just like being back in ireland!. i'm so so glad that i finally got around to booking a table at the last jar! it took me back to my travels through ireland last year and i felt right at home. it's a friendly atmosphere and you can either eat in the restaurant or in the bar. if you want a table in the restaurant make sure you book as it was really busy!

we shared the mussels as a starter and they were absolutely delicious - i will be going back to have a whole bowl to myself. served with crustybreadit is a must try. for main i had the 250g scotch fillet served with crunchy chips and a generous and well dressed salad. they also had hellman's mayo on the menu which i discovered in ireland and has been a staple with chips ever since. the complimentary sodabreadand butter was a huge hit as well!

it's one of the better pub meals i've had in a long time and i will definitely be back - i just regret not going there sooner!

*updated april 2016. i've visited at least twice more since my first review and it just confirms what a sensational place this is. food, service, atmosphere. huge portions - you definitely won't leave hungry. very highly recommended.

lots to like. really great on many levels - the vibe, the service, the food, the number of beers on tap!

our waitress was lovely and efficient.

food was brilliant! i agonised over what to choose and decided on the irish stew which was a truly excellent representation of the classic dish, and my companion had the 1/2 roast duck with pickled peach, and rocket and hazelnut salad. mmm! both meals were excellent. the complimentarybread(two types: soda, and oat) was fantastic.

i'm keen to return as the waitress mentioned when she was explaining some of the dishes that the smallgoods were house-made.

price point was excellent for the quality of the food. highly recommended!

hidden gem. a non discrete pub on the corner in the dead end of the city lies a hidden gem.

finding this place was a benefit of social media and the plethora of food sites.

think irish tapas..
went with an english mate (it made him homesick) and had an array of starters...exceptionally tasty and no pulled pork on brioche or over priced pseudo wage hamburgers ~
tasty food, generous serves and exceptionally reasonably priced...tried an array of starters and nothing disappointed. great home madebreadand tangy sauce sadly unable to purchase any for home.
friendly smiling irish young lady who made us feel very welcome.
open fire.

saw the sandwiches and steaks go past looked huge servings definitely coming back for lunch and dinner to try.

a great discovery that is now on 'list' !

i came here on a thursday night and tried to ordered a steak or calamari meal but they had been sold out. i ordered steak sandwich instead and they came up with a full dish of foods and chips. everything tastes very nice and crispy. i was so happy with the order of the ‘leftover’ choice. the beef steak was well-cooked and thebreadwas tasty too. i love the spreading which, i guess, contains some cheese and mushrooms. i was yummy and i could finish all of the sandwich no matter how long did it take. the chips are also nice but i found it no so special compared to the sandwich. i could only take few pieces of chips and left the rest. i will come back to this place some day and highly recommend this to new people.

nice atmosphere and feels like your back in ireland. service was very good but the food was not anything special. my girlfriend had the mushroom starter, she thought it was good, could have done with a little garlic dip. i got sodabreadbut it came out toasted and didn't taste like soda bread. the steak was ok, cooked to my liking but it definetly was not dry aged, a little tough even having it medium rare, 34 $ for a porterhouse you would imagine it would have been better. the guinness was great, easily the best pint of the black stuff in melbourne.

an irish pub/restaurant that serves up the traditional dishes, with a twist. the place is set up quite comfortably with a lot of space, but it does have that pub smell. theirbreadand butter is worth coming for but as for the other dishes, not so much. complementarybreadand butter. perhaps the best i've ever had. definitely worth trying. 9/10

ok. so i've had to downgrade to 3 from what i believe should be a 3.5 venue due to a lack of a consistent quality in their dinner service.

that said, always a lovely place for a quick after work drink and their fish and chips - mushy peas and sodabreadis a great combo. not sold on the malted vinegar ;)

cool irish gastro pub. i wasn't even aware of irish food until i ate here, but i like it now!

the kitchen makes their ownbreadhere and it is utterly delicious - chewy and springy.

i had the snapper, oysters and seaweed broth - very unusual but full of flavour. my bf had the steak which came with chunky chips and salad....the serve was massive.

i would love to return and try more of the irish fare on the menu.

ps don't forget to check out the cute little 'snug' and the beer garden!

no irish stew. went to the last jar last night with my husband and daughter only to be extremely disappointed. we all had high hopes of having their irish stew, only to be told that they had sold out of it. to me when you are known for a particular dish i would have thought that you would always have plenty on hand. the service we had there was good, thebreadeveryone talks about was delicious, the meals we ended up choosing were okay. my recommendation would be before you go there make sure they have the irish stew still on the menu if that is what you are craving.

the darkbreadwas full of deep savoury flavour but with a lovely mellow sweetness. i couldn't help but wonder if there was some guinness in it. it also had lots of nubbly texture from the various seeds through it. despite it looking dense and heavy, it was actually surprisingly light and moist.

the whitebreadalso had the light and moist texture, and was some of the most flavoursome whitebreadthat i've ever eaten. everything about these two breads made you believe that you were eating this in a homely farm out in ireland. it's no hyperbole that you could taste the essence of homemade food and the earnestness of the simplebreadand butter.

the last jar truly shows how delicious and imaginative irish food is...ingredients can include nettles, sweetbreads and even sea vegetables. the sodabreadwith a touch of oats is scrumptious beyond words. the guiness ice cream is like some form of irish heaven ;-) the quality of the ingredients always shines through and the irish film club once a month showcases just how diverse, interesting and surprising irish films are.

best hearty pub meal ever!. this place is brilliant. we ate in the bar area rather than the dining room and had a cosy spot next to the fire place. there aren't that many tables so it still has a real pub feel. the food was truly outstanding with flavour being king. make sure you are hungry as these are some hearty portions. big basket ofbread(the oatbreadwas devine) for mopping up the delicious broth that made up part of the dublin cobbler (a sausage and potato stew) and the irish stew. the black and white pudding were a great starter for a cold night. and the side of brussel sprouts, bacon and walnuts was delicious. i can't wait to go back for a full irish breakfast just to have some of the bacon again. in a way i don't want any body else to know about this place just so i can keep it to myself.
