i only hope the real thing is this good.. we went here for breakfast when we visited minneapolis last time, i had some friends that went and recommended it. we went and it was about 8:30am, not too busy. first we had to find the sign, then go down into the bowels of minneapolis to the dining room. this restaurant was big, and it had many rooms, all decorated to the max with the ongoing theme of hades. it was a unique dining experience, especially for breakfast. to drive this point home for you, you will not eat your lemon ricotta pancakes in a sunny brightly colored dining room, you will eat breakfast in a room with black painted ceilings and no windows. red walls covered with horror paintings and gothic themed furniture and lighting. with some trippy music playing and if like me, watched the "snorks" on a giant projection screen. on to the food, the coffee was really good, hot and fresh, and decent strength. i ordered the lemon ricotta pancakes ($10.50) and a side of ham ($1.75). my fiance ordered the huevos rancheros ($9.95) and we shared a small portion of the mahnomin porridge ($3.75), really how often to you see porridge a menu, never, that's how often. the porridge is definitely good, it's pretty heavy in the cream and honey department but it was tasty with the cranberries and blueberries that came in it. at first i wasn't going to get the pancakes, $11 for 3 pancakes seemed a little steep to me. but, i heard they were worth it so i did, and wasn't sorry. i don't know if i was feeling defeated by the atmosphere or the porridge or what, but i seriously couldn't finish them with my ham. they will ask you to try to resist the urge to put syrup on them, i would agree i think it would ruin them, they are kind of delicate. i did however use some of the fruit preserves on the table alongside the pancakes, i think it helped cut the acidity of the lemon. my fiance liked her huevos rancheros but wasn't blown away. i tasted it and although i bet that each ingredient on it's own merit was good, i thought there was almost to much going on there together and it kind of just looked like a big mess after a few bites. then lastly, the peanut butter thing. they are very proud of their peanut butter here, it is on the table so you can try it. i personally did not like it, i think that peanut butter should taste first and foremost like peanuts. theirs, as i tasted it was way to sweet (i can see why after looking at the recipe, they sell a cook book with the recipes at the location). overall i really enjoyed the meal and would like to check it out later at night to see how it stands up.
