the wooden whisk

every now and then you find a little gem of a cafe that completely surprises you and blows you away – like the wooden whisk in crows nest/st leonards. [ps: win 2 tickets to taste of melbourne on november 12th-15th! check out my instagram to enter!]. it’s not like the black stars or the bourke street bakeries that you hear about all the time – it’s an understated little cafe on the north shore that kicks butt with its food. it’s on an unassuming street – and of course that means i made assumptions about it. but as soon as i walked into the wooden whisk i knew there was something different about it. first off, the menu was huge, with a whole list of specials on a blackboard as well. the second thing i noticed was how packed the place was – that’s a sure sign of a good place.

great breakfast. as my wife and i travel around the country, we both appreciate when we find a place that is a cut above the rest.
we both had a very nice breakfast commenting to the gentleman behind the till that it was probably one of the best big breakfasts that we have experienced.
bacon was cooked to perfection, spanish bean sause was a taste sensation.
10/10 on the service.
coffee was perfect.

tried this place for the first time, got the warm lamb shoulder salad, it came out very quickly. literally one of the best salads i’ve ever had. the flavours all compliment each other.

i will say the cafe is a bit pricey so couldn’t afford to go there all the time, but it’s a must try!

great cosy cafe in st leonards, came here catching up with friends over brunch. i ordered the beef burger and it came with a beef patty, bacon, leaves, cheese and tomato and a side of chips with tomato sauce and aioli. would recommend for a casual brunch!

my very favorite brunch place! staff is super friendly and positive, coffee is really good, food is awesome! smashed avo, green bowl, pulled pork eggs benedict, porridge, lamb - everything is delicious! the only thing that is not good is acoustics here - very loud inside, so if you have sensitive ears as mine, sit outside. oh, and they are also closed on sunday:(

overall: 3.9/5
got the dr. seuss pasta and breakfast grazing board as well as an iced long black and fresh juice.

pasta 4.1/5 - strong smokey flavours that tied well with each other while offsetted by the fresh rocket.
grazing board 3.6/5 - overcooked and bland eggs which broke the dish, however, everything else was done quite well.
coffee - pretty good but nothing amazing
juice - fresh and tasty

such a great menu! forget about the generic eggs on toast, here's a cafe to add some zing to your brunch with their friend chicken eggs benedict which comes served on a croissant, and their green bowl which comes with lots of green, but also a healthy dose of chorizo and umami flavours. brilliant flavours all around! only thing that stopped me from giving 5 stars rating was that our poached eggs were slightly overdone. bustling little cafe, overall would definitely come back again.

the cafe is just a few steps from ground level. coffee is decent, staff is friendly. the two salads we ordered, fried haloumi salad and lamb shoulder salad are nicely done, burrito and pasta was okay, not a wow factor but still nice.

the staff here are very friendly - we were greeted warmly upon arrival and taken to our table. the food here is pretty average though. both time that i’ve been here for food, their poached egg is terrible - overcooked and is basically a hard boiled egg...their coffee isn’t that great either unfortunately.

wonderful cafe in st leonards/crows nest area. warm attentive staff, great food and coffee. we love the breakfast burrito and the reuben. good kids menu as well. turmeric ginger latte is another highlight. can be busy on saturdays, but it’s worth the wait.
