a donut shop that homer simpson would be proud of - if he was a vegan hipster from vancouver. a little on the more pricey range for a half dozen, but the donuts always taste freshly baked. so trust me when i say that not only are they worth the price and trip to go get them, you're also not going to want to leave with just one donut in hand. the flavour combinations they have are so quirky, your initial thought would be, "does that even work on a donut?" it does. their special donut on this particular visit was a "rootbeer float" flavoured donut (yes, i said that right). i shared this with a friend and we were amazed how they made it taste like you were literally drinking the exact thing! the cakey donut had a hint of the rootbeer essence and little marshmellow toppings tasted like vanilla ice cream on top of the float. i recommend trying the honey parmesan for any sweet and salty lovers, and the london fog stuffie tastes just like my favorite drink from starbucks. the main reason for me to try this place was the curiousity behind the canadian whisky bacon donut .. and man, it was as good as i have imagined. a good balance with the sweetness of the maple glaze and the saltiness of the little chopped bits of double smoked bacon on top. you can't really taste the whisky aspect of it alcohol-wise, rather, it adds to the sweetness and makes the flavor wholesome.

pictured: triple chocolate threat, salted caramel, london fog, earl grey, honey parmesan, rootbeer float - coconut topping is german cake and pink glaze is strawberry love

expensive but tasty donuts for those treat yo self kind of days. the staff behind the counter are friendly and the space is a nice place to sit, chat, and enjoy. their monthly flavors are fun; my favorite are the stuffies. the tea sodas are tasty, i had earl grey to go with my london fog stuffie donut.

cartems donuterie helped to fuel the artisan donut trend in vancouver. they have come a long way from their humble location on hastings street. that location has since been shut down and they now have 3 store fronts throughout vancouver (downtown, kits & main street). this post is about the downtown vancouver location on west pender street. they have been cranking out amazing dougnuts since approximately 2011.

recommended this place time and time again to visiting friends, it' a cheat day staple in any vancouver vegans life! there are rotating flavours but always a vegan and/or gluten free option (yay), nothing really can beat coffee and a donut.

really good donuts! we tried the classic which looked and tasted different than regular glazed donut would. their donuts don't taste commercial and you can tell the dough is made from scratch. loved the unique taste of the glaze. service was friendly. a bit pricey though!

always love cartem's donuts. i think it's mainly due to the texture of the donuts feeling substantial. it's also well-flavoured! what i don't quite like is the price :(

shockingly bad service.

i paid to have a box of donuts with custom icing on them as part of a massive scavenger hunt i was doing.

the manager said this was no problem, i went in and paid for them, gave a nice tip and they even pointed at the box of donuts on the side and told me they were 'ready to go'. stupid me, i didn't check them and later found out they'd lied to my face and they were not custom iced, they were just regular donuts.

their excuse was that they were "too busy to do it", yet had plenty of time to lie to my face telling me they were done and then take my money. i'll never come back to this place.

what i ate: 2 dozen donuts (assorted – the classic, vanilla bean, maple walnut, salted caramel etc.). (no not really, i had the coconut one). overall, i’m not the biggest fan of donuts. i find cartems’ donuts to be on the oilier side. also they are very cake like in texture which i’m not a fan of. but this is all personal preference of course!

the doughnuts here are really fresh, as they are made throughout the day. the flavours are really unique, and they sometimes have samples available to try. they also have vegan and gluten free options. i had the special - the apricot doughnut with cream cheese icing, and it was so soft and delicious. like a cloud. will definitely be back to try more flavours !

these are some of the best donuts i have ever had. the apricot cheesecake special this month is amazing. light and fluffy, with sweet and sticky frosting. delish!

cartems is my go to place for a vegan donut!! i love the general atmosphere of the place and also the fact that they've been having open mic sessions lately. i'd definitely recommend the earl grey or matcha flavour donut (or any other). either way, i'm a fan.

when i first heard that there was a unique donut shop opening up downtown, it instantly reminded me of voodoo donuts in portland! i recall there being tons upon tons of donuts to choose from and all at a reasonable price so i had high hopes for here! as soon as i stepped in and saw the price though….damn

it's hard to find a bad doughnut these days with every city filled with specialty doughnut shops.  cartems was some of the best i've ever had probably because of the whiskey bacon on top of mine.  i find that adding bacon to many things is really never a bad thing.  the four of us tried three doughnuts all together- the canadian whiskey bacon, the salted caramel, and the classic.  my husband and i each had a coffee to pair with our doughnut.  we should have got another doughnut because our boys tried to eat ours, too.  trying to get two boys to share one doughnut was a bad idea.  but you live and you learn.  it's always fun and tasty trying the different foods when you're traveling and vancouver is filled with awesome food!
