terrible experience at thisplaceon saturday. i reserved three weeks in advance and the reservation process went mostly smoothly, except i had to ask twice for a price list for bottle service and after asking twice for this service, i was told that a group would be taking over half of our table at midnight. i then had to again tell them that i wanted my table as i was planning on getting bottle service too. at this point, the person organizing my party said that wouldn't be a problem in that case.

when we got to joverse, no one greeted us at the door, and we literally waited 20 mins before any one asked if what we were waiting for. during this time, no one that worked there even came to the door area so that we could even ask for assistance. finally, after greeting us, they made us wait another 10 minutes while they cleaned our table. our reservation had been at 9:30 so our table should have been clean by then and waiting for us, but it wasn't even clean by 9:50 when we finally found someone.

our waiter was very nice, however the drinks took over 20 minutes to come, and when our food started coming out, the runners did not know what food belonged to who, and a lot of my guests did not get the correct plate. the prices were normal, the the drinks were good, the food was good (but also very greasy) and there was only one salad as a vegetarian option.

at 11:30, we were ready to order our bottle service, so we did, however by 12:30, we still hadn't been served our bottle. during the entire hour, not one person working at joverse came to our table. eventually, another server (or maybe manager?) came to tell us that a group that had ordered more bottles than us was taking over our table. we explained that we had been here for hours, and had reserved our table 3 weeks in advance for the whole night, mentioning we wanted dinner and bottle service, but they didn't care. we were moved to a tiny table (our group had 12 people), but on the bright side they finally brought our bottle. again, another mistake here though, since they brought kettle one, rather than the grey goose that i had ordered. about 5 minutes after they dropped off the correct bottle, our old server mysteriously appeared, wanting to be paid in full for the bottle immediately, and ''apologized'' for disappearing for so long.

overall, probably one of the worst experience i've ever had at a bar. the "bottle service" was not service at all, and was an embarrassment on their part. by the end of the night, my friends were angry, sober, and the night was basically ruined, and joverse lost money as we had originally intended to buy several bottles, but decided against it based on our experience with the first.

i am never against the idea of discovering a hip new supper club. so when urbanspoon named joverse on their top new restaurants in canada 2013 list, i was excited to give them a try! located in old montreal, you’ll know that you’ve found theplacewhen you see the giant golden rooster on the side of the building. they certainly do have a hip and exciting aesthetic. the entrance to the restaurant is located down an alley which helps to keep things even more mysterious. once inside we were met with a coat check followed by a very chic room, complete with gleaming polished woods, exposed brick, and funky art pieces. there’s a large bar in the center of the room, perfect for the later hours when theplacetransforms into it’s nighttime alter-ego. they describe themselves as a restaurant with european soul, montreal heart, and an nyc-inspired setting. i agree that the atmosphere does feel quite “big city,” but i’m unsure of how well they execute on all of these points. on top of that, the food is supposed to be latin-californian. for some reason. suffice to say, they seem to tote a bunch of different identities which makes things a bit confusing.

the servers were friendly and nice, and we were seated in a cute little booth which invited an intimate dining experience. starting with cocktails! they claim that their cocktails are invented by star mixologists, so they’ve gotta be good. i almost got one called a bridal shower, but in the end i stuck to something a little bit more typical of myself and chose the julius caesar (tanqueray 10, lime, jalapeno sauce, olive juice, worcestershire, horseradish, walters - $15.00) since their version sounded quite good. i liked the way that the horseradish flavour came through and i enjoyed the olive and pickled green bean garnish. otherwise, it seemed like a fairly standard and not especially remarkable version of a caesar. at the $15 price point, you would think that the “star mixologists” could have come up with something really unique and innovative.

we were warned by our server that the food is served tapas-style and that we would need to order 2-3 dishes per person. the menu features an array of items, ranging from tacos to philly cheese to korean wings to ramen. again, slightly confusing. i liked their idea of offering “the whole damn menu!” for $198, which is a great idea if you’re with a larger group. 3 oysters and a glass of cava for $15 also sounds like my kind of night. we decided to try to stay a bit more on the latin-californian side of their menu, since that’s what they’re supposed to be known for. i noticed the oyster shucking station immediately upon entering the restaurant and i enjoyed that their setup is right in the middle of the action, for all to see. oysters it is! (champagne vinegar & jalapeno mignonette - 6 for $19). our oysters arrived quickly, six plump beausoleils from miramichi bay in new brunswick. these are some of my favourites because of their briny flavour, which i like. this was my favourite part of the whole meal. the mignonette was really vinegary and nice, the oysters were shucked properly, and they really took care of themselves in deliciousness.

next to arrive was the esquites guacamole (cayenne & lime corn, pico de gallo, micro coriander, cotija fresco cheese, homemade tortilla chips - $14.00). i really love homemade tortilla chips, so i was happy to see those. they were crisp and fried perfectly. i also love avocado, so a pile of guacamole is never a bad thing. i liked all of the bright and fresh vegetables but the guacamole seemed to be missing something. there could have been something extra going on with the slightly bland flavour. and what was with that glass of sauce? this wasn’t mentioned in the description. were we supposed to pour this over top? or dip into it? it was almost like a sweet and strange bbq sauce which didn’t seem to serve much of a purpose on this plate.

finally, we ordered tacos as our main event. they had two types available on the menu, so we ordered both. beer batter shrimp tacos (serrano salsa, napa cabbage, pico de gallo, chipolte mayo, corn flour tortilla - $14.00) and spicy brisket tacos (24h smoked bbq brisket, habanero bbq sauce, napa cabbage, micro coriander, corn flour tortilla - $15.00). when they say "tacos," they mean that they will be giving you two. of the two, i thought that the shrimp was better. i liked the batter on the shrimp and i thought that they were cooked well. the chipotle mayo added a great smoky-spiciness which i thought worked really well.

on the other hand, i found the brisket dry and disappointing. the tiny bits of chopped brisket barely maintained any of its unique flavour at all and was over-spiced. the sauce might have been the same as what came with the guacamole?

overall, these tacos were nothing special. i have had far, far better.

lastly, we ordered the churros (spiced chocolate dip - $6.00) for dessert. spiced chocolate dip? it was plain nutella. the server even called it nutella when he brought it to us. the churros were fine. they were warm and fried well, and coated nicely in cinnamon and powdered sugar.

thisplacewas way too expensive for the food that we had. there is no way whatsoever that we got over $100 in quality and value in the items that we ate, and we could surely have had a far grander meal for the same price elsewhere. the food wasn’t all that interesting, and while the space is nice, i find that their vision is a bit confused.

great spot. went to joverse for the first time this past weekend and had a blast. was a friends birthday and although it was busy the waiter was friendly and patient. food was excellent and reasonably priced for old montreal. music was great and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. will definitely be back.

wow! let me just start by s.... wow!
let me just start by saying that i organize a lot of groups and parties for friends and family alike. this time i was organizing my wife's birthday and had heard that joverse was theplaceto be, it certainly didn't disappoint.
i first contacted joverse via email requesting a group reservation and i had a number of questions. to my surprise i got a call back from their corporate booking guy within minutes! he was extremely professional and knowledgeable.
our ensuing night at joverse started with a really warm welcome from the host (not to mention he was wearing a kick ass pair of jordans with pink socks and bowtie! lol) and an even warmer welcome from our waitress. considering how busy it was on this saturday night, it was refreshing to find a bar in montreal that didn't have a snobby stuck up staff without any smiles.
food wise my wife and i shared a bunch of tapas size plates....the crab cakes and the beef tacos were amazing! my wife loved her cocktail and i loved the name of her cocktail. they made it with johnnie walker and cleverly named it the johnnie mnemonic.
the late-night vibe blew my mind! i honestly haven't seen anything like this in montreal or anywhere for that matter since the last time i went to new york. the crowd was douche free with good looking people all around and the music was good times from start to finish.

looking for a great experience eating out with your friends and parting...trust me, don't hesitate!

horrible service and prices. never again.. it was my first time going to thisplacewhich was apparently a coolplaceand we were celebrating a birthday, group of 16. decor and music was great. but that is nothing compared to the terrible and unpleasant service and greeting that we had. half of us were already there and ordered, when we were suddenly asked to be pulled a table because not everyone yet has arrived and that the reservation was at 9pm, i was about 10:30pm... since when do you get pulled a table from a group when the "whole group. is not there (missing 1/16)? worst part is yet to come. when the food arrived, the "manager" then came and he said that the table we had was a 2000$ table and that we only ordered one meal each and a bottle of wine (until now)... * they make you feel guilty for not paying enough when they could be doing more on that table with other customers.* how it ends, the managers asks the bouncer to put out the whole group, we paid the bottle only (because that's what was only consumed) and left. now other than that, the portion of food (main dishes) that i saw was incredibly small that would be considered as entrees. i would not recommend this place, food didn't taste it, but you don't get enough for what you will pay for, service was irritating, if you look like you won't be ordering enough, you'll get the amount of service that comes with it. never again i would step into this awful place.

beautiful space and good food. you're looking for a greatplaceto eat, have drinks in a fabulous decor, no need to search anymore joverse is the place. no matter if you want to have a whole dinner, just grab a bite or a drink you'll find what you need. must try the tacos and if you want something real healthy, the house salad, with aragula, figs and goat cheese is simply delicious. weekends, if you are more of the dancing type, look for the red room that's where action happens. i never tire of thisplacein the beautiful old montreal. especially perfect for the 5 à 7. and the decor, a mix of wood and metal makes it a warm space as much as design oriented. good food, good drinks, affordable prices, all in a beautiful decor with welcoming patrons. what more do you want ?

just what montreal needed!. joverse is the kind ofplacemontreal always lacked!

located in the beautiful old montreal, the restaurant has some of the best tapas style food i have had in the city. the sliders are delicious and the beef tartar can rival any top restaurants around the world.

the staff is excellent!! i don't remember seeing a better staff in a bar/restaurant in montreal. they are friendly and welcoming, yet very respectful. the restaurant upstairs has a great ambiance and good music is always on the menu! nowhere in montreal you will see better music playing while you enjoy their delicious tapas and specials of the day.

and yes... if you go downstairs, red room, turns into the "happening" house music spot. a small electric room with a capacity of 50-70 people with a fantastic bar and the best local dj talents on the weekends.

i celebrated nye 2014 at joverse and it was a night to remember! you can always count on thisplacefor a great time!

best food. i reserved for a group for my birthday. thisplacewas perfect!
the food is awesome, very creative, loved that we could all share little bites instead of big huge individual dishes, my favorite being the duck tacos (omg!! )
the service is fast and effective and there is a dj right in the restaurant, so the vibe was super upbeat and happy :)
we all went downstairs in the red room after dinner, where theathmosphere is different, a bit darker and perfect to dance: it was definitely one of the greatest birthdays i ever had!
if you like excellent food, good vibes, house music and unpretentious crowd, you need to hang at joverse!!

if you're looking for the most happeningplaceto be at, be sure to go to joverse. in my opinion it is by far the best lookingplaceto hit up in montreal! after admiring the totally one-off decor you will love the service from the amazing and friendly staff to cater to your needs ;) there's also something special added to their already stellar food menu every evening! don't miss another night away from the beautiful clientele and not to mention the amazing music, whether you choose to be upstairs or to get lost in the music downstairs in the redroom be sure to try them both! cheers!!

beautiful, trendy, and delicious. with a fantastic ambience, friendly staff, and delicious food, this restaurant/bar is a greatplaceto check out if you're in the old port! be sure to try their unique tacos that come in several varieties. my personal favourite are the duck tacos, which are based off the chinese peking duck dish.

the bartenders are extremely knowledgeable about their craft and have lots of mixology skill. don't be afraid to ask them to make something for you that's out of the box!

in addition to the great food and drinks, they also have incredible music as they hire a dj to provide the perfect background music to accompany your meal.
