since we're in a coastal region, one definitely needs to eat seafood. however, not knowing what exact seafood to order, we decided to ordered fishcurrymeals (with the staple boiled rice). along with that, we also ate buthai tava fry and crocker tava fry (koddai).

firstly, we were absolutely surprised at the size of the two types of fish ordered - it was much bigger than what we expected! and given the price, it is definitely worth it.
1. fishcurrymeals: this had boiled rice and a fish curry. thecurrywas not too spicy, and was delicious. it does have a homely feel to it, so you can have this in case you want to eat some tasty home-style mangalorean fish curry.
2. buthai tava fry and 3.crocker tava fry (koddai): as mentioned earlier, the size of the fish was greater than what we expected. the fish was absolutely tasty, with the perfect amount of spice. and the taste of coconut oil used for frying the fish was prominent in these dishes. the masala used for the koddai fry was amazing!

overall: this was a value for money, delicious, and delightful meal.

awesomeness by virtue of its simplicity along with the amazing aroma welcomes you at this little fish restaurant in the harbor area or bunder area of mangalore. the location of this is not very prominent and it's quite possible that you miss it - however, helpful locals will guide you if google maps doesn't treat you well.

the specialty of this little place is fish mini meals, fishcurryand choice of fish fry. like in most of other fish restaurants in mangalore, the price of the fish fry depends on the price of the fish for that day - hence, there is no fixed price on the menu. what will not change is the preparation which is truly special and unique to this restaurant. the fish fries are laden with red crispy spicy chutney powder which makes these "tawa fry" preparations so very unique.

the best time to visit is between 12noon and 1.30pm when the crowd is relatively less. we chose for a take-away of fish curry, tawa fries of king fish, sardine and mackerel.

the aroma of the fish shallow fried in coconut oil on a hot tava slowly to a perfect consistency to keep the fish moist from inside and crunchy from outside is evident in all fry preparations. the hot smoke emanating from the packet as soon as we open the parcel welcomed us first followed by the crispy touch of the "magical" spicy powder and then the soft and tender fish danced on our tongue. every bite tasted as if it was the first bite. the taste was unique, totally different from fish delicacies that we had ever tasted in mangalore.

the best of customer service and unique-simple-tasty food makes this place a worth visit and deserves all 5 stars.

please note: there is no convenient parking available near the restaurant which is the only drawback.

a must go place in manglore for fish lovers. it's an ordinary hotel(i mean the ambience) with great food. they serve very fresh fish. their fish fries are the best in town. they serve meals with one fishcurryand palya as common and we can chose between the fish fry we want.

a delicious fish treat.
for seafood lovers it's a perfect stop.
they just get a plate including portion of rice,a portion of vegetables dry prep, (different everyday)
a bowl of fishcurrywith a small leave of fish.

then they offer a variety of fried fish( u can ask for price as its expensive but delicious) a special thing they serve powdered fried fish batter which is so yummy to go with the fried fish as well as the rice.

they don't serve water first instead they give boiled rice water which is healthy too.
extra rice is chargeable.

finally it's a great place for afternoon or a dinner. but u may have to wait for ur turn as its always full.

hotel narayana is another legendary seafood restaurant in mangalore one must try only if they have passion and crave for typical mangalorean seafood cuisine.
this place has a very short menu fish of the season three to four verities and a fishcurryrice (meen vansu). typically they have mackrel (bangude), sardine (bootai), kingfish (anjaal), lady fish (kane), pomphret (maanji) etc.
their fish fry is serve along with the roasted spices from the tava, which tastes amazing and em drooling as i am writing. they fish fry masala is a secret and certainly will please your taste buds. it’s a little spicy for me but i have crave for spicy or extra spicy food.
if one shuld go here to taste what i mentioned above, please ignore the general hygine, service and ambience.
5 for meeting my expectations

it was a hot afternoon in mangalore and i was desperate for some good sea food. hotel narayana was highly recommended in a blog that i read and gave no second thought to visit it. located in the bunder region is a small home converted restaurant which is over 60 years old. it's an old fashioned restaurant with a rustic and sophisticated ambiance.

this place has no menu, as soon as you have occupied your table, you're served a meal and an other server brings in a platter of different variety pan fried fish from which you can choose any. the meal consists of brown rice, mango pickle, vegetable curry, fishcurryand buttermilk. while in fish platter there's king fish, pomfret, sardines etc. i took the king fish, it was served with a powder which is the fried masala.
the fishcurryis a sourcurrymade with tomato puree. the fish is soft, spicy and melts in the mouth. the podi along with it has strong flavour. the brown rice with fishcurryand fish is divine. to finish of the meal is a buttermilk with added soda.

overall delicious food for that price is, money well spent. the quality is something that lacks and is quite unhygienic. i would recommend this place if you want the taste of mangalore seafood delicacy. sometimes it's these small places that can give you sweet, unforgettable memories.

another good place in mangalore serving amazing mangalorean seafood. the place is like a small old fashioned house which is made into a restaurant. hotel narayana offers a proper mangalorean fish meal that includes a thali which consists of white rice/boiled rice, fish curry, vegetablecurryand pickle. along with the thali you are offered a wide variety of fried fish to choose from which the steward brings in a huge platter. the food is excellent and homely and extremely pocket friendly.

never ever miss this place if you are in mangalore.i visited mangalore all the way from coorg just to eat fish in this place.
the staple fishcurryalong with white or boiled rice is given with some vegetablecurryand pickle. a waiter comes around with the catch of the day including many varieties consisting of sardines, mackarels, pomfrets and king fish which varies from day to day. but the usp is that narayan’s has anjal (king fish) all year round.

the first of the many sea food places that i visited in mangalore. its a famous place and you might have to wait for some time to get a seat.
dont go looking for variety here. the only thing you get is fishcurrymeals after which the cook will come carrying a big plate containing around 4-5 types of pan fried fishes. the taste is really good and the fried masala that they give with the fish is awesome. during dinner the crowd is much less.
not much of an ambience, but that is of course overshadowed by the food.

no words to describe this place.. truly a fish lover's paradise... my advice to you guys is to just flush off all your expectations about the ambience and just go visit this place... inspite of being a goan, i've never had better fish in my life.... place is overcrowded.... always!
the best part is that they get ready fried fish in a humongously big tray at your table and you have to select your piece... you name the fish and you can see it ready fried in the tray... then they put the crumbed masala over the top of your piece... fishcurryis well flavoured... one full glass of rice water(starch) is complementary with the thali.... service cannot get better than this inspite of the crowd... and prices are dirt cheap!!!
legendary!

i am a frequent traveller to mangalore on my way to kannur from mumbai. since my home is within 2 hours from the city, i never visit restaurants in mangalore. but this time, it was a bit different as my train was at 4:45 pm and i reached mangalore at 12. my search for a simple, authentic mangalorean meal, took me to narayana. the place is nothing extraordinary and your first impression is a bit negative. but once you start tasting the rice fishcurryand anjal fry you just forget yourself in the sheer experience of having the extraordinary lunch. a must visit place for sea food lovers.............
