simple food with a simple ambience..here u will get thali which will have rice,fried fish,a gravy,pickle n buttermilk.. it sounds so simple,bt seriously its yum..the place is always crowded..!! must go place for south indian gav ka food n freshfriedyummy fish..

once you enter,they'll start serving the thali which contains either white or brown rice,sabji,salad and traditional drink.

we had taken the king fish and pomfret. both of them tasted divine.

awesomeness by virtue of its simplicity along with the amazing aroma welcomes you at this little fish restaurant in the harbor area or bunder area of mangalore. the location of this is not very prominent and it's quite possible that you miss it - however, helpful locals will guide you if google maps doesn't treat you well.

the specialty of this little place is fish mini meals, fish curry and choice of fish fry. like in most of other fish restaurants in mangalore, the price of the fish fry depends on the price of the fish for that day - hence, there is no fixed price on the menu. what will not change is the preparation which is truly special and unique to this restaurant. the fish fries are laden with red crispy spicy chutney powder which makes these "tawa fry" preparations so very unique.

the best time to visit is between 12noon and 1.30pm when the crowd is relatively less. we chose for a take-away of fish curry, tawa fries of king fish, sardine and mackerel.

the aroma of the fish shallowfriedin coconut oil on a hot tava slowly to a perfect consistency to keep the fish moist from inside and crunchy from outside is evident in all fry preparations. the hot smoke emanating from the packet as soon as we open the parcel welcomed us first followed by the crispy touch of the "magical" spicy powder and then the soft and tender fish danced on our tongue. every bite tasted as if it was the first bite. the taste was unique, totally different from fish delicacies that we had ever tasted in mangalore.

the best of customer service and unique-simple-tasty food makes this place a worth visit and deserves all 5 stars.

please note: there is no convenient parking available near the restaurant which is the only drawback.

entering the restaurant you will be asked to occupy you place. you can order fish meal to go with your fry..
freshlyfriedfried fish will be brought in a platter for you to choose (at lunch ) your choice will be served with their trade mark masala.

if you are going for dinner the fish will be more marinated and more deepfriedthan morning. no platter variety maybe less

lunch- fish is slowfriedand fresher than evening fish ..
if i want variety i go in lunch but prefer dinner for simple mackerel fry.

best fish fry in town, you have take the basic thali which comes along with rice, pallya(veg sabzi) and fish curry, fish you have to take seperately, right from bangda till promphet , all options are available, along with thefriedfish they put a powder on top of the fish which makes the taste of fish out of the world. would recommend to go during the afternoon. located near the bunder , any rickwalla will take you here. ambience is basic, but food is awesome.

they just get a plate including portion of rice,a portion of vegetables dry prep, (different everyday)
a bowl of fish curry with a small leave of fish.

then they offer a variety offriedfish( u can ask for price as its expensive but delicious) a special thing they serve powderedfriedfish batter which is so yummy to go with thefriedfish as well as the rice.

they don't serve water first instead they give boiled rice water which is healthy too.
extra rice is chargeable.

finally it's a great place for afternoon or a dinner. but u may have to wait for ur turn as its always full.

ok so first things first.
the struggle begins when you try searching for the hotel. this part is easy as the hotel is quite popular, and you can find the place without a lot of struggle. now once you have found the hotel, comes the most difficult part, especially if you are in to have lunch. and that is to find a place to sit! stuffed with as many people as would be enough to make the hotel choke (if it could breathe), you need to have patience till you find a place. but once you do find a place, the service is prompt. in no time a man comes to clean the tables, then comes a man who brings a plate with rice and one or two basic curries, and then comes the man who brings the star of the show - fishes! he brings all the variety the hotel has to offer in a single large plate, you could see and decide for yourself which one you want to have. the fishes are crispy, accompanied byfriedmasala which goes along superbly with the fish. the method of cooking is quite in contrast with what girimanjas has. the hotel property is absolutely basic, targeted at the office staff and people working nearby who come here to have lunch and go. for lunch, i would recommend not bringing your family along. but other wise, go for it.

i had been waiting to try this place out for a long time and it couldn't have happened at a better time . i entered the hidden place in bunder .

i was served a plate of hot rice and curry immediately . the waiters were a delight.

3 ambience : don't go looking for ambience and you will not be disappointed.

it was a hot afternoon in mangalore and i was desperate for some good sea food. hotel narayana was highly recommended in a blog that i read and gave no second thought to visit it. located in the bunder region is a small home converted restaurant which is over 60 years old. it's an old fashioned restaurant with a rustic and sophisticated ambiance.

this place has no menu, as soon as you have occupied your table, you're served a meal and an other server brings in a platter of different variety panfriedfish from which you can choose any. the meal consists of brown rice, mango pickle, vegetable curry, fish curry and buttermilk. while in fish platter there's king fish, pomfret, sardines etc. i took the king fish, it was served with a powder which is thefriedmasala.
the fish curry is a sour curry made with tomato puree. the fish is soft, spicy and melts in the mouth. the podi along with it has strong flavour. the brown rice with fish curry and fish is divine. to finish of the meal is a buttermilk with added soda.

overall delicious food for that price is, money well spent. the quality is something that lacks and is quite unhygienic. i would recommend this place if you want the taste of mangalore seafood delicacy. sometimes it's these small places that can give you sweet, unforgettable memories.

another good place in mangalore serving amazing mangalorean seafood. the place is like a small old fashioned house which is made into a restaurant. hotel narayana offers a proper mangalorean fish meal that includes a thali which consists of white rice/boiled rice, fish curry, vegetable curry and pickle. along with the thali you are offered a wide variety offriedfish to choose from which the steward brings in a huge platter. the food is excellent and homely and extremely pocket friendly.

hotel narayana's is one of the few places where you get the best of local cuisines. if you are in mangaluru, do stop by at this place. since the first thing you hear here is the famous bus station 'statebank', it's barely a 500m walk from this place.
if you are a food lover and don't care about anything else (ambience here), there shouldn't be any problem.
keep one thing in mind, grab your seat before 1pm. the place is open for lunch from 12 noon. you don't want to wait outside looking at people relishing on the delicious food.
the one thing served here is the fish thali.
contents: boiled brown rice/white rice (your choice), pickle, local veg. curry, local fish gravy and the best part -friedfish!
among thefriedfish, there's a choice between many. the best pick would be anjal fry. the most iconic thing about this restaurant is the salty-spicy powder which they pour over the hotfriedfish! i swear it's nothing i've had anywhere before.
to wash this down, get a glass of buttermilk, best one again.

the best king fish fry in mangalore..!!thefriedpowder along with the fish is also too good..best part here is we can select which piece v want from the big heap offriedfish the waiter gets to serve(can always select the best piece)..!! the slice of king fish is much thicker compared to the other restaurants in mangalore..but still perfectly cooked n marinated..we can feel the freshness with every piece..mmmmmm..so yummy😋😋😋the taste of angal fish fry can fetch you from miles if u eat it here..!!

visited this place today after longing to have seafood. the location of this place a little hard to find. they served us fish and rice meal. and then next came a huge wide tray offriedfish which we could choose. tried king fish and mackerel. tasted great. would definitely return. the ambience of this place isn't great to dine in.

a small house like place located in the narrow bylanes of bunder area,i was not very sure how my experience would be going by the exteriors. the menu is very limited to seafood and the meal is standard thali with an accompaniment of fish of your choice in the style available (masala fry,rava fry,tawa fry) the preparation is excellent and makes u ask for more even though you are full.don't forget to gulp down a glass of masala buttermilk before u leave.also ask for the crusted powder of thefriedfish......it is fabulously tasty!!
