lobster poutine. i've been here twice before and have had mixed reviews on this place. the firsttimei went, the service was great and the food was fantastic. i love the lobster poutine! the secondtimei went, the music was unbearably loud, our waitress was unattentive and even stopped serving our table after we told her one of the mussels were smelly. she just stopped serving us! our food took forever to come out of the kitchen, we waited an hour for our entrees! it was ridiculous! our drinks took another 30-40 min to arrive as well. i think this place is a real hit and miss. i think the firsttimewe went it was on a slower night, which can account for the faster food and better service. the secondtimewas on a weekend or something, but it was a huge disappoint that food and service was so bad.

great service, i always feel super welcomed everytimei go. the food is also spectacular. always fresh oysters, happy hour menu is amazing. the crab dip is to die for, the kale hearts and brussel sprouts are also very good. beef carparccio is very tender and fresh with edamame beans which i lovee, i do however wish the bread which comes with it was a bit softer. the chefs special roll is always fresh and very good eachtimei’ve been. and the taco is probably one of the best tacos i’ve ever had!

coast is my favourite glowbal collection restaurant and the reason as to why will sound pretty silly. it is my favourite restaurant out of the collection because the hostesses are very well trained! everytimei pass by coast or before entering, the hostesses always smile and say hello every single time. every. singe. time. including whenever i am only passing by and have no intention of dining at the restaurant. yet i can never say the same for black + blue or italian kitchen, including when i have plans to dine at those restaurants! weird right? i honestly love the hostesses at coast.

i love seafood and my primary diet consists of seafood. i have been to coast twice and have ordered their lobster, salmon flatbread, salads and chowder. having had fresh nova scotia lobster in halifax, everytimei felt satisfied with the food but never amazed. it never tasted like it was worth what i was paying for or that there was a whole lot of innovation but it was fresh and what you would expect from a glowbal chain restaurant.

back when i used to work in downtown, i had the pleasure of going to coast for lunch. it was my secondtimehere, and i suggested this place because i had a wonderful experience the firsttimei went. from the atmosphere to service to food, everything was exceptionally done (the secondtimei came which is what the review is based on, the thirdtimewas not good).

i was urged by my extended family to write a review about our recent experience at coast. first of all, it’s worth mentioning there were 9 of us from our 3 families, and we have independent tastes and opinions. but not this time; there was unanimity with our reactions. to start at the beginning…

we wanted to go to blue water café where we’ve visited often and never had a bad meal, but they were unable to accommodate us, so i was tasked with finding a suitable substitute that specializes in seafood. having been told in the past that trip advisor’s reviews are unreliable because many are posted by shills, i cross-referenced theirs with urban spoon and yelp in the hope it would add credibility. coast was highly-rated by all three websites, so i booked us at there at 7:15 on a tuesday night. upon arriving we were relieved to see the restaurant was only half-full, and looked forward to an enjoyable dining experience. how wrong we were.

after ordering our meals, we waited for what seemed like a long time, and eventually one of us mentioned that to our server. at first she thought it hadn’t been that long, but after double-checking she realized it had been an hour since she’d submitted our order, and she apologized for the delay. we explained that my mom (who’s 82) was fading, and asked for her meal to be brought out first asap – she’d had ordered the sablefish special with the miso sauce. the good news is it came out shortly after we complained about the long wait. the bad news is it was mushy and unimpressive. it got sent back.

meanwhile, the rest of us were still waiting for our appetizers which finally arrived after mom’s unpalatable sablefish, approx. 75 minutes after we’d ordered. they consisted of assorted sushi rolls and salads, and were average at best. when our entrees finally arrived (at least 90 minutes after we’d ordered our meals), most of us were disappointed, and at least three of us barely ate them even though we were starving by this point.

it’s worth noting that our server did a pretty good job of addressing our comments, although it took one of us to bring the hour delay to her attention. it should have been her responsibility to be aware of timing instead of us having to complain after receiving no food for an hour, not even bread – apparently you have to buy the bread at coast. after she was made aware of the problem, someone in a higher position should have come to our table to inquire and attend to us immediately. that didn't happen for at least another 15 minutes from thetimewe complained.

a man, i assume a manager, came to our table, and his manner was somewhat cordial, yet bordered on aloof, as if the visit to our table was an unwelcome obligation, rather than an opportunity to make things right. shortly after his visit, a woman, possibly an asst. manager, was dispatched to our table, and she tried to make amends by offering an extra bottle of wine and an assortment of free desserts. we told her we didn’t want more wine or desserts - frankly, by thattimewe just wanted to get the hell out of there - but she insisted and wouldn't take no for an answer, so we accepted the desserts, which by the way were fine.

she also suggested we let her know how many of us didn’t like our meals, and that they would deduct those from the bill. that sounds reasonable, but in our experiences, high end restaurants don’t delegate that responsibility to the customer; they take charge of the situation themselves, usually offering to tear up the bill, or cut it by 50%, etc.

to make a long story short, by the server’s own admission, there was no excuse for the inordinate length oftimeit took to get our meals - she grudgingly admitted that in the 1-1/2 years she’d been working there she’d never seen this kind of overall dysfunction, and blamed it on the chef was having an off night.

bottom line: some of food was disappointing, the rest was average, and the management’s professionalism was sorely lacking.

i would not recommend this restaurant to anyone, that is, unless they’re masochistic and enjoy paying top dollar for sub-par food in an establishment where the management barely conceal the idea they're doing you a favour by letting you eat there.

this place is a hustling, bustling seafood-first restaurant with an absolutely gorgeous mile-high cocktail bar – we can see why it is featured right up at the front of the restaurant. coast is a place to see and be seen at. it’s very popular, and maybe that is why several officers from the vpd gang squad did a walk-through in the middle of our meal. yeah – haven’t seen that before, but at least bullets didn’t fly and we didn’t need to duck under a table. we were seated at the crossroads of the kitchen and the bar, and it was still in the middle of primetimewhen we got there, so it was a busy place. if you want to visit coast on a first date, or just like to be able to hear yourself think, you may want to try and get seated upstairs, above the melee. that said, the service was good, professional and not rushed. we decided

cocktail hour is a goodtimeto go and try out their food for a cheaper price than usual. then you can decide if it’s a restaurant worth the splurge. i would definitely go back for the lobster poutine. it’s the epitome of fine comfort food (although i do wish there was a dot of caviar to really finish it off)...

nothing special. took a gf there for her birthday. that was my first and lasttimeat coast. food is pretty costly but taken that its all fresh it was easy to bite. also their bar has a huge selection of liquor. you're paying for the experience more so then the food itself i found. if you're ok with that then do it up, but i don't think i'll be back. my total bill was just over $400 for the 2 of us. 2 appies, 2 entrees, 4 drinks. pretty pricey, and it wasn't the most expensive items on the menu. a little too rich for my blood.

private function in the upstairs room isn't so private!!!! loud & loud & loud. what a disappointment! i have been at coast on several occasions with some friends but thistimei was absolutely disappointed to have held my dinner/presentation event in their private room upstairs for 25 people. there are several aspects of the evening that were such a letdown especially when your minimum spend is $3000. starting with the level of noise outside the room i.e. loud music & people and as the night went on it got progressively unbearable! the food was delicious but the new menu appeared to look pretty lean with the grated coleslaw or root vegetables as displayed with the beef option. the room really fits 20 people, do not try to squeeze in more people. finally, the service was on the slow side...i understand they did not want to disturb us but it was much slower than anticipated. i would not recommend booking your private function in the "private rooms...more like semi-private" if you have a presentation...there are by far many more restaurants in town with a true private area with better minimum spend.

3rdtimewasn't a charm. i went to coast 3 times in one week i was so impressed by the service their buck a shuck the first 2 visits with my friends, i had to bring my mom and grandmother. the 3rd visit i was extremely disappointed as the oysters were shucked so badly they looked like they went through a tree grinder on top of that i had asked the server to have the bar tender (who shucks oysters as well as bar tends) be more careful and that was ignored. we ordered 4 dozen and each dozen came separately with 20-40 min breaks in between and we had also ordered appies which we wanted after all the oysters, the last dozen we had to cancel because the service was so slow.

for the 3 visits during the canada day week we spent over $500, now that may not be a lot to some people but when you're spending that kind of money on food at a "fancy" restaurant plating and preparation needs to be on point. i don't only say this as a consumer but i also say this as someone who worked in a kitchen for over 3 years

i had sent an e-mail to coast, we'll see if they respond!!

oysters are fantastic, but that's about it.. i came here a week ago for dinner, and it was a very busy night. the interior was very clean, spacious, and nicely decorated. service was so-so. however, it was extremely loud (on second floor), and our table could barely carry on a conversation without having to repeat ourselves over and over.

as for the food, it was lousy. the food took a longtimeto come (and so did our bills) i ordered salmon two ways, and one piece of the salmon was dry, while the other piece was okay. with some sauce, and one croquette on the side, the dish was $32. it was way overpriced for the quality and portion. nothing special about it.

the only thing worth praising here are the oysters during the "buck a shuck" hours. they're generally fresh and delicious. unfortunately, that's about it.

overall, the food is a hit or a miss and the quality is inconsistent. i may possibly go back for oysters, but definitely not for anything else.

not worth the price. it was my spouse's birthday and our firsttimetrying coast, and i was rather unimpressed with the overall experience.

our server was very nice, but service is way too slow. the evening started off well, we were seated in an area that is off to the right of the restaurant, and mid way through our meal they did a whole bunch of furniture rearrangement and placed a large party in that section when really they should have been placed in a more secluded section (the party guests were up and walking around). my spouse and i were the only two people in that section that was not part of the party - super awkward. not only that, our server had to take care of that entire party so naturally, our service became a lot slower. i don't think that was fair to our server; for such a large party, they should have put a few more staff there.

the food was alright, but not worth the price! servers are friendly, but that is not enough to convince me to return. go to joe fortes if you want great seafood, its only down the street on thurlow off robson.

overpriced. the food was decent but overpriced. the waiter was extremely friendly but the food took a very longtimeto arrive. i understand it was a busy night, but maybe it'stimeto consider having less tables if the kitchen isn't able to keep up with orders.
