this little hotel is located near the old port, bunder. a perfect manglorean hotel known for its delicious sea food.
the ambience is not that great but the dishes served here are one of a kind. tried the anjal fry (king fish) and the bangude fry (mackarel) i must say it is appetizing. the fish meal is also good. coming to the rates i found it very reasonable. one of a must try sea food restaurant in kudla.

wonderful place. typical mangalore set up. not a sea food lover; but after the fish here; guess - i will change. and the grape juice at the end is a nice touch.

best fish fry i've ever had the honour of eating. they place is hidden behind some old buildings in an old market place. and serves a simple menu of rice, fish curry, fish fry and some potato something. the fish fry was something that will make you go weak on your knees. i'm salivating as i write this. wow. can't imagine any better. please please visit this place. places like these deserve your money.

awesome seafood without any frills. nice homely atmosphere of a 'khanavali', friendly service and fantastic taste. fresh fish of the day included anjal, pomfret & mackarel. the magic powder served with fried fish has a very delicious flavor. together with warm rice stock and cool buttermilk made one perfect meal. with this and giri manjha's my seafood trip of mangalore is officially complete :)

my second stop on mangalore-zomato trail. after 2km walk i found this place. closer to gateway hotel. it was really good, fresh fish, simple and clean flavours, where fish is the hero. i ordered all that was available - anjal, bangda and boothai.
i preffered the bangda over other fish fries, it had more flavour. the fried chilly powder is good twist and does give a zing to the fish and rice. but start with a little and increase to get the balance right. in higher quantity it robs the fish of its tatste and all the fish start to taste same - like ghee roasted chilly powder.
definetly recommended - go for the fish, there is nothing else apart from fish.

i am from mumbai n currently based out of bangalore.. recently been on vacation to coastal karnataka.. had shortlisted this place.. the day we reached, mangalore had its first rain n that too heavy one.. cldnt go out for dinner.. on the way back to bangalore, i had planned a night stay in mangalore just so that we can have early lunch here next day and leave for bangalore..
when we reached bunder, my parents warned me of circumstances i would have to face if this place turned out to be a disappointment :p.. but it was the best decision.. we ordered their 2 regular meals among 3 of us.. white steamed rice, beans veggie, fish curry n pickle.. add to that we asled for 2 anjal (known by surmai or iswan as well) fry and a medium size pomfret fry..
amazinggggggggg.. out of the world.. fresh, perfectly cooked n cheap.. cant get better than this..
it was so good n cheap, we even tipped the waiter generously..

food - 10/10 - no variety, but whatever they have on offer is amazing
service - 10/10
ambience - 6/10 - definitely not a place known for ambience
value for money - 100/10 - you wont get such fresh catch n big pieces for that price anywhere in mumbai, bangalore or even mangalore i suppose

narayana main nahin khaya to kya khaya?

this quaint little restaurant is tucked close to the old port. originally it was built with the idea of serving all the workers in the port. the word spread about the delicious anjal fry and narayana was no longer a restaurant meant to service the port workers.

the fish curry rice along with the  fish fry and red chilli powder roasted in ghee is a mouth watering preparation.

you will see the bearers move around constantly in their signature orange mundu serving fish and chilli powder. their butter milk is excellent and the best preparation to wash down the meal.

when in mangalore do take time out to eat in narayana.

tucked in one small corner, this place can be easily found with the help of google maps.

if you want to experience some authentic and amazing manglorean fish, hotel narayan is where you should head to.

once you reach here, you may want to head back. the hotel is small and situated in one busy and not so great area. it may not give you the typical resturant welcome. but once you taste the food, you will forget every other aspect of this place.

the waiters don't speak any other language but their mother tongue. we called for their famous rice plate and within seconds we were offered a heap of rice with some sambhar /curry and pickle. then the waiter with a huge plate filled with fish served us fish fry with some crispy crumbs. this would be the best fish one can ever get in whole of mangalore.

the portions served are quite big. we were struggling to finish our rice plate, literally!

and the cherry on the cake was, this sumptuous meal costed below rs.500 for the two of us.

if you are willing to ignore the location, aesthetics and interiors of the hotel and won't mind sharing your table with random people, then hotel narayan is a must visit during your stay at mangalore.

old rustic place serving a no nonsense fish and rice meal. this is not a place for the fussy eaters who look for ambience, etc. you enter, you eat, you leave. the fish curry rice is a very very cheap meal, and you can buy extra pieces of fish fry. superb food, leaves you full and sleepy at the end of the meal.

located very close to mangalore bunder or mangalore's fishing port, this place was reviewed by our auto driver as 'size me chota par taste me bara' (small in size but big taste).
despite looking like a tiny joint from outside and keeping up the same dingy appearance inside, this place serves fabulous fish. you can only get veg meals and different varieties of fried fish here. the anjal and pomfret are must tries. best part is that everything is fresh. you are also served starch water (byproduct of rice) instead of regular water which is lukewarm but has the added benefit of being 'boiled water'. hence, no risks that way. the buttermilk is on the sour side and smells a bit.
