i like it. but why not go to costco ($1.50 incl. pop) and bring pb&j? lawl. i kid i kid... well, sorta. this is a funkyplaceto be. the people that work there sing while they work and they make hot dogs very professionally. they truly love their work and you'll respect what they do. it's a work of art. no i'm not being cynical or sarcastic at this very moment.

the hot dog was good but i don't see the same hype as japadog in vancouver. i don't think it's as original. it's definitely cool for a calgary joint but it's not that awesome. you do get your money's worth @ $7 a hot dog because it's friggin huge.

meh. decor is kind of neat, but i've been 3-4 times maybe twice a year for food (been to shows they have which are fun with just beers), but i don't get the food-hype..
ive gone recently again, and like times before-each time hoping to like it...if anything because it's in a great location, but the hot dogs themselves are underwhelming.
touring bands and local 'celebs' rave about it and i don't..get it.

ripped torn seats, uneven tables, dirty tables, full garbages all the time, bathrooms a bit scary, once the volume on the sound system was so loud (no band middle of the day) it actually hurt my ears and i like music!

the bun is soggy or dry and stale, and white - how about a whole wheat option? no?
the retro style is trendy, but i think that is all thisplacehas going for it.... people think they fit in hipster style, go ahead.
im vegetarian, so i always have the 'not dog' with cheese (not even melted, had to ask for it to be melted, went back in a microwave wtf) and i tried space cheese once, even grosser.
yam fries are oily and soggy and disgusting. i left them till last to eat and the fat and oil around them began to harden to a lard-like mess..eww.
i know it's not fine dining-i get that but theplacehas gone downhill in cleanliness, service and can spruce it up a bit to make it good to eat in instead of going to aplaceyou hear being fun and good and it wasn't.
sub-par.. big cheese is way better (poutinery down 17th a bit more), and won't go back to t dog unless a band is playing again and will just drink a red stripe.
price set too high for shitty food, and dirty.
sorry t-dog, i wanna like you, gave you enough chances.
just my 3 cents.

a staple on 17th ave, thisplacehas survived a lot of businesses coming and going the red mile.  a simple concept, hot dogs!  they offer unique flavours and takes, which is novel.  if you can stand not getting a stomach ache on some of their choices, they are definitely different...

retro vintage diner look, also featuring video games and movie screenings, this is definitely a community hot spot and will be around for a long time.

good hotdogs for after the bar. the hotdogs at tubby dog are delicious and the best in calgary. sure you may pay more for one hotdog but the size explains the higher price. i can barely finish one hotdog. it's a greatplacewhen you get out of a club or bar and want something to eat. sure there is outside vendors selling hotdogs but tubby dog is amazing. the decor and feel is retro and awesome. i love going and recommend it.

surprize! this is one for the ages. just a great hot dogplacewith an unusual selection. also popular with punk rockers and millionaires, the occasional billionaire and regular working stiffs whom appreciate great flavor and no pretensions. if you are between 5 and 95 years old you will not be disappointed. go for the cheetah if are a tubby virgin.

an awesome dog. tubby dog is an interestingplacewith a great take on what a hot dog should be. no dried up buns and over steamed cheap hotdogs to be had at this place.

the décor is something else entirely. despite the fact the menu is right there in front of you as you walk in, it's easy to be distracted by all the decorative non sequiturs. from old school posters to pink sneakers under glass to old cartoons playing on the masonry wall at the back.

the menu took me aback. i've seen hotdogs served in a variety of ways, and had pretty much sworn the things off as soggy spawns of the devil, never to be consumed again. some friends had recently raved about tubby dog though, and i figured what the hell.

so my wife and i headed down there, and i nearly had to drag the poor lass home. these are not just hot dogs. these are not hot dogs you pick up and eat with your hands.

these things are culinary monsters topped in some seriously creative ways. me, i had the a-bomb with a grilled beef dog. relish, ketchup, mustard, chilli, cheese, chips and more cheese. and then had them add in hot peppers because i might as well go out in style.

this was probably the first time in history i've been full after a hotdog.

these aren't your regular dogs, these are tubby dogs served up by some stylin urban dawgs ;)

you want a loaded up hot dog, no fuss, no chit chat, this is your place.
there's a good amount of options and the food, though greasy, is exactly what you would expect from aplacethat describes itself as "tubby."
the atmosphere is pretty good too. nice retro diner feel (with the grunginess to match the grease) with a cool selection of games (even tetris!). lots of interesting stuff to look at on the walls too.

at first, i thought theplacewas awesome. i wanted to bring some of my friends there to beat some high scores and pig out! however, it was closed the next time we went due to a private event. fair enough, they said they may be closed for events on their website.

the next time we tried to go i called ahead only to get hung up on by an employee. i asked "are you hosting any special events or are you open?" okay, maybe i sounded rude or stupid.
so i get my husband to call and he gets, "yeah, we host events sometimes" and hung up on as well.
in his words "they insulted me, they insulted my wife, i'm not giving them my money."

considering it's aplacethat serves non-gourmet, heart disease inducing food, maybe we shouldn't have expected the most polite phone call.

tl:dr
great place, good junk food, awful customer service.

walked by thisplacea hundred times, first time i have been there though, i like a good hot dog especially on a hot evening with not much to do, there were 4 of us, and there was a fairly good sized line up , but still only took about 10 minutes to get to the front to order, and about 15 minutes to get the order, not to bad considering the line up, theplaceis rather worn and smokey, but it kind of fit the atmosphere , i like the fact they cook the dogs on a griddle rather then on rollers or steamed, they had a very nice flavour, i had the harlo which had lots of bacon and cheese, they weren't cheap, but i would assume a 17th avenue street front location does not come cheap and they probably have to pay through the nose for rent and at 8.50 plus for a dog they still have to sell a lot of them, i enjoyed it and will certainly be back.

great spot for a bite to eat! we came here to play pacman on a thursday night. theplacewasn't packed but it was steady. i had the slaw dog and i really liked it! i thought the cole slaw would taste weird with the chili but they went together perfectly. i was also expecting the coleslaw to be something out of a bucket from the grocery store but it definitely tasted homemade. so i was impressed! it was very messy (of course) but i found the easiest way of eating it was to gently cut it into 4 small sections and then eat each of those with my hands. i barely spilled any of the toppings but i had to be super careful. my fiancé had the yogi bear and he liked it a lot. we also shared the t-rings and they were gigantic and tasted good but we both thought the batter could use a bit of seasoning. the service was excellent, there were two guys working and they were both very nice and the food was ready fast. this page says that tubby dog is cash only but we paid with visa so they accept cards.

the firstplacei went to when checking out 17th ave, a niceplacefor a quick meal, and a fairly decent hang out spot if you're interested in arcade games.

while i was there i got the a-bomb, at first it can be intimidating but once you get into it, it's not really that bad to get into it. in my opinion, i found it hard to distinguish the taste, you have mayo, mustard, and cheese battling each other, and also with it you have chips and real bacon bits on it, the sad reality you'll probably find them falling off the hotdog.

in a few words a messy delight

tubby dog is a calgary must eat joint. i've never been disappointed and its a greatplacefor a first date. how you approach one of these massive, loaded, messy dogs is how you approach life. do you grab it by both hands and dive in, hoping you grabbed enough napkins? or do you use a knife and fork and try to not make  mess? you can get a wide variety of toppings, and the t-rings are amazing.
