since we're in a coastal region, one definitely needs to eat seafood. however, not knowing what exact seafood to order, we decided to ordered fish curry meals (with the staple boiled rice). along with that, we also ate buthai tava fry and crocker tava fry (koddai).

firstly, we were absolutely surprised at the size of the two types of fish ordered - it was much bigger than what we expected! and given the price, it is definitely worth it.
1. fish curry meals: this had boiledriceand a fish curry. the curry was not too spicy, and was delicious. it does have a homely feel to it, so you can have this in case you want to eat some tasty home-style mangalorean fish curry.
2. buthai tava fry and 3.crocker tava fry (koddai): as mentioned earlier, the size of the fish was greater than what we expected. the fish was absolutely tasty, with the perfect amount of spice. and the taste of coconut oil used for frying the fish was prominent in these dishes. the masala used for the koddai fry was amazing!

overall: this was a value for money, delicious, and delightful meal.

had gone there for dinner on my recent visit to manglore and loved the way they have kept it simple , no menu , just fish meals @ 70/- and assorted fish frys , depending on the fresh catch of the day . don't know if it was only on the day i visited or even normally they don't carry any prawns , crabs or any other sea food , so will call it a fish fry resturant only not a sea food one .🙃.
had ordered a slice of anjal fry with myricethali and was blown over by the super freshness and the lightness of the fish , amongst the best i have ever tasted in manglore . the masala coating was not thick and overwhelming like in so many other places .
i surely highly recommend this place as it has become a close second to my favorite fish place in manglore, giri manja . am definitely going back the next time i am in town

a must visit place for those who love fish fry. try anjal fish fry once and you will end up here once a month at least! people who prefer whitericeover boiledricemight be a little disappointed as this place only serves boiled rice. also, they serve tasty buttermilk along with fish meals which is like a cherry on cake.

it's a quick meal restaurant .. do not expect to have a relaxed meal.by default thali will be served withriceof your choice and you need to choose the fish, now here is where the catch is, a meal is just 40rs but a seer fish is 220 for a slice and 320rs for a pomfret which is on a higher side for a coastal region but the taste is extremely good.the slice of fish is huge so even one fish is sufficient for two people .

a delicious fish treat.
for seafood lovers it's a perfect stop.
they just get a plate including portion of rice,a portion of vegetables dry prep, (different everyday)
a bowl of fish curry with a small leave of fish.

then they offer a variety of fried fish( u can ask for price as its expensive but delicious) a special thing they serve powdered fried fish batter which is so yummy to go with the fried fish as well as the rice.

they don't serve water first instead they give boiledricewater which is healthy too.
extrariceis chargeable.

finally it's a great place for afternoon or a dinner. but u may have to wait for ur turn as its always full.

old school restaurant in mangalore. this restaurant serves fish and meals only. limited menu with tasty fish fries are the best part. hotel narayana is the must go restaurant in mangalore if u are pescetarian. anjal fry and pompret fry are the signature dishes. patrons who coming here eating anjal fry only withoutricelike snacks. anjal fry and pompret are the must eat fish dishes in mangalore. anjal ( ayakura in malayalam ) and pompret (avoli meen) are prepared in homely style with chilly powder. hotel narayana is the one of the best place in mangalore if you are not looking for ambience and hygene factors.

unbelievably simple and delicious food served with a smile.
we were so enamoured by the food that no one remembered to take a picture :p

they have set meals with fish curry, white or redriceand a beans preparation. along with that one can have their pick of the variety of tawa masala fish available on the particular day. we had the anjal or angelfish which was absolutely heavenly. masala was just perfect...not too spicy with the flavours coming through.

a small simple place which puts delicious fish on your plate(and smiles on your face!). this place is all about seafood. come, eat, leave. no fancy ambience or a menu. the fare is simple, fish meals and 2-3 varieties of fish fry. the fish meal isriceserved with a mangalorean fish curry. what stands out about this place is the fish fry. the fish fry is to die for. your mouth starts to water the moment you see the waiter enter carrying a platter filled with the day's fare. they serve bangude, anjal and the occasional pomfret. the fish is cooked to perfection, which just melts in your mouth. the icing on the cake would be the spicy masala which he sprinkles over your fish.

the delicious food plus relatively cheaper prices would never stop you from visiting this place over and over. this, hands down is the best seafood place in mangalore. this place should be on the top of anyone's list who's looking for seafood in the city.

ok so first things first.
the struggle begins when you try searching for the hotel. this part is easy as the hotel is quite popular, and you can find the place without a lot of struggle. now once you have found the hotel, comes the most difficult part, especially if you are in to have lunch. and that is to find a place to sit! stuffed with as many people as would be enough to make the hotel choke (if it could breathe), you need to have patience till you find a place. but once you do find a place, the service is prompt. in no time a man comes to clean the tables, then comes a man who brings a plate withriceand one or two basic curries, and then comes the man who brings the star of the show - fishes! he brings all the variety the hotel has to offer in a single large plate, you could see and decide for yourself which one you want to have. the fishes are crispy, accompanied by fried masala which goes along superbly with the fish. the method of cooking is quite in contrast with what girimanjas has. the hotel property is absolutely basic, targeted at the office staff and people working nearby who come here to have lunch and go. for lunch, i would recommend not bringing your family along. but other wise, go for it.

hotel narayana is another legendary seafood restaurant in mangalore one must try only if they have passion and crave for typical mangalorean seafood cuisine.
this place has a very short menu fish of the season three to four verities and a fish curryrice(meen vansu). typically they have mackrel (bangude), sardine (bootai), kingfish (anjaal), lady fish (kane), pomphret (maanji) etc.
their fish fry is serve along with the roasted spices from the tava, which tastes amazing and em drooling as i am writing. they fish fry masala is a secret and certainly will please your taste buds. it’s a little spicy for me but i have crave for spicy or extra spicy food.
if one shuld go here to taste what i mentioned above, please ignore the general hygine, service and ambience.
5 for meeting my expectations

if you love fish then you must visit this place! simple seating at 2 levels and always full, this place has pleasant and fast service along with delicious food. the meal will havericeand a fish gravy along with a dry preparation. the gravy is the typical traditional flavor of mangalore, very simple flavours but delicious. but the best thing is the fish fry they serve separately. i have tried the anjal fry twice. decent portion for one person (though it is so tasty you won't stop at one) perfectly done, very crisp and strong flavours. there is a dry masala, the one they coat the fish with, that they provide separately and that is to die for. just ask for extra of that and mix it with thericeand that is absolutely amazing!! a must visit if you are in mangalore.

it was a hot afternoon in mangalore and i was desperate for some good sea food. hotel narayana was highly recommended in a blog that i read and gave no second thought to visit it. located in the bunder region is a small home converted restaurant which is over 60 years old. it's an old fashioned restaurant with a rustic and sophisticated ambiance.

this place has no menu, as soon as you have occupied your table, you're served a meal and an other server brings in a platter of different variety pan fried fish from which you can choose any. the meal consists of brown rice, mango pickle, vegetable curry, fish curry and buttermilk. while in fish platter there's king fish, pomfret, sardines etc. i took the king fish, it was served with a powder which is the fried masala.
the fish curry is a sour curry made with tomato puree. the fish is soft, spicy and melts in the mouth. the podi along with it has strong flavour. the brownricewith fish curry and fish is divine. to finish of the meal is a buttermilk with added soda.

overall delicious food for that price is, money well spent. the quality is something that lacks and is quite unhygienic. i would recommend this place if you want the taste of mangalore seafood delicacy. sometimes it's these small places that can give you sweet, unforgettable memories.
