tuna, jalapeno, and onion roll. plus the domestic beers are only $1 a bottle on saturdays. only complaint was they gave me a dirty glass for my beer and it was cold in the place. they quickly gave me a clean glass, and since theplaceis small, not much they could do about the temp when the door was opened since it is such a small place. i will definately return. good price too.

american style asian. we went at lunch time and all though theplaceis very small and a table was immediately available it took a long time to get our food and my food came out before my companion's food did, so being polite, my food was cold by the time theirs was served. all food not coming out at the same time is my biggest pet peeve and the thing that prevents me from returning. the salad dressing is very good. the chop chai and chicken w/vegetables was average. the chicken in both dishes was very dry and tasted to me like something that was cooked the day before. the sushi was good. i may return for sushi or soup and salad, but not when i'm on my lunch hour. i was late getting back to work.

good enough!. my opinion of this restaurant has wavered over the last several years, but my current position is this: kanpai is a funplacefor decent sushi / asian fusion cuisine. it's got a hip atmosphere, fairly unique menu, and nice drink specials, which is for a sushi place, because you're usually spending slightly more on food.

it can be a bit cramped for my taste, especially when you have to wait (it's best to wait outside). a few of the menu items seem to be a bit over-priced. but i do like that their salads seem slightly more substantial than what you get at similar restaurants.

everything is great, you can't go wrong.. i've been going to this restaurant for a really long time, and i've liked it even when the service and the management was terrible. i now work there under the new management of jayson munoz and i've watched the restaurant come full circle from what it used to be. same sushi, same food, completely new experience. the interior has been greatly renovated for a better, newer atmosphere. if you're looking for a smaller, more intimate, and higher quality driven place, kanpai is theplaceto go. since i've worked there i've tried everything on the menu and everything is great. you simply can't go wrong with anything on the menu. if you like it spicy, there are wonder spicy entrées. if you don't like raw fish, we have plenty of cooked sushi rolls. everything we make is fresh and made by hand. i've rolled the egg rolls, i've rolled the spring rolls. i've wrapped the crab rangoon. we make everything by hand from quality ingredients. we buy organic meat. we take custom orders and do whatever we can to please you. since we know we're small, we make every customer experience a great one. most of our customers are people that come back often and have rarely, if ever, had a bad experience. try us out, i know you'll love it. i still love to eat there and everything i've ever ordered has been great.

yum yum. such a cute hipplaceand the food is great! the service is excellent. the manager will go out of his way to make you feel at home. we even celebrated a graduation there even though the lights were out from a tripped fuse during half our dinner. try the crab rangoon and the yum yum roll.

great sushi. ate there last night, 8/14/10 and the food and service were excellent. the restaurant was small, but very nice and they had some wonderful outdoor patio area. we like our sushi, so when we go to any of them, we always get the rainbow roll so we can compare like items among all the sushi places. it was excellent. we also had the dragon roll, spider roll, spicy tuna, 2 rainbow rolls. all were great!!! the service was very attentive and they were very informative. i would highly recommend thisplaceto anyone who likes sushi.

kanpai: trendy, serviceable. we took our two visitors here for an indulgent last night in bend. we were all excited to see the vegetarian menu and ordered vegan miso soup, edamame, seaweed salads, kanpai house salad and plum wine to start. first off, you can't beat the atmosphere of thisplace-- perfectly darkened, impressive woods everywhere and loads of interesting people to watch. our service was passable, not the most prompt, and falling into the "invisible personality" category, which i appreciate. no friday's smiley faces here.

one note about the kanpai house salad: bravo! many interesting, fresh ingredients served in rice paper: carrots, cilantro, avocado, greens, lotus root chips, mango vinaigrette. i love a salad you can pick up. this one was a screaming success.

post appetizers we really dug in and blasted ourselves with rolls and sashimi galore. the husband gave thumbs way up for freshness of the yellowtail. the la pastora and yakuza rolls stand out: a yellowtail ceviche and tempura jalapeno roll, respectively. and i had to order the mothra roll with its habanero sauce: pretty good. there was a mushroom-stuffed tofu dish i can't remember the name of, but the presentation was amazing and it tasted fantastic.

i agree with another reviewer that the rolls need to be neater and tighter. another visit to kanpai is in order before i say i love it.

no different than any otherplacein bend. so - as has been our repeated experience with dinning in bend... way over priced, the descriptive writers of the menus far exceed the cooks' abilities, and kanpai is no different. at first glance - while a bit pricey, the menu sounded excellent. in reality though, food portions are very scant, food flavor was way off the mark of what the menu suggested, and the price was right up there with full-on resort town expensive. two thumbs down from us...
