oh so close to getting 5 stars.

the food was delicious, fast and thebentobox meal was very plentiful. i had the gyoza entree but thebentois very filling by itself.

the service was friendly and efficient but once i was served my meal that was it, they never came back to check on anything. the next time i talked to a staff member was as i was paying on the way out.

note zomato is not widely used in dunedin with most places having more recent reviews on google.

food 4/5
ambiance 3.5/5
service 4/5

very satisfying meal especially when you need to refuel. large portion ofbentobox.generous serving of rice. seafood nicely lightly battered and complimented well with pickled and fresh side dishes. sizzling tofu was soft, nicely cooked. green tea was fantastic takes me back to japan. miso soup was ok, good for a cold dunedin weather. prompt service. just found it a bit dark where we sat.

super cheap. the menu looked amazing. enjoyed thebentobox. it was a bit crowded for my liking, but then i'm told it gets quite busy most times. so a reservation would be recommended. staff are friendly.

for its price , would definitely go back.

we booked in advance to come here, (thankfully as it was super packed). it's not surprising this place is so popular considering the food is cheap and really good quality.

we ordered the sashimi bento, spicy chicken jitsu plate, 2x chicken teriyakibentoand 1 karage chicken bento

the meals were served with miso which was very nice and this was served very quickly after ordering. the actual mains took a little while longer - but it was super busy on a friday night so we weren't fussed. all the meals were super good! love bentos as you can try a variety of different things. my friends spicy chicken platter wasn't very spicy so she wasn't the biggest fan. the only downside is they didn't give us kamemeshi rice rather than plain (you get the choice) with the bentos and there wasn't an explanation to why that was. but that wasn't too big of a deal anyway

real good service from the staff too. will be back asap :)

great food and service :) i went here with my friend on may 2017. we ordered vegetarian sushi ( 7 large pieces for around $7 so i'm really pleased), steam vegetarian dumplings ( probably around $6 for 8 small pieces) , and 2bentoboxes ( around $12 each) the dumplings are okay and i like thebentoboxes :) really delicious and filling. we pay totally $37 for 2 and feel really pleased and full.

it's nice restaurant in dunedin. i was a bit weary on japanese, but i loved it.

i had the seafoodbentobox and it was delicious. the sushi was nice, and everything was cooked to its right temperature.

price wise it was affordable and fair.

one thing about this place- the food is really reasonably priced for the amount that you get! it's not gourmet dining but it's some decent japanese food!

we ordered a large variety off the menu with the intention to share. the miso they have is a favourite of mine. the takoyaki was really nice, no complaints. grilled salmon don needed some more sauce, and the vegetable kebab was very undercooked- the onion was practically raw. the spicy katsu chicken was yummy- crispy batter and the sauce was flavoursome. really enjoyed the tofu salad- probably one of the favourites, surprisingly! curry was perhaps a bit too sweet and there wasn't a lot of meat in it, mostly potato. thebentobox had all the different elements and was very enjoyable.

good for a casual dinner, but don't expect much in the way of service. our table was on a slight angle and one half was a bit wobbly! it was a nice meal but not going back in a rush.

a great place for a night out and byo! the place has a nice atmosphere, convenient location, friendly staff, they're simply fantastic. not to mention the wide selection of sushi is fantastic, and they do thebentoright! (finally!) even with takeaway, they use the properbentobox like in japan!

sure, the food isn't as accurately cooked and a little too westernised, but there are so many things that the other places like jizo can't offer and i can simply live with that. but please, for the love of god, stop putting tomato sauce on karaage! that's just wrong.

if i had to nitpick on one thing, the menu doesn't have a wide range of dishes compare to the other places.

we had not been to the jitsu for about a year and we remembered it being enjoyable. so we went last week and ordered take away.....we were quite disappointed.

we had two entree and 3 mains. the tataki salad entree we ordered was by far, the worst tataki we ever had. the beef was cooked all the way through and was very dry and seemed to have been boiled.

for the mains we had a porkbentoand two donburi. the mains were very average but filling. also the sashimi in thebentowasn't very fresh.

as for service, we couldn't really say as we had takeaway, but the service from the cashier could be better.

overall, although it was good value for money, i was quite disappointed with the quality of the dishes, (especially the overcooked tataki ) and it didn't taste very authentic.

went to this place last night with family members. i am a little bewildered by the overwhelmingly positive feedback on here.

first of all, i did not think that the food was authentically japanese. it tasted like chinese -style takeaway food. the flavours and textures were not delicate and delicious, as japanese food should be. we ordered 3 different mains - the prawn kebabs, fishbentoand chicken curry rice. the chicken curry rice was absolutely awful - the chicken was so overcooked, chewy and fatty that i almost didn't recognise it as chicken. my prawns were ok, but were covered in some kind of sweet, sticky sauce, which was just overly sweet and not pleasant at all. the side salads were bland and boring and didn't have enough dressing on them. the fish dish was very average. the restaurant does not have much ambience - it has booth style seats, it feels like being in an american diner. i would have given it two stars - but it is reasonably inexpensive and the service was friendly, fast and efficient. overall, i would not recommend this place or be back - particularly to people who appreciate authentic japanese food.

the best food ever!! we go here all the time the food is so tasty and there is a huge variety that suits everyone from fresh sushi to sizzling teppan chicken dishes, if you can't make up your mind you can get abentobox that gives you a taste of everything. not to mention its b.y.o and all priced reasonably. you just can't go wrong ;)
