visited today when the weather was nice in the early afternoon. tried the cabinet cake slices and would strongly recommend the kumara one; it is one of the nicest cakes i've tasted and suits really well with tea.

friendly service but can be a little slow at times.

one of my favorite dessert place in auckland. they always have excellent presentation of tasty and beautiful sweets. i especially love their mont blanc which is really my love because of its crispy pastry, smooth cream and chestnut filling. but i would not recommend mocha cake since it's really average. the price is a little expensive though.

the cream puff is very nice, but the mango slice is a bit sour to me. my mom thought it was really nice and refreshing though.
over all the cake is very nice!

friendly helpful service, bought a drink and a slice of cake. both were really delicious and decently priced. great place to have a nice catch up as there is a courtyard at the back.

got three cakes to try, everything looked so appetising! the staff were helpful and the service was swift.

mini baked cheese cake 2.5/5
texture and taste was not what i expected. i anticipated a fluffy airy mousse like cheesecake but instead was met with a dense sponge that dried out the mouth a bit. it is quite a thick sponge with an egg-y taste and was heavy to eat. it also was a bit bland, there wasn’t much of a prominent flavor and i was disappointed.

classic cheesecake 3.5/5
wow she thicc. this was was a thick solid block of cream when i cut through it. tart in taste, with yogurt-y accents and a super creamy texture, it definitely tingled the tastebuds the most out of the three pieces we tried. it is improved by the caramel-y base which was slightly harder than the cake itself. overall the most unique of the three but nothing wow.

kumura fresh cream 3.5/5
the name jus made me crave and i had high hopes. it wasn’t as sweet as i imagined, in fact is was not that sweet at all but the taste focused around the super fresh airy cream that slathered between each sponge layer. the cream worked well against the denser sponge and together they mixed into a milky concoction, however if there was less cream the elements would not have worked and the cake would’ve been to overpowering. personally it didn’t meet the wow threshold but it was a nice treat, a simple neat fresh cream cake.

overall i don’t think these cakes are worth the hype, i was planing on getting the strawberry tiramisu full cake, but if the classic fresh cake didn’t even wow me, i doubt the tiramisu would be spectacular. the cakes were quite basic, and they’re decent don’t get me wrong, but they just lacked uniqueness.

i have been having decadent visits to gateau house queen st and previously lorne st for a few years. i travel from the suburbs and pay for parking in town to visit here, that's how highly i have rated this branch.
all branches are not equal in terms of service, atmosphere, quality of drink, so we choose this for treats. there are always so many delicious desserts, of which i can't choose a favourite, and don't mind paying the high prices for. the coffee at this branch is usually very good, not needing a sugar.

today's visit has earned my favourite branch a downgrade of rating. the 3 stars is simply for past good times, not for today, for which i would give a 1.
we arrived at 1030, by no means early for a cafe. the staff member was courteous and polite, no problem there. unfortunately the coffee machine had not been cycled for long enough, if at all, and the espresso was most unpleasant. my cappuccino did not have the right froth on top, too similar to a flat white.
the nail in the coffin though was the cutlery. it seems like a small thing to complain about but it made all the difference today. rough bamboo sporks to eat fine dining desserts with? have they lost their minds? please return to some sort of smooth plastic or stainless steel cutlery to serve your wares. i'm sure you can get environmentally friendly plastic if you want to cut back on washing up! i hope you take on this feedback, and i will adjust my rating if the situation improves.
thanks

the gateau house is one of my favourites. their kumara cake and classic cheesecake is the best and not too sweet (5/5). i also recommend their cookies and cream cheese log (5/5).

amazing desserts and always a go to for birthday cakes! a little on the pricey end but you pay for what you get. there’s a cute little garden area at the back too which is good for some coffee and a little mid day dessert!

the gateau house cakes are all around auckland and always a favourite place of mine to order birthday cakes for my family. there is a variety of cakes often on display for last minute purchases and online order available for anything special or not in store.

a personal favourite is the kumara cake, which comes in the round shape, log cake and slices available to dine in or takeaway. it is made from fresh cream and not to sweet for a nice after meal dessert or snack.

i like how the gateau house offers seating for dine in coffees and tea now and the cabinets are always packed with goodies to choose from.

our go to for birthday cakes. always consistent with design, flavour, size etc etc. gateau house is a place we can always rely on to provide delicious cake. only one i would not recommend is the chiffon cakes (pictured). they are like regular sponge cake covered in cream. no fillings etc.

the cakes here are divine. light and fluffy. my all time favourite would have to be the kumura cake but can never go wrong with any of their selection. this new black forest is very light and not heavy like traditional cheesecake shop black forest .

who doesn’t love gateau house. we like all their cakes with exception to opera cake. nearly a must for birthdays and celebrations. their tiramisu is delicious. $56 is the standard price for all their normal sized cake. super rich and indulgence.
