meh. decor is kind of neat, but i've been 3-4 times maybe twice a year for food (been to shows they have which are fun with just beers), but i don't get the food-hype..
ive gone recently again, and like times before-eachtimehoping to like it...if anything because it's in a great location, but the hot dogs themselves are underwhelming.
touring bands and local 'celebs' rave about it and i don't..get it.

ripped torn seats, uneven tables, dirty tables, full garbages all the time, bathrooms a bit scary, once the volume on the sound system was so loud (no band middle of the day) it actually hurt my ears and i like music!

the bun is soggy or dry and stale, and white - how about a whole wheat option? no?
the retro style is trendy, but i think that is all this place has going for it.... people think they fit in hipster style, go ahead.
im vegetarian, so i always have the 'not dog' with cheese (not even melted, had to ask for it to be melted, went back in a microwave wtf) and i tried space cheese once, even grosser.
yam fries are oily and soggy and disgusting. i left them till last to eat and the fat and oil around them began to harden to a lard-like mess..eww.
i know it's not fine dining-i get that but the place has gone downhill in cleanliness, service and can spruce it up a bit to make it good to eat in instead of going to a place you hear being fun and good and it wasn't.
sub-par.. big cheese is way better (poutinery down 17th a bit more), and won't go back to t dog unless a band is playing again and will just drink a red stripe.
price set too high for shitty food, and dirty.
sorry t-dog, i wanna like you, gave you enough chances.
just my 3 cents.

disappointed.. to be honest i'm not sure what the fuss is all about. i've been three times, and eachtimehoping to like it...if anything because it's in a great location with a cool name, but the hot dogs themselves are underwhelming.

yes, they're massive, but 80% bun, and the toppings while good mostly end up falling off while trying to eat it. my friend and i each had a chill cheese dog and a drink and it was almost 20 bucks!

an awesome dog. tubby dog is an interesting place with a great take on what a hot dog should be. no dried up buns and over steamed cheap hotdogs to be had at this place.

the décor is something else entirely. despite the fact the menu is right there in front of you as you walk in, it's easy to be distracted by all the decorative non sequiturs. from old school posters to pink sneakers under glass to old cartoons playing on the masonry wall at the back.

the menu took me aback. i've seen hotdogs served in a variety of ways, and had pretty much sworn the things off as soggy spawns of the devil, never to be consumed again. some friends had recently raved about tubby dog though, and i figured what the hell.

so my wife and i headed down there, and i nearly had to drag the poor lass home. these are not just hot dogs. these are not hot dogs you pick up and eat with your hands.

these things are culinary monsters topped in some seriously creative ways. me, i had the a-bomb with a grilled beef dog. relish, ketchup, mustard, chilli, cheese, chips and more cheese. and then had them add in hot peppers because i might as well go out in style.

this was probably the firsttimein history i've been full after a hotdog.

these aren't your regular dogs, these are tubby dogs served up by some stylin urban dawgs ;)

you want a loaded up hot dog, no fuss, no chit chat, this is your place.
there's a good amount of options and the food, though greasy, is exactly what you would expect from a place that describes itself as "tubby."
the atmosphere is pretty good too. nice retro diner feel (with the grunginess to match the grease) with a cool selection of games (even tetris!). lots of interesting stuff to look at on the walls too.

at first, i thought the place was awesome. i wanted to bring some of my friends there to beat some high scores and pig out! however, it was closed the nexttimewe went due to a private event. fair enough, they said they may be closed for events on their website.

the nexttimewe tried to go i called ahead only to get hung up on by an employee. i asked "are you hosting any special events or are you open?" okay, maybe i sounded rude or stupid.
so i get my husband to call and he gets, "yeah, we host events sometimes" and hung up on as well.
in his words "they insulted me, they insulted my wife, i'm not giving them my money."

considering it's a place that serves non-gourmet, heart disease inducing food, maybe we shouldn't have expected the most polite phone call.

tl:dr
great place, good junk food, awful customer service.

walked by this place a hundred times, firsttimei have been there though, i like a good hot dog especially on a hot evening with not much to do, there were 4 of us, and there was a fairly good sized line up , but still only took about 10 minutes to get to the front to order, and about 15 minutes to get the order, not to bad considering the line up, the place is rather worn and smokey, but it kind of fit the atmosphere , i like the fact they cook the dogs on a griddle rather then on rollers or steamed, they had a very nice flavour, i had the harlo which had lots of bacon and cheese, they weren't cheap, but i would assume a 17th avenue street front location does not come cheap and they probably have to pay through the nose for rent and at 8.50 plus for a dog they still have to sell a lot of them, i enjoyed it and will certainly be back.

tubby dog is awesome. i'm not a huge fan of hot dogs, personally. but they do it well and make stuff interesting. i generally mostly come here for live music, and it has a great atmosphere and is always a fun time. will always give me nostalgia everytimei come here.

kinda disappointed to be honest. maybe it was just an off night but took a friend here for the firsttimeand everything was just horrible the hot dogs fell apart right away, no flavour at all. had to actually add way more mustard and ketchup just to eat it.

we agreed that a .75 cent ikea hot dog was just as good as the $8.25 tubbydog

i saw a classic hot dog at orange julius as we left chinook center, and i couldn't stop thinking about it as i drove home. needed to stop here. perfect hot dog. mine had ketchup, mustard, cheddar, and chopped onion. the bun was delicious. i finished 4x faster than my girlfriend, so i hadtimeto play arcade tetris while she finished.

love the food, but i do agree it is a bit overpriced for what you get. love the slaw dog, it's a fantastic, greasy, mountain of food for when you're craving that sort of thing. the one true complaint i have is that i find if you're not their usual type of clientele (let's be honest, this is 17th ave, hipster central) they tend to be quite rude or just absent. the firsttimei went there i stood there with my boyfriend to ask a question, the place was empty, and the two guys behind the counter completely ignored us for about 5 minutes until we decided to forgo the question, and we had to ask if we could order. a guy came in while we were eating, jean vest, tattoos, toque, and was greeted warmly and taken care of right away. now when we want food there we just order it go and don't expect any service. but they do make a mean hotdog.

my sister-in-law spends quite a bit oftimedrinking beers and hanging out at tubby dog.  so, it was only natural for her to have her work going-away party there. plus, she is friends with the owner. inside and at night, it’s quite a cool place to hang out. old school arcades line the walls.  a dj played that night as well.

i'm rating it a 1 so do i need to say more? there was a line up at the door half an hour before and 20 minutes after the opening time. staff kept glancing out during thistimeso they knew we were out there. once entering they had a masterpiece of a hot dog posted on the wall.  despite having a build your own option on the menu when i asked if i could have that they just bluntly said "no you can't."  the hot dog i ended up getting was.maybe worth $2.00 but i payed $6.00 and i could have made better at home myself. suffices to say they don't get my stamp of recommendation even after being seen on gotta eat here.

always randomly closed. went here for the firsttime2 years ago and been back a few times since. the food is great.

however, 3 times i have now been there in the past 2 years and it has been closed when it says on the website it's open. today we went and waited till 11:40 am and it still wasn't open, so we just left. really needs to be more reliable or provide updated information on the website regarding later opening times/days when they are closed.

massive hot dogs and kitchy 60s decor. heard about tubby dog some years ago but this was my first visit. the busy but friendly staff were happy to answer questions and make recommendations for the uninitiated. my slaw dog was a meal in itself, with a tasty cabbage slaw, chili and cheese on the large hot dog. the 50s/60s hollywood memorabilia make for a fun atmosphere. maybe nexttimei visit i will be brave enough to try their infamous pbj dog with captain crunch cereal!
