a little disappointing....... we visited joverse while inmontrealfor memorial day weekend. we arrived on-time for a friday night reservation @ 7:30. we were not greeted and had to ask the bartender where we should check in. a gentleman came over, showed us to our seats and advised that the table had to be avail for a 9:30 seating. we figured a 2 hour window should be sufficient. this "restaurant" seemed to be more of a social / spot-of-the-moment place. the music was already above conversation level and made hearing our host very hard. it has a tapas-style menu and proved to be pricey. each item was served with two "portions", even though there were three in our party. we asked if a third could be added and was told we would have to order a second plate. considering an average cost of $13-15 dollars per order, we made do. we tried their crab cakes (sauce on top too sweet and unnecessary), pulled-pork taco (best item of the group), beef sliders (greasy and under-cooked) and a blackboard special of deconstructed ribs with an overly spicy side of kimchi (didn't care for either). one would think the cost would allow for the size of the portions to be more substantial but one would be wrong. the service was pushed as they seemed to be clearing things from the table as soon as a plate became empty (and more than once had to ask them to stop removing things before we had finished with them). maybe this pace allowed them to turn the table quicker but it was annoying. without alcohol, but including a tip, our bill was approx $90.-. for the quantity and quality of the food, this was an experience we will not repeat.

i am never against the idea of discovering a hip new supper club. so when urbanspoon named joverse on their top new restaurants in canada 2013 list, i was excited to give them a try! located in old montreal, you’ll know that you’ve found the place when you see the giant golden rooster on the side of the building. they certainly do have a hip and exciting aesthetic. the entrance to the restaurant is located down an alley which helps to keep things even more mysterious. once inside we were met with a coat check followed by a very chic room, complete with gleaming polished woods, exposed brick, and funky art pieces. there’s a large bar in the center of the room, perfect for the later hours when the place transforms into it’s nighttime alter-ego. they describe themselves as a restaurant with european soul, montrealheart, and an nyc-inspired setting. i agree that the atmosphere does feel quite “big city,” but i’m unsure of how well they execute on all of these points. on top of that, the food is supposed to be latin-californian. for some reason. suffice to say, they seem to tote a bunch of different identities which makes things a bit confusing.

the servers were friendly and nice, and we were seated in a cute little booth which invited an intimate dining experience. starting with cocktails! they claim that their cocktails are invented by star mixologists, so they’ve gotta be good. i almost got one called a bridal shower, but in the end i stuck to something a little bit more typical of myself and chose the julius caesar (tanqueray 10, lime, jalapeno sauce, olive juice, worcestershire, horseradish, walters - $15.00) since their version sounded quite good. i liked the way that the horseradish flavour came through and i enjoyed the olive and pickled green bean garnish. otherwise, it seemed like a fairly standard and not especially remarkable version of a caesar. at the $15 price point, you would think that the “star mixologists” could have come up with something really unique and innovative.

we were warned by our server that the food is served tapas-style and that we would need to order 2-3 dishes per person. the menu features an array of items, ranging from tacos to philly cheese to korean wings to ramen. again, slightly confusing. i liked their idea of offering “the whole damn menu!” for $198, which is a great idea if you’re with a larger group. 3 oysters and a glass of cava for $15 also sounds like my kind of night. we decided to try to stay a bit more on the latin-californian side of their menu, since that’s what they’re supposed to be known for. i noticed the oyster shucking station immediately upon entering the restaurant and i enjoyed that their setup is right in the middle of the action, for all to see. oysters it is! (champagne vinegar & jalapeno mignonette - 6 for $19). our oysters arrived quickly, six plump beausoleils from miramichi bay in new brunswick. these are some of my favourites because of their briny flavour, which i like. this was my favourite part of the whole meal. the mignonette was really vinegary and nice, the oysters were shucked properly, and they really took care of themselves in deliciousness.

next to arrive was the esquites guacamole (cayenne & lime corn, pico de gallo, micro coriander, cotija fresco cheese, homemade tortilla chips - $14.00). i really love homemade tortilla chips, so i was happy to see those. they were crisp and fried perfectly. i also love avocado, so a pile of guacamole is never a bad thing. i liked all of the bright and fresh vegetables but the guacamole seemed to be missing something. there could have been something extra going on with the slightly bland flavour. and what was with that glass of sauce? this wasn’t mentioned in the description. were we supposed to pour this over top? or dip into it? it was almost like a sweet and strange bbq sauce which didn’t seem to serve much of a purpose on this plate.

finally, we ordered tacos as our main event. they had two types available on the menu, so we ordered both. beer batter shrimp tacos (serrano salsa, napa cabbage, pico de gallo, chipolte mayo, corn flour tortilla - $14.00) and spicy brisket tacos (24h smoked bbq brisket, habanero bbq sauce, napa cabbage, micro coriander, corn flour tortilla - $15.00). when they say "tacos," they mean that they will be giving you two. of the two, i thought that the shrimp was better. i liked the batter on the shrimp and i thought that they were cooked well. the chipotle mayo added a great smoky-spiciness which i thought worked really well.

on the other hand, i found the brisket dry and disappointing. the tiny bits of chopped brisket barely maintained any of its unique flavour at all and was over-spiced. the sauce might have been the same as what came with the guacamole?

overall, these tacos were nothing special. i have had far, far better.

lastly, we ordered the churros (spiced chocolate dip - $6.00) for dessert. spiced chocolate dip? it was plain nutella. the server even called it nutella when he brought it to us. the churros were fine. they were warm and fried well, and coated nicely in cinnamon and powdered sugar.

this place was way too expensive for the food that we had. there is no way whatsoever that we got over $100 in quality and value in the items that we ate, and we could surely have had a far grander meal for the same price elsewhere. the food wasn’t all that interesting, and while the space is nice, i find that their vision is a bit confused.

joverse uniquemontrealconcept. there doesn't seem to be a term able to encompass the experience offered by joverse. good thing come to those who take advantage of the dinner service. affordable yet bold and flavorful joverse specialises in tapas style tex/mex. the first thing people will notice upon entering is the warm and refined industrial look. the service was exceptional. the music adapts to the time of the night starting relaxed and non intrusive and pick up heat towards midnight when joverse becauses a real clubbing hot-spot. a fantastique roster of dj's are to be expected.

wow! let me just start by s.... wow!
let me just start by saying that i organize a lot of groups and parties for friends and family alike. this time i was organizing my wife's birthday and had heard that joverse was the place to be, it certainly didn't disappoint.
i first contacted joverse via email requesting a group reservation and i had a number of questions. to my surprise i got a call back from their corporate booking guy within minutes! he was extremely professional and knowledgeable.
our ensuing night at joverse started with a really warm welcome from the host (not to mention he was wearing a kick ass pair of jordans with pink socks and bowtie! lol) and an even warmer welcome from our waitress. considering how busy it was on this saturday night, it was refreshing to find a bar inmontrealthat didn't have a snobby stuck up staff without any smiles.
food wise my wife and i shared a bunch of tapas size plates....the crab cakes and the beef tacos were amazing! my wife loved her cocktail and i loved the name of her cocktail. they made it with johnnie walker and cleverly named it the johnnie mnemonic.
the late-night vibe blew my mind! i honestly haven't seen anything like this inmontrealor anywhere for that matter since the last time i went to new york. the crowd was douche free with good looking people all around and the music was good times from start to finish.

looking for a great experience eating out with your friends and parting...trust me, don't hesitate!

impressive fresh and delicious food. i met friends and family for a birthday celebration at joverse in february 2014 when i was on business inmontrealfrom toronto. i was not sure what to expect on all fronts but things got off to an excellent start with great service. very professional, warm, and engaging wait staff who were excited to suggest drinks and menu items.

we started off with raw oysters - they were so fresh they almost melted in your mouth - sweet. they must have been flown in that morning. i haven't tasted oysters that fresh since my days living on the west coast.

i followed it up with a tomato and buffalo mozzarella salad that again featured super fresh ingredients. not easy to find super flavourful tomatoes in february. they tasted as if picked from a tuscan garden. huge portion that i could have shared - but i ate it all up.

i finished off my meal with a couple of joverse tacos - i could have eaten a dozen they were so good. flavour explosion in your mouth with just enough heat.

this was one of the best meals i've had in a restaurant in canada in years. anyone inmontrealfor business or pleasure should add joverse to their must dine list. i'll be back and will tell my friends and colleagues. bravo.

just whatmontrealneeded!. joverse is the kind of placemontrealalways lacked!

located in the beautiful old montreal, the restaurant has some of the best tapas style food i have had in the city. the sliders are delicious and the beef tartar can rival any top restaurants around the world.

the staff is excellent!! i don't remember seeing a better staff in a bar/restaurant in montreal. they are friendly and welcoming, yet very respectful. the restaurant upstairs has a great ambiance and good music is always on the menu! nowhere inmontrealyou will see better music playing while you enjoy their delicious tapas and specials of the day.

and yes... if you go downstairs, red room, turns into the "happening" house music spot. a small electric room with a capacity of 50-70 people with a fantastic bar and the best local dj talents on the weekends.

i celebrated nye 2014 at joverse and it was a night to remember! you can always count on this place for a great time!

awesome experience!!!. the vibe and ambience at joverse combined with outstanding service and hospitality is hard to beat. owner and local dj/promoter julian prince (aka notv) takes nightlife to a whole new level. his attention to detail and warm presence carries through to all the staff making joverse an extremely pleasurable experience from the food to the service which is hard to match. expect warm efficient service and a friendly smile, along with a simple selection of tapas engineered to have something for everyone. downstairs you'll find red room, a small cozy bar with a sound system that kicks! hosting some of montreal's finest dj talent playing everything from techno, tech house, to progressive. encompassing all the finer things thatmontrealnightlife has to offer joverse is a must to visit if you haven't been yet. from working with them djing in the red room as well as enjoying going there as a customer i've never been disappointed and always have a great experience.

mmmmmm tacos. the tacos were absolutely amazing!!! i had the pulled pork tacos and i tried some of my friends fish tacos. we also had some of their homemade guacamole with pomegranate and it was so fresh and delicious.

the dj started playing some really good tunes at around 11pm, so we couldn't help but dance a little and burn off some of those calories. so much fun!

i definitely recommend you check it out if you're ever in the oldmontrealarea.

worst night in a long time. seriously i don't understand the reviews being so positive. i can usually find the positive in every place i go and i go out in oldmontreal.. a lot !

but this is got to be the worst place i have been in oldmontrealin a long time.

service was beyond horrible and the way the waiters treated us in unexplicable.

we could not get food before 10:30 (2 hours after we arrived). we had to leave and find another place to actually have supper before midnight (after 2 hours we only got slidders and oisters)

the table was right in the middle of the waiters way so they were bumping into us all the time

i hated it.

that goes without saying that it is a very young crowd (18yrs oldish)

i will never ever go back. the customer there is far from priority and it is very much overpriced for what you get (if you can ever get your food)

the divas are used to crazymontrealweather so when the forecast called for freezing rain, it had no impact on our dinner plans.  after all, we have to eat!  and more importantly, zeus had requested a divas night because he missed us and was in withdrawal.  so who are we to deny him such a pleasure? as always, parking in oldmontrealis trying.  parking with a snowstorm becomes a sport.  and while the valet at one of the hotels refused to take our car because we weren’t going to the hotel or attached restaurant, he kindly pointed out an illegal parking spot on the corner.  apparently the parking guys were being lenient because of the weather, and somehow we didn’t get a ticket. located in the heart of oldmontrealon st jacques,  the main floor has a large bar in the center of the room, as well as tables and banquets with a dj mixing in the corner – the style is very loft like.  the divas, sweet pea, vegan vixen, and our friend kool-aid, kept a seat free for zeus.
