meh. decor is kind of neat, but i've been 3-4 times maybe twice a year for food (been to shows they have which are fun with just beers), but i don't get the food-hype..
ive gone recently again, and like times before-each time hoping to like it...if anything because it's in a great location, but the hot dogs themselves are underwhelming.
touring bands and local 'celebs' rave about it and i don't..get it.

ripped torn seats, uneven tables, dirty tables, full garbages all the time, bathrooms a bit scary, once the volume on the sound system was so loud (no band middle of the day) it actually hurt my ears and i like music!

the bun is soggy or dry and stale, and white - how about a whole wheat option? no?
the retro style is trendy, but i think that is all this place has going for it.... people think they fit in hipster style, go ahead.
im vegetarian, so i always have the 'not dog' withcheese(not even melted, had to ask for it to be melted, went back in a microwave wtf) and i tried spacecheeseonce, even grosser.
yam fries are oily and soggy and disgusting. i left them till last to eat and the fat and oil around them began to harden to a lard-like mess..eww.
i know it's not fine dining-i get that but the place has gone downhill in cleanliness, service and can spruce it up a bit to make it good to eat in instead of going to a place you hear being fun and good and it wasn't.
sub-par.. bigcheeseis way better (poutinery down 17th a bit more), and won't go back to t dog unless a band is playing again and will just drink a red stripe.
price set too high for shitty food, and dirty.
sorry t-dog, i wanna like you, gave you enough chances.
just my 3 cents.

disappointed.. to be honest i'm not sure what the fuss is all about. i've been three times, and each time hoping to like it...if anything because it's in a great location with a cool name, but the hot dogs themselves are underwhelming.

yes, they're massive, but 80% bun, and the toppings while good mostly end up falling off while trying to eat it. my friend and i each had a chillcheesedog and a drink and it was almost 20 bucks!

last friday, my boyfriend took me downtown. we had tubby hotdog for lunch. tubby hotdog is a small fast food restaurant. it is located at 17 ave southwest calgary. it sells hotdogs and some beers. we arrived the restaurant around 12 pm. the restaurant was very busy and had a line up at the front desk. but, the line moved fast. after waiting for 5 mins, we began to order our food. i had the japanese style sumo, which includes japanese mayo, seaweed salad, wasabi, pickled ginger, lightly toasted sesame seeds. my boyfriend had ordered tubby dog, which made with homemade chili, bacon, cheese, onions, mustard. also, we had poutine and pop drink to share. after that, we waited for our food for the while. the hot dogs were very well cooked. the taste of them was very different from each other. sumo hot dog was japanese hot dog. classic tubby hot dog was like chilicheesehot dog. they were all in the huge portion. the poutine was decent, but nothing excited. the prices of food were a little bit expensive. both hot dogs were $8.50. the poutine was $7.50. the fountain drink was $3,00. in summary, tubbydog was decent fast food restaurant.

the first place i went to when checking out 17th ave, a nice place for a quick meal, and a fairly decent hang out spot if you're interested in arcade games.

while i was there i got the a-bomb, at first it can be intimidating but once you get into it, it's not really that bad to get into it. in my opinion, i found it hard to distinguish the taste, you have mayo, mustard, andcheesebattling each other, and also with it you have chips and real bacon bits on it, the sad reality you'll probably find them falling off the hotdog.

in a few words a messy delight

for $7.75, the tubby dog is legendary. a huge 1/3 lb hot dog buried in chili, cheeseand onion. a huge portion of chips (aka fries) is $5 and they are the best chips i have had in calgary since leaving england 10 years ago; unbelievable flavor and memories of english chips.
i had a pickled egg too, that was another british novelty and memory.
however the thing that shocked me was the sign that said "orders of $50 will be subject to a mandatory 18% gratuity". wth? i have never seen anything like this in my 10 years in this city (or anywhere else for that matter). don't they want our money? do they want to discourage us? as it's basically a take-out burger joint with no waitress service why on earth do they think they can ask for a huge tip like that? 5% might be reasonable, but 18%?! and btw, three of us spent $33 so it's easy to get up to that magical $50 with a party of 5 or 6, so my advice would be to split the order into 2 x 3 to spite them or ... simply go somewhere else.
my wife and kid felt the place was a bit dirty and the bathrooms were grungy, but i explained that hipsters live like that ;-)
in summary, amazing hot dogs and fries, and a shocking 18% tip for a $50 order.

i strongly recommend tubby dog for anyone who loves a blast from the past. tubby dogs environment is fitted with pinball machines and vintage foods like spraycheesein a can. the hot dogs themselves massive which makes them a perfect midnight snack. if the restaurant is busy don't be afraid to take out as the hotdogs taste just as good at home!

massive hot dogs and kitchy 60s decor. heard about tubby dog some years ago but this was my first visit. the busy but friendly staff were happy to answer questions and make recommendations for the uninitiated. my slaw dog was a meal in itself, with a tasty cabbage slaw, chili andcheeseon the large hot dog. the 50s/60s hollywood memorabilia make for a fun atmosphere. maybe next time i visit i will be brave enough to try their infamous pbj dog with captain crunch cereal!

i'll try to keep my comments pg. we got there for 11:30 (when their hours of operation say they we're suppose to be open), but sadly there was a line up waiting out side for almost 20 min after they were suppose to have opened. so, we finally get inside and i notice they don't have much in the way of their menu, so i thought i'd do the dog where you can create/customize yourself. they didn't have a list up of what was available and if you wanted a special item that it be for a small surcharge. so i ask the guy at the counter what's are my options, alls he said was up to 3 condiments and up to 3 other items depending on what i want and other things will cost you. well that's sort of what i asked for, but perhaps friggen write it up on the bloody menu f'tard or even tell me that i can get this, that and the other and these other things will cost you. since we saw pics from their website, we were expecting a standard of what we saw. so, i ordered i think it was the harlo dog and they put the eww factor in grose when they put this liquid version ofcheesewiz on the dog. so i spent over $7 for garbage. my husband wanted to order june's dog of the month and alls the guy said was 'yeah that was last months dog' and didn't suggest how my husband could get some thing similar. so the husband orders this months dog which was sapose to have beans (yeah they put a teaspoon size amount of canned baked beans). then his dog had acheeseslice. the pics from the web site show shredded cheddar on their hot dogs not a piece of 'cheese' that is a few elements away from plastic. then his dog came with 'chips' sadly he got a bowl with what looked like remnants of what's left at the bottom of a chip bag, wtf. well based on the pics on the website i am thinking these are monster dog, yeah it was a rodent (small) dog. i am equally grossed out by the inside of this joint, i am surprised the health inspectors haven't shut this place down. you will know what i mean it you step one foot into this place. btw, don't go into the bathroom, it will eat you alive. this place makes costco's dogs look good and $6 cheaper.

way to be skippy for giving up our hopes up. we are from out of province and this joint is doing calgary a disservice.

i feel tubby.. i was visiting a friend in calgary and she suggested we go for some greasy food. something to really tide us over for a day of walking around in the cold weather. so we went to tubby dog. i like when people take classic things and go extreme with them. its not healthy, but we know that going in..i mean the place is called tubby dog. anyways, the inside was regular diner style, with a few tables and some pac man arcade games! hooray! i ordered the monthly feature which was called the cassidy. it had a huge hot dog, deep fried pepperoni, jalepenos, pinapple, loads of cheese, and ranch dressing on top. i ate most of it, but couldn't finish. my friend one upped me and got the largest item on the menu. it had a hot dog wrapped in bacon, deep fried, loads of bacon, banana peppers, fried onions, cheese, a fried egg, and nachocheeseon top. the bun could barely support everything. it was yummy. i could see how drunk people would flock here. its definitely a must try, but only once in a while.

decent, but understand all the hype. i visited here a couple weeks ago with my friends for a quick lunch. luckily we got in before the lunch rush came, so we got our food pretty quickly from some friendly service, which was great!

i got the "a-bomb", practically a hot-dog topped-off with barbecue and ripple potato chips, bacon bits, and nachocheesesauce. obviously, if you're on a diet, don't come here.

the dog itself was just a hotdog, nothing to write home about. the toppings were the same. but, nonetheless, the hot-dog was tasty mess. i thought of ordering a side of fries, and i'm glad i didn't, the dog was filling enough for me.

however, after visiting tubby dog, i didn't quite understand all the hype of it. not that it was bad, but it wasn't something that i would rave over. the atmosphere of the place is awesome; very laid back, with cool retro décor, but still, don't understand why everyone is so ga-ga over this place.

in conclusion: the food was pretty good, but in my opinion a little steeply-priced (also, $7 for a bottle of coronita, the little corona? kind-of a rip, at least make it a full-sized corona for that price). the service scored two thumbs-up, as well as the atmosphere. if you're in the area looking for something unique to try, go here. but i wouldn't drive across town just to come here, let alone stand in line for 15 minutes.

tubby dog probably should make me sick.... ...but it never has. the classic tubby dog with cheddarcheesesubstituted for spacecheeseis my go-to dog, with a great big fountain coke. i probably should feel ill after i eat it, but that chili always seems to fill me up (a full dinner for around $10 is wonderful). the decor is kitschy and fun, and i always enjoy the 90210 or seinfeld re-runs or kung-fu movies that seem to play on loop, projected onto the far wall. the only miss for me at tubby has been the yam fries. they were soggy, oily and nasty. if you want good yam fries, walk down the street a bit to the coup and get some for take-out (with maple syrup on the side). if, that is, you still have room after you down your tubby or captain's dog.

good food, terrible staff. the toppings are unique, the hot dogs themselves are below par in my opinion. but when my husband wants to go, i will tag along.

however...the staff i've dealt with have been awful. everytime i go there, i'm told "something" isn't available (out of mozzacheeseso they couldn't make one of their weekly specials, etc). last time we were there, my husband asked to have his hot dog bacon-wrapped (on this particular choice it didn't come that way) and he was told they couldn't do that, until another staff member piped up and said of course they could.

the staff are rude, text in front of customers, and could care less about any kind of customer service. that's enough of a turn off for me.
