great irish food done properly. after visiting the last jar the other night, i must say it was a great experience. there aren't too many authentic irish restaurants in melbourne, but the last jar was great. the irish stew was so tasty and tender. the oysters and prawn entrees were very fresh and flavoursome. roast chicken was also mouth watering. service was warm and knowledgable about gaelic food and culture. a very relaxing and enjoyable night had by all. i will be returning.

traditional irish pub with a twist. that's how i described the last jar. it's a pretty authentic fare; all the staff at the dining room were irish and the menu covers many traditional dishes.

good food with good hospitality. enjoyed a really nice lunch and a coiple of craft beers here today. we cannot fault the food or service and the standout was the apple and rhubarb pie with brandy vanilla cream . . . . . worth going in for that alone.

no irish stew. went to the last jar last night with my husband and daughter only to be extremely disappointed. we all had high hopes of having their irish stew, only to be told that they had sold out of it. to me when you are known for a particular dish i would have thought that you would always have plenty on hand. the service we had there was good, the bread everyone talks about was delicious, the meals we ended up choosing were okay. my recommendation would be before you go there make sure they have the irish stew still on the menu if that is what you are craving.

the tender ox tongue was almost melt-in-your-mouth and accompanied by garlic puree, sorrel, spring onions and tasty braised peas. it was a pleasure to look at and a joy to eat. the salt ling potato cake was topped by a crispy, oozy, battered egg and a apple and watercress salad. mum thought the potato cake was a tad dry, but i thought it was fine with the egg yolk and moisture from the light and refreshing salad.

nevertheless it was a rule bend that paid off in spades as the last jar was absolutely fantastic! firstly, the place was pumping, we only just managed to secure a table but the staff (each served with a thick irish accent) were super accommodating.  this place is half bar half restaurant and, as their website aptly states, ‘the last jar is everything you won’t see in a run of the mill irish-pub franchise’ so don’t go there expecting to order a parma. we started the night with some

...while melbourne is full of irish pubs, rarely do you come across a decent one that’s free of dull and boring food and tacky gaelic clichés. the last jar, however, is not just another irish pub. owned and operated by michelin-trained chef tim sweeney, the last jar is housed in what was formerly the arthouse...

what more could you want?. consistently great food (best steak sandwhich in melbourne), wide range of beers on tap and by the bottle, great atmosphere any time of the week and friendly bar staff.

we spent the greater part of our day at the rmh and were looking for a comfort meal at 8.30pm on a saturday night. the last jar was our choice. it is a cute irish pub with lots of personality. the quiet private dining room was obviously booked out so we were happy to have our meal at the bar like many others. the bar was unbearably loud, an investment in some acoustic batts would make the clientele stay around and eat and drink longer. i would love to return to the private dining room as i value my hearing. we ordered the fillet steak and cape grim steak, both were delicious! the generous hand cut potatoes were crispy on the outside and tender in the middle- so moorish. the accompanying side salad was made with carefully chosen lettuce leaves lightly dresses with an elegant vinaigrette. yummo!

next was main course: the roasted skate wing with slippery jacks, pickled periwinkles, crispy kale and brown butter ($30) was a good choice. the strong, earthy flavour of the slippery jack mushrooms perfectly complemented the mild skate flesh. the brown butter gave the dish a richness and the crispy kale some delicate texture. - see more at: http://decisivecravings.com.au/the-last-jar/#sthash.o6zknwqf.dpuf

we left this place this evening planning our next visit. loved, loved the food. the menu is a great mix of classic irish and good pub fare - both done very well.
a well thought out wine list with great value by the glass and a very decent selection of beers both on tap and bottled.
this is not just your average irish pub, this to me is a great pub happened to be run by irish people.
