duke's kauai

good food,gooddrinks, and great server! the hula pie is a must try. i was full but couldn't stop eating the hula pie because it was so delicious. mmm

we sat in the upstairs portion of the restaurant. (a more casual area is downstairs with a menu of burgers, etc.) very large seating area with many tables. some may feel it is too loud and some may feel it is lively and festive. a lot of large families were present. nice view of the ocean if seated by the windows. food was solid. some people in our party really liked their meal while others thought it was slightly above average. people that ordered the fillet and fish thought they were excellent while the person that ordered the macadamia pesto dish thought itgoodbut a bit heavy. we had a person with food sensitivities/allergies. they were very accommodating and careful with her special diet. she didn't experience any illness after the meal so they must have followed through with her requests. overall, a great experience.

i spent my last dinner here before i flew back home. it's a decent place with a decent variety of food and price points. i got the burger and it was delicious, i had friends split the tacos and they raved about it. at the end of the night we got the hula pie which was so good. all of us were "just going to have a bite", which turned into eating the entire thing. one thing that did need to improve is our waitress. we would wait and wait and request an item (straws, tea, etc) and she would turn on her heels and go to get it (which could take excessively long) but we also wanted to request an additional item so she only had to make one trip....so in her haste she took multiple ones. all in all it was agoodmeal.

duke's no longer a favorite place. sadly, i'll have to take duke's off our "to-go" places. i was first introduced to this franchise in 90's. yes, it is obviously kitschy and a tourist trap. but the portions were large (along with the price) and the service was excellent. sadly, they've discovered that neither matters since people will come anyway. we waited an abnormally long time for the waiter to show up to take our order. i ordered my dad the very expensive lobster (twin) tail dinner. they were so tiny that my mom had to give him some of her pasta since he was still hungry afterwards. and the endless salad bar included with each meal has gone away. now, it's a $3 surcharge. it was fun and i hadgoodmemories, but the last one was the killer.

disappointed. duke’s is a “see and be seen” eatery. i think people like to go to duke’s as a status symbol. it’s a big restaurant with lots of tables, on a walking path adjacent to the lihue marriott, a very high end hotel. the valet parking and indoor koi pond are nice touches.

the staff was great. they were sweet and personable.

the food is nothing to write home about. my stepdaughter’s thai chicken rolls were inedible. they were soggy and gross tasting. my tomato soup wasgoodbut not fantastic. the salad bar is fresh and ample but not stellar. my husband’s opah (fish) was quitegoodbut for the price, it should be.

the room temperature of the dining area was sweltering, despite the open windows and trade winds. the heat in the ladies room almost made me pass out. we won’t be back.

nice casual place. we ate in the lower section of the restaurant and had verygoodfood at what i thought were pretty reasonable prices for a resort location.

must-do in kauai.goodseafood, unbeatable view if you're overlooking the water,goodvalue since entrees include their salad bar. the hula pie is huge but delicious. our waiter was really not very knowledgeable, but he was nice. the drinks were standard for hawaii touristy venues. the view is really what keeps people coming back.

i got the stir fry and my wife got the mahi mahi. both weregoodbut the view was better. overall we enjoyed it.

i usually don't get ribs at restaurants but i thought they lookedgoodand they were a hit! and the la pina was exceptional! if i ever come back to kauai, i'll be sure to come by!

boring. ate here twice on our trip. first night had the chicken/steak shishkabob meal, the chicken was very dry and the steak cooked to a gray without really any char or contrast in the meat. the ingredients were quality but the preparation was nothing out of the ordinary, probably just a splash or marinade of soy. the mashed potatoes were the best best part of the meal but the portion was very skimpy.
everyone raves about the salad bar but it was really quite plain, nothing at all exotic or really flavorful, some nice pineapple and melon.
next time i tried grilled fish, think they called it hawaiian or local preparation. seemed barely grilled at all but really dry and tasteless, the pineapple sauce was way too sweet and my first reaction was blame myself, why did i order this? others in my party had fish prepared firecracker style, it was good, and baked, that was reallygoodtoo.
wine list was ok, but the single glass pours were small.
the hulu pie desert was just ok.
the service ranged from overly cheery and pushy to indifferent and slow.
showy touristy kind of place, people come for the location, the food is overpriced and not well executed.

duke's is the most consistantlygoodrestaurant i have ever experienced. one would have to try one's hardest to have a bad experience there, especially when the best salad bar on the island is complimentary with most entrees. try the mac nut crusted opah!

dukes is good. this is agoodplace to go to enjoy well prepated local fish. it is always cooked well, never over cooked, and the various options available for preparations are nice. the salad bar is standard salad bar for the most part and not too exciting. this is not the place to go for that one special meal, but a place to go when you want to be sure you are getting a nice dinner and a decent kauai price.
