the first, and last, time that we visited west juliett was with m and i was suitably impressed so was happy to return. being a sunny long weekend morning, there was quite a crowd waiting for tables but luckily, we only had to wait about 20 mins before we were seated and presented with the menu. once again, the listing of many fresh and tasty dishes made ordering quite hard. eventually i opted for the eggs and lentil dish. usually it comes with olive oil fried eggs but i wasn't in the mood for that so, inspired by my recent date with a barista (who assured me that hospitality are normally happy to alter dishes, as long as you aren't obnoxious about it), i asked for the eggs to be poached instead and the kitchen happily obliged. to tie me over until my meal arrived, i sipped on a blueberry basil yoghurt smoothie, which was as delicious as it sounds and creamy enough to keep the hunger pangs at bay.

eventually our dishes arrived: w's healthy colourful salad, and my less-healthy (but still pretty healthy) eggs. the braised lentils made eating it with a knife and fork a bit tricky, akin to picking up rice with chopsticks (i'll be honest: i use a spoon at home) and i felt like i was getting a measly amount of food with every bite - making the dish feel somewhat unsatisfying. this was especially the case given all the good stuff was buried under a layer of rocket, which whilst adding to the healthiness of the dish, didn't contribute much in the way of taste and could have been done away with. i am clearly not a fan of salad for the sake of salad - but can you really call chucking one variety of leaf onto a plate a 'salad'? same with the sprinkling of parmesan, which was stingy such that you couldn't really taste it. this now sounds like a very scathing review, but i enjoyed my smoothie and w's salad was apparently good - i just wouldn't order my dish again but i'd still return for a third visit.

the atmosphere was good. my friend's sandwich with pork was really good. however my salad was not too good, maybe because i'm not vegetarian and a meat lover. so i cannot handle that so well. the chips was nice too and very unusual tasty! good!

emerging in 2013, west juliett café follows in the footsteps of trailblazing marrickville cafe, cornersmith. there are plenty of greens on the plates, and a connection to hand-making in their offerings, including pastries and tempting baked goods. the deep verandah, supplemented by a large, airy dining room, gives it a real community centre feel, and locals flock to this grand, old corner store in droves.my partner heads straight for the breakfast menu hero – olive oil fried eggs ($18.90) with morcilla and braised lentils – throwing in an additional side of bacon ($4.90), as men are wont to do.i steal forkfuls of perfectly braised lentils from his plate, wishing i’d added them as a side to my own mushrooms on toast ($15.90) with poached egg ($2.50). both dishes are come garlanded with greens – rocket and cress – with the mushooms further enhanced with caraway seeds, burnt onions and a minimal amount of greek kasseri cheese. as another gesture to healthy eating, they’re presented with...

been here a couple of times now, each time it's getting better than the previous visit.  the coffee is great, which is always a must for a good cafe.  they do food really well here, i fell in love with the juliett salad!  the service is good but its the owner who makes you feel really welcomed.  if you haven't already been here, it's worth checking out.

dropped in while in the area to try one of the famous cookies. the place was heaving for a monday! grabbed the chocolate and pink salt ($4) that has a gooey chocolate bottom and crunchy top. also grabbed the peanut butter one ($3.50) that is soft and pleasant but needs more peanut crunch throughout.

beautiful breakfast on a rainy sydney morning.. i was seated immediately and asked if i wanted coffee. coffee made to perfection! i had the toast with cress and dukkah eggs and added bacon (this dish normally comes with avo and fetta) - bread was beautiful as was the whole dish. only complaint is it needed salt which i could easily add but besides that it was delish. service quick and friendly too.

out of the many cafes i have been to in sydney, west juliett is by far the cafe food i was least impressed with.

firstly, i ordered a large callebaut hot chocolate, which arrived as a regular. the waitress politely apologised and quickly rectified the error, but the bill reflected 2 hot chocolates. the hot chocolate itself tasted nothing special.

for the main, i ordered a haloumi cheese on a miche sandwich. the grilled haloumi was overly hard and salty which made it almost inedible. the miche bread was cold and dry. the chips we ordered as a side did not taste good, plus they looked like they had been re-fried multiple times.

lastly, i also did not think it was hygienic for the waitresses to handle plates of food for customers right after picking up dog bowls (even though i liked the fact that west juliett provides them for pups).

a few months ago, j and i stayed with friends who live in marrickville, sydney, and they took us to brunch at a cafe down the road called west juliett. by the time we go there, around 11am on a saturday morning, the place was packed and there was already a list at the door for tables. we put our name down and waited. meanwhile, i had a look inside to find simple decor – timber floorboards and whitewashed walls. it is a wide area filled with tables, cakes and pastries at the front counter (which were nearly all sold out) and plenty of wait staff. the space used to be hold an old corner store which gives it a charming quiet neighbourhood feel.

olive oil used to scramble eggs.   well trained staff, with a good demeanour, approaching and chatting with customers.   sited on a not so noisy corner of an otherwise busy suburb. everyone gets a boisterous hello on entering through a sort of automated closing door for an entrance.   a semi-industrail interior with no frills, but more than balanced with the warmth inside and of the staff.     bar drinks are labelled "medicine". i say do check this out for the wonderful difference in food and experience.     it is not just another modern australian brunch, lunch and breakfast place  - it shows delightful touches of greek, fusion and creativity.   efficient delivery after you order.   you can sit by the windows and watch a certain corner of marrickville go by.   if you choose outdoor pavement tables, you realise that the area is rather residential, which some firmly say is more enmore than marrick's.

one of our locals and always has great food and usually excellent staff! a bit of a let down recently with a rather unhelpful and green waitress on a weekday morning- certainly not the west juliett we know and love! choc chip pink salt cookies are a cult favourite!

season your appetite with a delightful brunch at one of the local favourite cafes that is now open on sundays too. add a little sweetness with the french toast complimented with a generous serving of salted caramel, ricotta plus season fruits. balance with healthy plates of green including the grilled chicken burger and the flavoursome salad of rocket, fried egg, avo and mushrooms.

it was a lovely sunny day with a refreshing breeze so we opted for the outside tables. the chicken salad was well done with gorgeous crispy skin on a succulent maryland piece with bits of charred corn and fresh snowpeas, seasoned with an aioli kick. boy had the pulled pork salad complemented by scatterings of apple. but my favourite was actually their chocolate chip cookie! dayum. what a cookie. the mother of all cookies. huge, chocolatey with salt sprinkled on top. it was the salt's fault that now i'm in love with this cookie
