we arrived at 12:45 and unfortunately didn't receive the three sides we ordered until 1:32pm.
this was partly because they were busy but also because the group of people in front of us frigged around ordering separately in a crowded pub, so before we had even ordered were waiting probably 10 mins.
however, 45 minutes for 3 sides from a pub is not great.

waiting aside and the hour lunch break turning into 1 1/2 hour lunch break, we ordered the crumbed garlic mushrooms $9, the heirloom beetroot salad with cashel blue cheese $9, and the handcutchips$9 with their homemade curry sauce $1 to share.

when these three sides finally came out we were pretty hungry but also very impressed.

the handcutchipswere fat and chunky and looked well cooked and generous. once they cooled down enough, very yummy. and the curry sauce was mmm mm mmm, took me back to ireland for sure.

the crumbed mushrooms came as three medium sized mushrooms with a garlic cheese inside, coated in crunchy panko crumb. again, once cooled down enough to eat, very delicious served with some freshly squeezed lemon also accompanied these delights as well.

the salad was surprisingly warm, i expected it would be cold but enjoyed it's warmth. the beets and beet leaves were nicely cooked. if anything i feel there wasn't enough cashel blue as there was only a couple of tiny strips for the whole salad. the pickled walnuts! what an interesting addition - they were black, sliced and a bit salty resembling a large slice of olive but with a softer texture. forgetting that they were mentioned in the menu we couldn't figure out what they were by taste, sort of like a mixture between olive and mushroom? interesting, but not in a bad way.

the sav blancs ordered were all on the stingy side, pouring in under the plimsoll line. at $8.50 each, at least fill the wineglass to the line!!

overall the food was very nice as far as deep fried sides go and the salad was a warm yummy addition, but the wait and wine could improve.

just like being back in ireland!. i'm so so glad that i finally got around to booking a table at the last jar! it took me back to my travels through ireland last year and i felt right at home. it's a friendly atmosphere and you can either eat in the restaurant or in the bar. if you want a table in the restaurant make sure you book as it was really busy!

we shared the mussels as a starter and they were absolutely delicious - i will be going back to have a whole bowl to myself. served with crusty bread it is a must try. for main i had the 250g scotch fillet served with crunchychipsand a generous and well dressed salad. they also had hellman's mayo on the menu which i discovered in ireland and has been a staple withchipsever since. the complimentary soda bread and butter was a huge hit as well!

it's one of the better pub meals i've had in a long time and i will definitely be back - i just regret not going there sooner!

stodgy fare. we thought this pub would be a lovely spot for a heart warming lunch on a bitterly cold melbourne day. sadly, we left quite underwhelmed, to the point that we drove to another place to have coffee and dessert. the fish andchipswere stodgy and really not nice - probably 25% fish to 75% batter. the batter was crisp on the outside but so thick that it was mushy on the inside, as was the little strips of fish. actually the mushy peas were less mushy than the inside of the batter. the other dish (mullet) was better but nothing special. was also a little disappointed that we were told about the daily special, ordered within minutes, and then were told it was sold out a couple of minutes later. given there were only 9 other people in for lunch at 12.30 and no one had received their mains yet, i reckon there was about 2 pieces of duck on offer in the first place. and then i had to tell the waitress that they forgot charge me for my meal (even though i hardly ate it, i didn't want to be dishonest and it definitely wasn't a case of it being left off the bill because i was dissatisfied). oh well, others seem to like the place, maybe we just copped a bad day in the kitchen.

the menu was small and wasn't really to our liking and because they had been busy, 2 of the few mains weren't available so all four of us stuck to steaks.steaks were really good, well cooked, melt in your mouth stuff!chipswere... not chips. more like the largest thick cut spuds on the planet but well seasoned and a massive hit. salad consisted of onion and lettuce and was drowned in oil, wasn't touched by anyone on the table. a bit pricey but good food and friendly staff so will come back again.

i came here on a thursday night and tried to ordered a steak or calamari meal but they had been sold out. i ordered steak sandwich instead and they came up with a full dish of foods and chips. everything tastes very nice and crispy. i was so happy with the order of the ‘leftover’ choice. the beef steak was well-cooked and the bread was tasty too. i love the spreading which, i guess, contains some cheese and mushrooms. i was yummy and i could finish all of the sandwich no matter how long did it take. thechipsare also nice but i found it no so special compared to the sandwich. i could only take few pieces ofchipsand left the rest. i will come back to this place some day and highly recommend this to new people.

a bit intimidating at night - the red walls, the yellow glow of the lights but after making the brave decision to enter, the service was nice.

ordered:
rump steak (gf): steak served with mash and seasonal veg and mushroom sauce ($26.00)

review:
the steak itself was not bad - incredibly affordable compared to the $50 price tag on them when you head into the cbd. mash was a little boring and mushroom sauce could've been a little more generous. the feeling of rationing out the mushroom sauce so you would have enough for every bite of steak sucks. a little more pizzazz could have gone into the seasonal veg - whether dressing it up or perhaps chargill it instead?
we also grabbed a bowl ofchipswhich were fried incredibly well. crispy and crunchy - what more could you want!

on the friday night, there was a live band playing which echoed into our almost empty dining hall. a shame - the last jar is nice and service is friendly but atmosphere a little scary before you even enter the building. :(

the service was ok but the food....?? four of us ate there and four of us left most of our meals.  it was pretty awful.  we had the fish andchips- dry, unappetising, full of grease and frankly, inedible.  the wine was ok though. and so was the mineral water.  should have stuck with that obviously.  sadly we won't be back despite the great location.

ok. so i've had to downgrade to 3 from what i believe should be a 3.5 venue due to a lack of a consistent quality in their dinner service.

that said, always a lovely place for a quick after work drink and their fish andchips- mushy peas and soda bread is a great combo. not sold on the malted vinegar ;)

delightful!. a friend and i popped in here recently to enjoy some irish pub food and were not disappointed! service was friendly and even though it was very busy (a friday night) our food came quickly and was superb! i had the baked spud which was soft and fluffy as a cloud with gorgeous cheese and a lovely salad. my friend's fish andchipswere incredible too and prices very reasonable. will be back, keep up the amazing work!

cool irish gastro pub. i wasn't even aware of irish food until i ate here, but i like it now!

the kitchen makes their own bread here and it is utterly delicious - chewy and springy.

i had the snapper, oysters and seaweed broth - very unusual but full of flavour. my bf had the steak which came with chunkychipsand salad....the serve was massive.

i would love to return and try more of the irish fare on the menu.

ps don't forget to check out the cute little 'snug' and the beer garden!

really tasty meal. main of steak and thick, hand cutchipswith the peppercorn sauce, so good! the fried chicken entree admittedly very average, but finished off with the mrs.' dessert, usually not a fan of sweets, but guinness flavoured ice cream (a given being good) with cake and choc sauce was a winner.
